Where do you think this defense will rank among Saban’s best?

Early on we have given up a lot of yardage, but they aren’t breaking. Also, our offense is scoring so much that the other team has the ball more so that could be why. They have honestly done better than I thought they would up to this point, and once we start blitzing more I think our sack numbers will jump off the charts. I’m gonna say this will be at least Saban’s third best defense at Bama.

2009, 2011, 2015, 2016 are his best I think. But, let's face it. Picking a best Saban D is like picking the Playmate of the Year.

No offense, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of replies and have a healthy thread, but I don't understand some people's obsession with constantly trying to 1) predict everything, and 2) rank everything. You have somehow combined both into one thread. Congrats, but I don't see the purpose or the enjoyment.

The enjoyment is living in the now and watching this defensive year unfold. Predictions create expectations, and expectations create disappointment. Appreciate things for what they are - not what they could be or what they aren't.

You need an entire body of work (a whole season) before this topic even warrants discussion. You can’t do a side-by-side comparison without it.

It isn't the run stopping force that we have come to expect. Our nose tackle isn't as stout against the run but he is a bell of a pass rusher on passing downs from the middle. Linebacker play hasn't been as elite either. Regardless, scoring defense is the much more important stat and we are looking good there so far.

I lurk this board a good bit...I must say that you are probably the most annoying human being I've ever come across. Shut the frick up already. You act as if the shite you say is so profound when in reality you're completely off base. People like to make comparisons in sports. This is forum based around sports. I think it's ok to compare the defenses. You think you know your shite but based on the garbage I've seen you spew I say you're clueless.

Probably not one of the best. Lots of inexperience in the back end and not a lot of good depth in the front seven. Not as good as any of the past three defenses, definitely behind the GOAT defense of 2011, and probably behind those 2008 and 2009 teams as well, although style of play throughout CFB has changed a lot in the past 10 years and it has made playing defense much more difficult.

He's actually a beast against the run. And unfortunately for us (but good for him), if he keeps it up he's going to be gone after the year.

After grading at an impressive 82.7 on only 151 snaps last season, Williams was a prime breakout candidate given his strong performance in a small sample. He’s been that and much more through three games, leading the nation with a 96.0 grade against the run and his 86.2 pass-rush grade ranks fifth among interior defensive linemen. Williams has the No. 3 run-stop percentage among interior players at 24.4, and he has three QB hits and five hurries on 64 rushes.

Quinnen Williams - #1 defensive player in the nation thus far

Too young to really rank among the best of Saban's at Alabama IMO. They may be up there by the end of the year, but looking at it as a whole, probably mid-range.

Wow. I stand corrected. I assumed it was his fault we have given up more rushing yardage but I was clearly off base. He was the player I most worried about going into the season too.

You are entitled to your opinion, friend, just as I am entitled to mine. I replied to the OP and was respectful and conducted myself with class. You are obviously a person without class who must lash out at people with insults to attempt to make a point, rather than letting your ideas stand on their own merit. You do you.

I will continue to know that disagreeing with the likes of you means that I am doing life right.

This x infinity.

It's impossible to predict who develops throughout the year and who doesn't, the quality of teams and offenses that we'll face, and most importantly, which injuries we'll suffer on defense. Additionally, the game has changed radically throughout Saban's tenure, and comparing year A to year B is not comparing apples to oranges. It's conjecture on top of conjecture and a complete waste of time for anyone who values objectivity.

Having said that, I think this defense is very good and should be sufficiently good enough to win a championship. I also wish we were healthy enough to see what this pass rush could have been. Oh well. Life happens. I do expect this defense, sans injuries, to improve dramatically as the season progresses.

EDIT: Also, Alabama 2018 has yet to play a team worth a continental damn.

It's been surprising. I agree that I've tended to look to that spot as the basis for our run defense but I just don't know if we're getting very good LB play so far this year. I think that is the biggest factor right now.

We knew it would be an issue going into the year.

I tried telling you during the off season. PFF loved big Quinnen last season. He just needed reps and too fill out a little more. He's 6'3 305 with a fantastic first step. Reminds me of Timmy Jernigan at FSU a few years ago.

Yes, I thought depth would be an issue but expected our first guys to play better than they have. I really feel like Jennings and Mack are at less than 100% and Moses just hasn’t flashed so far this year like he did at times last year.
