Really liked the swagger the hogs played with last night. Nasty on defense and tough and aggressive on O. Could be a winning formula down the stretch.

He’s just playing phenomenal defense right now. His technique and timing last night was incredible.
I'm sure it was just a case of needing to get one/both of them ready, but I think we're at the point where having both of the twins on the court at the same time is beneficial for us. We need to do that more going forward, IMO.

If we run Mississippi St. out of the gym they'll have to rank us.

State only averages 60 pts a game in SEC play. 350th in the country.

If we can get hot at home like we did last night its blowout.

I think we could sneak in to #24 or 25 with a win over State. A lot of teams ahead of us in the voting lost yesterday; Duke, Auburn, Maryland, Rutgers, New Mexico all lost.

Did anyone ever figure out what happened before the end of the first half?

When foul was called againt KY under the basket, Cal got T'd up.

Black shot 2 free throws, then kentucky got the ball. Do technicals not give you 2 shots and the ball anymore?

Injuries to Trevon Brazile and Nick Smith Jr. have completely changed the equation for Arkansas, but five-star guard Anthony Black has kept the Hogs afloat. Even against really tough defenses, Black continues to showcase how easily he can get into the lane and collapse the defense. Black is stuffing the stat sheet with 12.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists, and he’s shooting 57.5% on 2s. Opponents are shooting a measly 31.1% from the field when Black is the closest defender, according to Synergy. That’s one of the best marks of any freshman in the country.

When Smith has been on the floor, he’s been super productive. But a lingering knee injury is certainly very concerning. Fellow McDonald’s All-American freshman Jordan Walsh has become an integral part of the Arkansas rotation. Walsh’s struggles from 3-point range have been well-documented, but he plays with incredible energy and toughness. Walsh is averaging 7.7 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Joseph Pinion was an oft-forgotten piece of Arkansas’ prized recruiting class, but with the Hogs struggling to shoot the rock, Pinion has earned a much bigger role. Opposing teams continue to test him on the defensive end, but Pinion quickly proved he belongs on the floor. His role should only continue to grow as the season continues. Pinion moves without the basketball really well, and he opens up Arkansas’ driving lanes. His counting stats don’t jump off the stat sheet right now, but Pinion is transforming into a super valuable piece to the puzzle.

Real contenders

quote:

Brandon Miller, Alabama: Miller has been phenomenal this season. The 6-foot-9 wing is just wired to score, and no one can stop him. When Alabama needs him to go off, he’s capable of flirting with 30+ points every single night. Miller is a legitimate National Player of the Year contender, and his numbers (19.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 45% from 3) are insanely good.

Anthony Black, Arkansas: Black would be a Freshman of the Year frontrunner in a lot of conferences. But he’s got some work to do to catch up to Miller. That doesn’t take anything away from his brilliance in a harder-than-expected role. Arkansas has had to lean heavily on Black, and he’s responded in a big way. Black is averaging 12.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Black can get into the lane whenever he wants, and he’s been an impactful defender for Eric Musselman and Co.

Cason Wallace, Kentucky: No freshman is a better perimeter defender than Wallace. Kentucky’s 6-foot-4 guard is absolutely nasty on the ball, and he’s shooting it from 3-point range really well, too at 39.5%. Kentucky has had a rollercoaster season, but Wallace has been a breath of fresh air thanks to his toughness and all-out effort on both ends of the floor.

GG Jackson, South Carolina: Jackson ranks second among SEC freshmen at 15.9 points per game. Jackson is also ripping down 6.7 boards per game. South Carolina needs him to take a bunch of tough shots, and he’s certainly obliged which can be a double-edged sword. Jackson has proven he can be a big-time scorer and NBA executives will undoubtedly be salivating at the chance to draft a prospect like him. But the inefficient shooting nights can be killers against good teams.

Julian Phillips, Tennessee: The Vols have a ton of other guys who can score, but Phillips is not afraid to do the dirty work. He’s an elite offensive rebounder who has proven he can do really good things when the ball is in his hands. Phillips has come on strong as of late and is one of Tennessee’s best five players already. Phillips is averaging 10.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, but those numbers could spike.

Noah Clowney, Alabama: Clowney has to share the spotlight and the shots with a rotation that can go 10 deep, but when he’s out on the floor, the Alabama freshman is one of the most impactful two-way players in the country. Clowney’s rim protection and rebounding has been huge, and he’s showcased soft touch around the basket. Clowney is a stud.

quote:

Must include them on the 'In the hunt' graphic for now:
Jordan Walsh, Arkansas: Walsh has struggled to knock down his 3s, but the 6-foot-7 wing is a nasty defender who can put a lot of pressure on opponents. He still has to grow in a lot of areas, but you can’t question how hard he will play every night.

Riley Kugel, Florida: Kugel continues to earn more run for a Florida squad that desperately needs more shooting. Kugel is shooting nearly 40% from downtown.

Jaden Bradley, Alabama: Bradley is learning how to find his way in a crowded backcourt. Sometimes, there aren’t a ton of shots for him to go get. But Bradley is defending well and getting into the lane constantly.

Arkansas coach Eric Musselman is coaching with his hands tied behind his back without Smith and prized Missouri transfer Trevon Brazile. Smith, Arkansas' first-ever No. 1 recruit, is trying to return from a painful, lingering knee injury. All Brazile can do is change the color of his hair — it's pink right now for cancer research — after a season-ending knee injury robbed him of what looked like a breakout sophomore season.

The class: Anthony Black, Barry Dunning, Derrian Ford, Joseph Pinion, Nick Smith and Jordan Walsh.

How they’ve fared: Eric Musselman and Arkansas completely rebuilt their roster by adding five transfers to go along with their six-man high school recruiting class. Included among those six was 2022’s No. 1 ranked player Smith and two more five-stars in Black and Walsh.

Unfortunately, we may never see if Smith could live up to that top in class billing at the college level. Injury has limited him to just five appearances and it is unclear whether or not he’ll make a return to the floor this season. While Smith has been injured, Black has been every bit as good as advertised. A tall and rangy playmaker, he’s proven that he can carry the team for stretches as either a scorer or setup guy and he’s got some serious potential on the defensive end. Although Walsh hasn’t put up crazy numbers, he’s been pretty solid overall while starting in 18 of his 21 appearances. If he’ll stick around for year two to master how to best use his inside/out ability as a mismatch forward, then he could really take off as a sophomore.

It's not much of a surprise that Dunning, Ford and Pinion have had a hard time finding minutes for a team that brought in several experienced transfers. But Pinion’s long-term potential as a floor spacer has been intriguing.

Preseason transfer team ranking: 6

The scoop: It's hard to properly rank this transfer portal class without its second-best player. Missouri transfer Trevon Brazile quickly showed early in the season he was about to be a problem for the rest of the SEC before suffering a season-ending knee injury. But Ricky Council IV (17.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals) should be in the conversation for All-SEC honors. The Wichita State transfer isn't surrounded by a ton of shooting, but Council can get downhill in a flash. Makhi Mitchell (7.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.4 blocks) has earned more minutes as the season has progressed, and Arizona State transfer Jalen Graham has had some big scoring bursts lately. Graham looks like Arkansas’ best back-to-the-basket scorer.

RICKY COUNCIL IV, ARKANSAS

quote:

When Arkansas coach Eric Musselman was envisioning this squad in the summer, I’m not sure he expected this version of Council. Arkansas has needed every single ounce of Council’s buckets. The Wichita State transfer is averaging a career-high 17.0 points to go along with 3.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Council is shooting 80% from the free throw line and gets to the charity stripe five times a night. Oh, and he plays defense, too. The jump from the AAC to the SEC hasn’t been a big deal for Council. In fact, he stands out as one of the 99th-percentile athletes in the most souped-up conferences in the country.

Stats: 17.0 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.4 APG

Arkansas has been bit by the injury bug in a bad way this season, but thankfully they got a good pickup in the portal in Ricky Council IV.

You can't replace Nick Smith, Jr. (remains out with a knee injury) and Trevon Brazile (out for the season), but Council has been a bright spot as they continue to fight for March positions.

Council leads the team in scoring and has played his way onto NBA Draft Boards with his scoring acumen and his high-flying athleticism. If it weren't for Council, Arkansas would be in serious trouble.

7. Anthony Black, Arkansas

quote:

Season averages: 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists

Analysis: Black has seen a steadily increasing role for the Razorbacks due to injuries and has provided a steady contribution on both ends of the floor. With the ball in his hands, he’s a threat to drive, pass or shoot, and while his outside shooting numbers were down in January, he was very effective as a driver. His assist numbers also jumped up to 4.6 per game. Defensively, he can affect the game in so many ways with his length and IQ.

Cal got T'd up because we traveled and it didn't get called. He had been warned before and got a sideline warning called on him.

I think because the technical was a deadball foul we did not retain possession as we had just scored the ball.

I love that Isaiah Joe and Jaylin spoiled Lebron’s big night. Sixers fans are royally pissed that they traded Joe. Also saw a projection of the Thunder drafting NSJ, that would be so cool.
