The defense is fine, but Cover likes to write a lot of paragraphs and some of it is the same one from another post.
Cover, you are not going to change some of these guys mind, they stubborn. Sometimes stubborn is a good trait though, too stubborn to lose.

Who wasn’t thinking “holy shite thank goodness for this defense
I was thinking “ why are we playing such soft coverage when their QB hasn't proven he can go over the top with any success?”
I also wondered why we keep taking bad angles to the runner over and over again.

When it was 9-0? Man I was pumped
I do agree about playing soft early, though. If we’re going to start slow and behind on the scoreboard, how about let’s do it being aggressive early for a change? Give the guys a chance. If they start getting beat deep, adjust.

I don’t hate Kane’s scheme at all. I’d argue he’s a great DC.
There might be a bit too much “bend” in the “bend but don’t break,” but I tend to blame that a bit more on some of the players than the actual scheme itself.
I’ve witnessed Sabb, for example, giving too much Lawson-like effort. That’s just not acceptable.

It’s pretty damn good, man.
Fully healthy it’s most likely very good.
Why would someone have to be a Womack apologist to believe it’s pretty good?
Our secondary is not good. Our secondary would have to improve to just be bad statistically.
Our secondary is statistically the worst cover group we've had in modern Bama history.
We are currently 102nd nationally in opponent adjusted defensive YPA which is third worst among all B1G/SEC teams. We've never been anywhere close to that at this point in the season going back to when advanced analytics were being kept.
I refuse to make excuses for a secondary with two veterans at safety, a borderline day 1 CB and a ton of pieces to play with coming up as depth and at nickel sitting at 102 in coverage.
And we're 19th in opponent adjusted scoring so lets not pretend like thats a world beating statistic either.
On the flip side prior to losing Green we were top 5 nationally in opponent adjusted defensive YPC so we're elite against the run.
The LB group is plenty good enough, but if we're going to win stuff that matters the secondary has to be rebuilt or Lane is going to exploit the matchups were giving people with #5, #3 and frankly #18 who for whatever reason cannot cover in space this year.

A Jonathon Allen type on the DL is the type of player Wommack hasn’t had.
1-2 guys who are total difference-makers could make them go from solid to very good, and not just holding opponents to 20 ppg and forcing 3 takeaways every week, but would improve them to keeping opponents to 14-17ppg.
That’s what makes the impact players we do have (Z Brown, T Green, J Hill, Zulu) being injured extremely detrimental.
NO WAY they do to UK’s offense what they did with those guys all out with injuries.
What game was the offense responsible for winning that got Bama to Atlanta and the Playoffs last year?

shouldn’t have started a thread calling you out. That was a dick move on my part. I did while pissed during the game. I apologize for that.
I understand. Trust me, I feel like walking out the stadium and feel the same frustration that you do, and I’m sure all of us do bc we want Bama to win. Period
I just try to be reasonable with the defense and I think it stems from my complete disdain for Grubb’s offense.
He has ZERO desire to play complimentary football. He’s only out for himself and to put up stats.
The defense hasn’t had the star power that CNS had, and they also do not have a consistent offense that can put together some 5 minute+ drives and flip the field.
I think Wommack gets a LOT out of the guys he has. Bama should never be playing guys like K Henry/E Hill/ Faga etc…those guys would’ve never gotten a sniff at an offer from CNS.
The Secondary was the 3rd best in the nation a year ago
It also sucks with the timing of Z Brown going down bc Chuck McDonald is a flat out stud.
Bama had the #3 pas defense in the nation and #1 in the SEC last year, allowing just 160.1ypg.
They were 7th the year before that, so clearly Wommack/Linquist have coached solid Secondaries
Playing UT without T Green, J Hill, Zulu and Z Brown was devastating.
Only Z Brown and Y Pierre have 1st round talent on the defense right now.
Yet, the defense continues to get put on the field a ridiculous number of times and they manage to give Bama a chance to win every week.
That is very under-appreciated and over-looked by many fans imo

Both were recruited by and signed with Saban

It's as though folks want our defense to keep this Walmart parking lot shite diaper of an offense from losing games, and when it can't, everyone blames the strongest part of the team.
My theory is 2-fold:
1. Nostalgia for Saban’s defenses from 2011-2017
2. Frustration with Grubb and the sandlot style offense with KR running around for his life, and by proxy, CKD.
So admiring the defense’s resilience and grit doesn’t fit the “CKD is soft and needs to go” or “this team is so soft and Pac12 weak”
Note:
- Like you said, Bama loses 20-17 to the #1 team in the country and people are griping about the defense (who also setup 1 of those scores, and the QB Reese INT could’ve been the defining play OG a huge win).
That’s absolutely nuts imo
“Bend but don’t break” doesn’t force the 2nd most turnovers in all of CFB

I am aware.
His recruiting was NOT the same in his final 2-3 classes.
Faga and Beaman were the only 2 DL taken in his final two classes.
That NEVER would’ve happened from 2008-2022
The roster is currently the better at every single position group compared to 2024.
The best news is the the 1st and 2nd year players on the current the roster who could have played for CNS:
S: Jireh Edwards
S: Ivan Taylor (should be starting over Sabb imo)
N: Zy Gibson
CB: Jordan Edmonds
CB: Chuck McDonald
LB: X Griffin
LB: Luke Metz
Edge: Justin Hill
DT: Nolan Wilson
DT: London Simmons
DE: Jamarion Matthews
There are another dozen or so that I’m excited to see develop out of those 1st and 2nd year players (Duke Johnson, Abdullah Sanders, etc)

So glad we have a bye this weekend. Those guys need it.

Yes, Bye week was desperately needed.
I hope at some point we get to see Zulu, J Hill, T Green, and Z Brown all back healthy for the first time since the UK game.
Everyone was talking about good the defense was after the UK game, but they got hit hard since then.
They need T Green, Z Brown and Zulu back the most out of any of the injured players, along with RCW on offense.
Probably the difference in the outcome vs LSU

Pretty confident we'll have Hill back closer to full strength and Green and ZB will play. I don't have the same confidence about Dez Zulu, it's never good when you hear absolutely zero updates about a turf toe injury that is ongoing for several weeks.

This doesn't matter at all. If BAMA scores 27 vs tenner and uga and they're undefeated. That isn’t a lot to ask from an offense.
If the defense had been better vs tenner what would it have mattered?? The offense wasn't gonna do anything.

So having the worst secondary in modern Bama history doesn’t matter?
We’re among the worst in all of P4, how do you plan to deal with LSU or Miami with a secondary that can’t stop McIntyre at Tennessee who couldn’t throw against anyone else they’ve played?

You’re talking about two separate issues both of which need to be addressed.
One side of the ball being an issue doesn’t make the other side being a problem a non-issue, it just means we aren’t playing very good football and need to fix both if we’re going to win anything that matters.

Good games (Kentucky was a great 2nd half) still giving up close to 20 points. I don't expect elite games every game. Nobody does that anymore. But you can definitely have 1 or 2 of them in this era

Wommack's defense has given up 40 points once since he arrived? When BAMA scores 27 in SEC play the win at an enormous clip.

No. It doesn't. But the defense, even though they are ranked so low, have kept BAMA in every game but the FSU game. So no, rankings don't mean jack diddly shite. 27 points and BAMA wins both games they lost. Even with their shitty, low-ranked defense.

Sometimes when your scheme isnt aggressive that becomes your mindset. You challenge your players, thats the only way they get better.

7 of those points came off a pick-6.
3 more off a turnover on Bama’s -38 and led to a FG.
That’s 1/2 of UK’s points, AGAIN, bc of the wreckless turnovers (especially early in the game) by the offense.
Defense also had a Pick-6 of their own, but those don’t count apparently
