13 players out of 27 recruits from 2019 have transferred as of today (gone or in the portal).

I think that may be the norm in coming years

The life of the college football HC is going to be miserable going forward. Even the best coaches and best programs will not be able to navigate this much change year after year.

It certainly has to change the way you look at your roster. The depth aspect of it is going to be a whole lot more like the NFL where you are working on a year to year basis.

The max of 7 players you can add due to losing that many due to the portal can come from the portal and new signees or just from the portal?

Definitely will be challenging to build depth. Will be interesting to see if CNS starts using backups more in games that are blowouts and actually allow them to run the offense. If guys don't see a plan towards playing time they be gone.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I think the 7 additional signees can be from both new signees (HS) or portal guys

Then a coach has two rules to follow.

Early signing period...recruit based on that 25 max limit (exceptions as well) and 85 limit

Late signing period recruit other players on new unexpected numbers that transferred.

This doesn't seem correct. They would be better served to move the 1st date back to Feb as before the portal.

Surge or one of those guys can help more than me but I think you can replace guys who enter the portal at certain dates. Like we may not get to replace Marcus Banks or the ones who entered early . It’s either you can replace or not replace players who leave before / after your schools 1st semester is over… if that makes sense

Well, they do get paid millions of dollars after all.

I think they should eliminate early signing for HS recruits. Early enrollee can still come in January like before but with the transfer portal it changes everything.

I would love the see the transfer portal signing window go from Dec 15th to Jan 30th. Allow you to see and replace any player looking to transfer between semesters. Have a second window from April 15th to June 30th for players deciding and/or coaches identifying players based on spring training to go elsewhere.

Saban will master the new free agency system but will be interesting how to recruit moving forward.

Prior practice is to recruit 25 high profile athletes to come in as freshman. With the goal they stay 3 or 4 years based on development. Rinse and repeat.

Now it maybe recruit 15 high profile recruits plus 10 that have potential and can be developed over 3 or 4 years into starters/contributors . Use the portal to add another 3 or 5 high profile players that are looking to increase their draft potential each year.

Recruiting 25 4 or 5 stars each year with the prospect 10+ are not willing to wait their turn and transfer may eliminate the need to fill the class with that many 4 or 5 stars. Transfer portal may be the better way to solidify roster spots.

Any Bama WR entering the portal now is just admitting they aren't good enough to compete because that position basically has 3-4 "starters" and it's wide open heading into the spring.

"Wide open" is right. As many dropped passes as these next year "starters" had Monday, there is plenty of room for a transfer to win a spot.

Disagree. December signees can go ahead and enroll in January. Process works fine now, like basketball. Go after the high school players for December. Work the portal for February.

That's one of those deals where Saban is trying to find him somewhere he can play. Best of luck to him.

Did you know that Gene Newberry was the 1st early entree for Alabama back in 84/85 under Coach Perkins.

Gene was a QB from Blytheville, Arkansas.

You say how did he do? Well, he didn't.

It’s been a LONG time since I had no idea who our starting WRs would likely be for the next season.

Early signing isn’t the issue imho. The 85 scholarship limit needs to be changed to 105 now so the bottoms of rosters can be filled out. The 25 signees rule was to protect players from a coach recruiting them just to keep them away from another team. That should be eliminated completely. Sign however many you want as long as your tootsie number is 105
