Before the playoffs when Jalen missed a couple practices, Tua filled in and completed 54/58 passes according to Coach Saban. I saw this briefly mentioned in another thread. Here’s the video where Coach Saban talks about it LINK

Well, I guess this is why there was chatter here before the playoffs that there was a package for Tua.

That’s definitely part of it. I remember hearing Saban publicly talk about that decision before and he said it was a decision he made based off the offenses inability to pass/ move the ball the last few games.

I sure wish that Kenny Stabler would have gotten a chance to see him play

My immediate thought was: Tua went 54/58 and Bama still started Jalen? I'd be shocked if Jalen threw for 54% over that span.

While rash, I think that definitely puts into perspective where this QB battle is today. If I'm shocked Tua wasn't starting the Playoffs, how shocked will I be if he doesn't start versus Louisville, and I still can't convince myself that scenario doesn't play out.

93% is off the charts. And as Saban said, that was against a pretty good defense.

I don't understand it. I really don't. This is major college football so it seems kind of silly even saying it but some folks are sympathetic to Jalen's feelings, but what about Tua. I wonder how he feels when he proves over and over how much better he is, and you still have the head coach basically saying it doesn't matter and won't affect the god almighty "competition". I hope he doesn't end up transferring out of here.

While I have lamented Hurts' play for two years, and wanted Tua in there as soon as possible, I don't think Saban really played it wrong. Maybe he could have played Tua toward the end of last season. But, from all accounts, the plan to do so was in the works. I guess the Auburn game is a little baffling. I can understand in games where we were winning, you don't want to throw the true freshman in. Maybe the game was close enough Saban didn't want to pull the trigger. I don't know. But, other than that game, the way Saban played it makes sense to me. I think I would have pulled the trigger sooner, but I can understand his rationale.

But now is what I really don't get. There were the regular season games last year where Tua looked very good. Some times the offense would be struggling to move the ball, though comfortably enough ahead that he came into the game, and immediately the offense improved. Same offensive players, same defensive players, and we got better just because he's in the game.

He played and practiced well enough that the offensive coordinator wanted to play him at least by the Auburn game, but Saban nixed that.

Travis Reier and other accounts say Tua was "lighting up" our vaunted defense most of last year in practice.

Now you have this reports that Tua was nearly perfect in practices leading up to the playoffs when Jalen was out, but still Jalen started. Not until the offense played horribly in the UGA game, and behind 13-0 at the half did Tua finally get a chance. Won the game, but afterwards we were informed that in spite of the fact that Tua keeps proving he's better, there will still be a qb competition.

Spring practice, Hurts continues to struggle. In the spring game, Mac Jones plays better. Saban informs us it didn't matter.

Fall scrimmage, Tua throws 3 tds, runs for another, and Hurts is 0 tds and 3 interceptions. Still dosen't matter and won't decide this "competition".

I mean, what in the hell does Tagovailoa have to do? How bad and how long can Hurts continue to suck but still not only hang in this thing, but continue to be first in the drills and scrimmages, and just watch, he'll start the Louisville game.

This is the weirdest situation of the Saban era. Just strange.

At this point, I wouldn't take Saban's comments about the competition still being open too seriously. I'm sure he knows just like we do that Tua is far and away the best option, but he wants them both to keep competing so they both can get better. But, if the season started tomorrow, Tua would trot out there.

I mean, at some point we have to assume this competition is an effort to have Louisville prepare for 2 qbs.

my personal opinion is, right now with the "competition", bobby petrino has to take time to prepare for both tua & jalen. saban has said it in the past, why let the opposition prepare for one, when you can force them to prepare for two?

That's probably a factor, but I also think it's just part of Saban's whole "there is no depth chart" preseason mentality. He's going to insist every position is an open battle no matter how much of a lead any one player has.

Which is what he has done for going on 12 years now. I don't know why fans stress over this.

Me either. Some of y'all act like Saban has been an open book in regards to who is a starter in the past.

Probably because of things like losing the Auburn game with a much better qb on the bench, and starting the same struggling qb in the playoffs, only to turn to the better player when it could have been too late. It wasn't too late only because that qb was so much better, so why wasn't the player that was so much better already starting? After all, Saban promised the guy that the best player would start.

As much as I hated losing to Auburn, with a better qb on the bench, I bet there were players on that team that hated it even more than I did. Wonder what they were thinking.

Yeah not sure why it's so hard for people to understand. Not all that perplexing.

I’m car shopping, and when I called Mercedes Of Birmingham to check their inventory, I got this long spiel about how they were sure I was going to ask about that, because it’s all anyone ever asks about, and the answer was the same: to be determined. There is no price list.

There also were times last year where Tua didn't look too good. So there was both.

He still should've gotten a chance against Auburn, though.
