I don't know. I heard Ezell was damn good at rolling back and to the right, out of the pocket, and throwing the ball to the sideline. That's some awesome shite there.

Lol. Tua won the team a long time ago. They had to say the right things so that Hurts didn't get his feelings hurt. One is a legit quarterback the other is an athlete that can make plays with his legs and fold against good defenses. The competition is for second string and Mac is making a case.

I wonder how he feels when he proves over and over how much better he is, and you still have the head coach basically saying it doesn't matter and won't affect the god almighty "competition".

You mean how Saban has handled every qb "competition" in his tenure at bama?

Saban knows who the qb is going to be, the team does, most of the fans do - I just don't understand the hand wringing about this, I really don't.

Both QBs played well in Alabama's second preseason scrimmage (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama’s defense made a lot of plays in the first scrimmage last week.

This week, however, went to the offense.

Following the roughly 130-play, two-hour scrimmage inside Bryant-Denny Stadium, head coach Nick Saban said his Crimson Tide team showed improvement between Scrimmages 1 and 2.

“We made a lot more explosive plays today, were a lot more consistent on offense, took care of the ball pretty well,” Saban said Saturday afternoon. “Both quarterbacks played well. … We had a couple two-minute situations at the end of the game that we were successful at.”

No official statistics were released following the game-like practice, but by all accounts, Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa both performed well in the muggy conditions in the Druid City.

The junior and sophomore have battled for the starting job behind center throughout the preseason, and following a strong performance in last week’s first scrimmage, Tagovailoa appeared to have the upper hand in the competition. The southpaw was the first quarterback out with the first-team offense and after some forced throws, settled down to finish strong, per a source.

But Tagovailoa and Hurts alternated possessions with the ones, and Hurts had a much better day than the first outing in the home stadium this fall camp, rounding out was a solid day for both signal callers with two weeks until the opener, according to those in attendance.

So, the quarterback battle will continue throughout the remaining days of camp and into UA’s first game week of the season, when it begins preparing for Louisville. And asked where he has seen improvement specifically from Tagovailoa, Saban praised both quarterbacks.

“Look, everybody has improved,” Saban said.

“Jalen has made a lot of improvement. Tua has made a lot of improvement. I think he has a better understanding of the offense, he’s got a lot more reps. I think he’s always been a very instinctive player. But I think he would tell you that his knowledge and experience has certainly benefited him in having greater confidence and understanding for what he’s doing.”

And prior to Saturday’s second scrimmage, Saban still did not rule out using both players.

“We have two guys who are great competitors, who are both really good players,” Saban said. “They both have had good fall camps, so I don’t expect (the decision) to be easy. I want them to continue to compete and work hard and do well. Our coaches are working hard to help each one of those guys to be the best player that they can be, and we're going to continue to do that.

“Like I said before, if both guys can contribute to our team, we’ll certainly utilize that the best way we can.”

Alabama will have Sunday off and return to the practice field Monday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m.

Good article TS. Looks like Tua is ahead and Jalen is pushing him. If Tua develops leadership and ball security he is going to win this job in the next 2 weeks.

2 interceptions last season and 0 turnovers in the spring and fall scrimmages would indicate he's pretty good in the ball secruity department.

i'm in the camp that thinks the vast majority of this "competition" is for the benefit of the louisville dc. he has to prepare for both tua and jalen. truth is, i dont think anyone on here doesnt think both will play against louisville.

my biggest concern going into the louisville game is not the qb's. it's our db's and injuries.

John are these the official stats? I haven't seen them. If so this is solid improvement. If he can get his leadership up and win the team in a secondary fashion to Jalen he probably will play a ton this season and might even start the Auburn game and get us that Natty . I hope Tua wins this, you think he would have won by now.

JH, how has Mac looked? I think his ability to win the team and secure the ball might push him into the competition. I think when he scrambles and prior to release he is super secure.

Talking about scrimmages, at least what's been widely reported. Not talking about all the practices, of which I have no idea.

I don't know why fans stress over this

Because if we predetermine playing time ala McCarron/Simms and play a half each, and Jalen gets the start, Petrino could light up our green secondary over and over while our offense goes 3 and out, and we could be stuck in another double digit hole.

And our schedule isn’t quality enough to overcome a loss to Louisville.

Ok just worried about the accuracy , no pun intended. We've gotten some reports that may not have been true. You know "Tua turnover machine" and all.

You can't honestly think Saban would sit there and allow the scenario you just painted to play out can you?

Before this year's rule changes, I think you might have seen them split time under center against Louisville. But with the new redshirt rules, are you really going to let Jalen play a couple of series just to say he started the game then turn the reigns over to Tua and burn one of his 4 games he can appear in before wasting a year of eligibility?

I know Saban is doing what's best for Alabama and not terribly concerned about Jalen the individual but I think it would be disrespectful to burn a year of his eligibility unless they (Jalen and his family) agreed to it. He's done all that's been asked of him in Tuscaloosa and we have another trophy and played for a second thanks in part to Hurts.

It was widely reported that Coach Saban and Coach Hurts spoke sometime yesterday. I wouldn't be at all surprised if part of the conversation was about the plans for Jalen and playing time, eligibility, etc. If Jalen is trying to preserve a year and CNS isn't playing along and allowing Jalen to play in games, don't be surprised if he develops an "injury" before appearing in his fifth game.

Didn’t Saban let Cooper Bateman start against Ole Miss and dig us into a 3 possession deficit?

From Saban's post-game presser:

"I thought Jake did a really good job when he did come in the game," Saban said. "He competed, played well and made a lot of plays. I'm sure he made a few he wishes he had back. I thought Cooper did a good job as well. I really don't think that the change had anything to do with Cooper even though he did throw an interception early in the game, but they had 17 points off of turnovers that had nothing to do with the quarterback. That was the hole that we got ourselves into. That was the reason that we did it."

Box score:

Cokee 21/45, 201yds, 3 TDs 2 INTs
Bateman 11/14, 87yds, 0 TDs 1 INT

Our QBs threw 3 picks, and Coker had 2 of them. Bateman moved the offense, but stalled in the red zone. Bateman was pulled because he got absolutely rocked on a play and got his bell rung. If he had kept a couple of the first Q zone reads, he might not have lost the job. Saban started Bateman because he ran a 4.59 forty and we planned to get him in space in the run game, but he gave it to the RB every time till he was knocked out of the game. Coker came in and 'won the team' and the rest is history.

Bateman didn't play bad at all, and the pick he did throw was Ardarius Stewarts' fault. Very obvious on film.

But you gotta win the team.
