And the NCAA Transfer portal is much more comparable to the jobs discussed above, which is why non-competes and barriers to moving exist - because those employers know competitor employers scout other firms/agencies and attempt to poach talent.

Universities invest a lot in scholarship athletes, financially, academically and in their athletic development. But players can freely transfer to a direct competitor, also taking playbook, scheme and signals knowledge with them.

My biggest issue with the transfer portal as a free-for-all with immediate eligibility is what it will do to college basketball. Bigger schools are going to continue to swallow up young talent from mid-majors, who will jump at the opportunity to showcase their skills on a bigger stage. I personally believe this will reduce parity in college basketball and subsequently make the NCAA tournament a less exciting product.
Take Steph Curry. He went to Davison as a relatively unheralded recruit and promptly set the school freshman scoring record, racking up all kinds of awards. The next season he led 10-seed Davidson to the Elite Eight, upsetting Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Wisconsin before narrowly losing to eventual national champion Kansas. Under today's transfer rules, he would have left after his successful freshman season, likely to an ACC power, which means Davidson's cinderella run to the Elite Eight never happens.
I think it ultimately helps Alabama, but I don't like it.

I understand what your saying Surge. What I probably should've said is that when you see football sign 25+ every year, you know it's coming and really don't pay attention to the details. In basketball, we may see only 3-5 get signed a year so when you see a departure, it's A LOT more noticeable.

I agree with that and your post that I responded to. I was just adding a little info to support it.

"Yeah this isn't the same as some 18 year old fry cook at McDonald's taking his talents across the street to Wendy's for a 10¢ an hour raise. It's more akin to a lawyer moving between firms that represent clients who are adversarial or a former employee of a business leaving to start his own business that will be a direct competitor of his previous employer. There are pretty clear rules governing how those parties have to conduct themselves at their new positions. No such rules exist with the NCAA transfer portal."
I understand. I wasn't saying there shouldn't be some rules but a lot of the regular work force doesn't have those kind of strict rules about job placement.
Myself for example, I've worked for a supplier since 2008. We are the largest supply company in the country for our product. I am the Branch Operations Manager and manage our branch inventory that typically ranges between 4-5 million. I'm not on contract or have a non compete. The rules vary a great deal or don't exist depending on the industry.
But to your point, I do agree there should be some rules.

And it’s not just the size of your signing class, but the size of your roster in general. If we have 85 guys on the football team and 27 signees, we may not take much notice of a talented sophmore that hasn’t seen the field transferring or a signed recruit asking out of an LOI to open up a spot. The basketball roster has 13 guys, so it’s much easier to point to specific instances and relate to the limited number of players we’re following.

Good point.
I think this is really one of the biggest issues with the free transfer rules and why it won't last very long.

I think this year's version of the transfer portal is going to get a lot of play, but it is a one time thing. My biggest issue with the transfer stuff prior to this was the haphazard way the NCAA handed out "waivers" for free transfers.

Like how JQ had to sit out last year and may have had an opportunity to play his way into pro ball this year the way Quentin "I'm Going Pro Until They Fill My Scholarship Then I'm Getting That Waiver" Grimes did?

The interesting thing is that after this season we are going to hoping for free transfers to fill the backcourt positions on our team. We could possibly lose JD, Q, Shack, Primo and Ellis. Burnett could be our one experienced returning true guard.

The same basketball "insider" poster on BOL who predicted Wilson's departure says Rojas can stay as a non-counter. I assume that means he'd have to give up redshirting. If so, we're all set at 13.

How would he be a non-counter? I've never heard of such a rule.
Posted on 4/13/21 at 12:05 pm to TideSaint
He is averaging 9.6 points a game, 7.7 rebounds per game, shooting 57% FG, 57% from the free throw line and 29% from three.

This makes a lot of sense. We all assumed Rojas was the first man out, but if he’s a non-counter, keeping him and losing a signee or sophomore was the only possible scenario in which we don’t have to let multiple players go by taking Gurley. It sucks, but it is what it is.

We could also possibly, and probably return Shack, Ellis, and Burnett at least.
