ND is #10 in the 247 talent composite, so it's not like Rees was working with walk-ons. I think Riley getting so much production out of a TCU team with a talent composite ranked #32 is much more impressive.

This is why I'm meh on this as a potential hire. Does ND have a lot of talent compared to us? No, but they have a ton of talent compared to most of the teams on their schedule and their offense still wasn't dominant. Hopefully that was just due to pedestrian QB and WR play limiting quick score opportunities and reducing their number of possessions, but I think we were all hoping for someone with a strong track record and this feels kind of Golding-esque.

They were 42nd in scoring offense last season, not 20th. 60th in total offense. 98th in passing offense. 35th in rushing offense. 32nd in passing efficiency.

LINK

And I believe those numbers are all worse than the previous season but I haven't checked all the categories.

I think Grubb would have been a very good hire as OC as well as Lebby or Johnson and maybe Riley. On defense, I was hoping to get Schumann.

Not in 21 they weren't. They were 20th. Which was in response to you saying they were 45th in offense in 21. Which only reflects their total yardage.

Their offenses were better in 2020 and 2021 than 2022 where they were undergoing a regime change and probably had the least to work with of those three seasons.

Still, two seasons in the top 20 of FEI (a better stat than the “basic” ones, IMO) is a surprise, a good one. That makes me a bit more optimistic about Rees than I was when his name first popped up. They were 39th this past season, which is definitely a step down, but there were a lot of reasons for it. Still, the two seasons of top 20 performance shine through to me, and he’d have far better talent on offense here, far better QB play, and Nick Saban’s mind to help him. He’s also still 30 (turns 31 in March) and coaches do usually improve with time.

Sorry. Didn't know you were talking about 21. You are correct. It did regress in 22 though. Just don't like the downward trend in offense. Could be related to roster issues or injuries though.

I agree and willing to give him a chance. Just glad to have BoB leave.

I think it's a clear upgrade over the last OC as manager of the offense. So it's at least that

No worries. I think a big part of their regression was the staff change. Some Notre Dame fan on the rant showed that they were averaging like 38 points a game their last 7 games last season. It was the first 6 they struggled in. Maybe it just took a minute to adjust to have a new head coach and other changes.

I’d imagine Hartman will come too, if Rees takes the job. He’s the reason he transferred to Notre Dame and is considered a family friend.

Saban has never hired a flashy "hot" OC. Ever. We've hired out of nowhere guys (Mac, Nuss) and rehab guys (Lane, Sark, Locks, BoB).

I agree SOG

Some have really hit too that were unexpecting and not big name hires like Daboll.

I like Rees, he's young, innovative especially with TEs and the run game and had a good running game every year.

Him not leaving ND doesn't bother me too much since he played there and was a GA there.

Would Hartman even be eligible to transfer again? Guessing he can since he is a grad transfer?

Even promoting Joe Cox is probably an upgrade over BooB. Really anyone who understands that players can go in motion pre-snap, the QB is allowed to move outside the tackle box by design, and screen passes to RBs are legal plays.

Not to mention BoBs offense is all based around WRs reading open space and all this other very advanced stuff. That works ok in the NFL with the right experienced grown men personel. It's a disaster in college, especially at a place where you are going to turnover relievers as often as we do.

Gawd what a pile of shite that was.

If it Rees I'm not knocking it. I think he and the OL coach will have us playing physical ball.

I think it has been said multiple times. Saban thought the offense needed a lot of work, moreso than the defense. Clearly with the guys he is bringing into interview clear step away from the BoB "NFL" schemes

Looks like it departed Boca Grande for South Bend. It's now on track to arrive in Tuscaloosa.
