Well, for one he's 2-3 inches taller and 20-30 lbs heavier than Jahvon is, which in and of itself gives him a lot more to work with at the rim.

And past that he finished at the rim in games against good teams (59% vs Top 150 teams).

For comparison - vs Top 150 teams at the rim FG% (guys under 6-4)

- Estrada (12 games) - 59.3% (#46 out of 277)
- Sears (29 games) - 52.7% (#120 out of 277)
- Quinerly (28 games) - 50.5% (#145 out of 277)

We were a different team the last month of the season because the backcourt all disappeared offensively, particularly from 3, save for JQ. Nice that we’re picking up some guys who can put the ball in the basket in multiple ways.

Yep, like with a lot of things you can clearly see Oats has zeroed in on a tweak to his philosophy. Long, stronger, veteran guys at guard and on the wings that can grind out shots at the rim and even in 1 on 1 situations if the in flow open shots aren't falling. Walton, Wrightsell and Estrada all fit that criteria.

We spent a good 20 years begging for a coach who had a system and put together a roster with an end product in mind and we got one of those. Just really impressed with the way Oats attacks problems.

Estrada has a very quick release, a decent handle, and is able to consistently get his own shot as a result. He's also good enough as a catch and shoot guy to play him with JQ unless he turns out to be a traffic cone defensively at this level. You have to have guards who create their own offense in March though. It's not one of those nice to have things either. It's pretty much a necessity.

Eastern Michigan sophomore Emoni Bates has entered the 2023 NBA Draft, Bates told @TheAthletic @Stadium. Bates, 19, was the top high school recruit, and played at University of Memphis in 2021-22 and EMU in 2022-23. He averaged 19.2 points at EMU.

This time two years ago I thought this guy was going to be a superstar for Izzo and Sparty.

Bates is a prime example of stage parenting gone wrong.

Those are some good points. The extra size was not something that I noticed on tape. That will be an advantage.

Hoping for the best from him. Oats seems to know what he's doing.

You are exactly right CPA Sears had maybe one game in the last 8 where he even made a 3. Miller dropped way off. Gurley couldnt make one. In our last game, if we had only made a couple, we might have won. All those misses were not because the other team was physical.

Seeing the guards we've recruited along with someone like Mack, makes me think that Oats is trying to add some elements in style that Dan Hurley uses. Running and tempo will tire a team out. But so will physicality. And there's a balance to strike between the two.

I would argue we are top 10 with the pickups in the portal and if everyone returns. A few of the freshman will contribute as well.

Glenn III played in only four games this season, but was a 4* recruit coming out of Calvary Christian (FL).

Another one we previously recruited.

In the NIL environment Vandy is essentially a mid-major program playing a P-6 schedule. Losing at least their top 2-3 players to the portal is probably going to be a common occurrence. We bitch and complain about our lack of NIL commitment compared to a lot of other big money athletics departments, but I have little doubt our NIL budget dwarfs theirs.

I hope Stack can get Vandy back in the bubble discussion next year and then hopefully see him get to replace Hubert at UNC. Stack would do so well there.
