Saban knew Ty was better but the Locker room wanted Milroe
If this was truly what forced the hand, Saban made the right call in retiring. I admire him greatly for all of his dedication, ability, and the success that came along with his rigid standard. But if the standard was superseded by roster allegiances, he wasn’t in control anymore.

Joe Burrow exists.

Yeah but 2018 Burrow was playable. Not good, but playable. For Ty to be so bad last year that he wouldn't have given us a better chance than Milroe against UTk and OU he'd have been totally incapable of operating the offense, because that's what Milroe was in those two games.

I think it was the same situation as Coker vs. Sims

Sims started in 2014 because he looked a little better in practice and because the team loved him.

Some guys need to be named the guy, and get live game action to come into their own.

Coaches need to realize when a QB competition is close, always go with the smarter player.

I am talking about the next player that is a cancer on the team needs to be run off immediately regardless of who it is. There will be more with the age of the entitled player. It’s what ran Saban out of the business.

This has been my position since the start. It just irritates me when fans talk down on Milroe when even though he wasn't perfect he still had a winning record as a starter and always carried himself and boasted about the university in a positive way.

Sims started because he was the best option to win games that season. He broke the Bama single season passing record that season. The only reason he didn't win a natty is because Kiffin inexplicably stopped running Henry in the playoff.

Kiffin learned his lesson and ran the shite out of Henry the next season all the way to a natty. But we all know why you of all people prefer Coker to Sims.

I think Saban knew his time was coming to an end and was just trying to save that season. Had he been 5-10 years younger he would have cleaned house and gotten rid of the whole LANK crew IMO

Not everyone is ready right when they step on campus. Look at the progression Mac Jones made through the years he was in Tuscaloosa as an example. Milroe won the job a couple of years ago because of his rushing upside and no one else stepped up to take the job. Last year Milroe was a captain and it was DeBoer’s first year, he should have been benched at certain points and disagree with not seeing Ty but also understand what DeBoer was going through. Simpson got another year to sit and develop and we’re seeing those benefits today. No need to keep digging up the past.

I'm sure KD felt like he was in a tough spot coming into that situation and lockeroom. It wasn't all Xs and Os and probably a decent amount of politics within the team.

My completely-uninformed-with-absolutely-no-inside-information opinion is that Milroe was a leader in getting the locker room to buy into what DeBoer was selling last year, and in DeBoer's first year following Saban he valued that support from a team leader more highly than wins and losses.

I also think Grubb is an excellent QB coach who has helped Simpson improve by leaps and bounds. Simpson looked serviceable when he played last year, but nothing like he does now.

I agree, Grubb has helped Ty's improvement as a starting QB, but also, it would have been admirable for Milroe to bypass the bowl game, giving Ty an opportunity in a lost season. Instead Milroe plays, another terrible performance, turnovers galore, dropping him more in the draft. Other than UGA and beating AU again, that depressing year is in the past.
On to this year and what a difference having a competent QB makes.
We are winning time of possessions, protecting the football, seems like this team is more hungry for wins.
Vandy got 2 costly Milroe turnovers to beat us last year.
This year we pressured Pavia into those costly turnovers.
Ty goes in, plays his game, we outscore Mizzou and he follows it up playing great vs Tennessee, he may be the front runner for the Heisman, based on beating one ranked team after another.

I got roasted two yars ago tootin Simpson's horn. All I got was Milroe's a running threat. How'd that work out for us?

In fairness I doubt Ty Simpson the redshirt freshman even remotely resembled the guy out there now, and Milroe did help us win an SEC championship and reach the playoffs. Definitely flawed, but had some really good moments, too.

Now, last year, Ty should have gotten a look in multiple games. I think DeBoer probably would redo that now if he could.

He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. He was trying to finish the right way. Didn't work out, but I am not going to blame him for wanting to compete. I do blame the coaches for not giving Ty a look in that game, though.

I don’t think we win much more even with Ty last year,

Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Michigan would have been wins with any Alabama quarterback of the last 20 years except for Milroe. He lost those three games basically single handedly.

There's tons of evidence that Milroe was absolutely toxic in the locker room. Saban himself implied as much when citing his reasons for retirement.
