The current inflation factor is reason enough not to build at this time.

Yeah, between inflation and labor shortages they'd get a letter every other month from the contractor asking for an extension and/or a change order. Construction is a mess right now.

Not saying I condone it though. Coleman should not have been relegated to "if we get around to it" status in the first place, which is why we're never going to get around to it.

But the cost will never come down. Even if inflation drops to 2%, that will be 2% more than it is today. It will keep costing more, not less, the longer he waits. I hope donors specify the donation for basketball, because as attendance keeps dropping for football, Byrne might have to take out those upper endzone decks and put in bars and restaurants and po man's club rooms and more bells and whistles to attract people. I switched football tickets from the upper deck to the lower level earlier this month. Whereas a few years ago, supposedly there was a 30K seat waiting list, there were/ are many seats available, and you could buy bunches in the upper decks - and Saban is still here and winning. Younger people just do not buy season tickets as my generation (I'm 69) did and do.

ESPN CBB Preseason Top 25

1. North Carolina
2. Gonzaga
3. Houston

4. KENTUCKY
quote:

One of the more intriguing storylines entering next season for the Wildcats involves Jacob Toppin and whether he is poised for a breakout season. Toppin has shown flashes of his ceiling -- 16 points against Vanderbilt in 2021, 14 and eight against LSU, and 13 and six against Alabama last season -- but has not yet produced consistently enough to be a surefire starter. He has elite physical skills, though, and in the two games last season in which he played more than 30 minutes, he averaged 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds. Granted, it was just the two, but he didn't look out of place.

Whether he takes the next step could determine how John Calipari's lineup looks in 2022-23. Five-star recruit Chris Livingston is more of an offensive threat and has good size at 6-7, while Illinois State transfer Antonio Reeves and CJ Fredrick provide shooting ability in a potentially smaller lineup.

Projected starting lineup:

Sahvir Wheeler (10.1 PPG)
Cason Wallace (No. 20 in ESPN 100)
Antonio Reeves (20.1 PPG at Illinois State)
Chris Livingston (No. 12 in ESPN 100)
Oscar Tshiebwe (17.4 PPG)

5. Duke
6. Kansas
7. Creighton
8. Baylor
9. UCLA

10. ARKANSAS
quote:

It was less than three months ago that we pegged Arkansas as the initial No. 1 team in the Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings. But that was before JD Notae, Au'Diese Toney and Jaylin Williams opted to leave Fayetteville, and so the Razorbacks are now settled around No. 10. Coach Eric Musselman prepared for the potential loss of Williams by landing four frontcourt players in the portal, including brothers Makhel and Makhi Mitchell from Rhode Island. It wouldn't be a surprise to see one of them start in early November.

But Missouri transfer Trevon Brazile has NBA potential, and his physical skills and shot-blocking ability could allow the Razorbacks to play smaller and use him up front. Another option is Arizona State transfer Jalen Graham, an All-Pac-12 selection who was terrific over the final two months of last season.

Projected starting lineup:

Anthony Black (No. 15 in ESPN 100)
Nick Smith (No. 3 in ESPN 100)
Ricky Council IV (12.0 PPG at Wichita State)
Jordan Walsh (No. 11 in ESPN 100)
Makhel Mitchell (10.7 PPG at Rhode Island)

11. Texas

12. AUBURN
quote:

Wendell Green Jr. and K.D. Johnson have been the subject of much debate so far this spring. Both were prone to inconsistency and subpar decision-making last season, but they were also the two primary playmakers for a team that won the SEC regular-season title and earned a 2-seed in the NCAA tournament. Next year, however, the Tigers won't have No. 1 pick Jabari Smith or Defensive Player of the Year Walker Kessler to potentially bail them out. They, along with starting point guard Zep Jasper, will have to be far more efficient.

That said, few teams in the country have a guard duo with as much explosiveness as the Tigers'. Despite coming off the bench in all but five games, Green had 12 outings with at least 15 points and seven with at least seven assists. Johnson, meanwhile, is uber-aggressive at both ends of the floor and scored at least 15 points on 11 occasions. More shots are coming their way, too.

Projected starting lineup:

Wendell Green Jr. (12.0 PPG)
K.D. Johnson (12.3 PPG)
Allen Flanigan (6.3 PPG)
Yohan Traore (No. 27 in ESPN 100)
Johni Broome (16.8 PPG at Morehead State)

13. TENNESSEE
quote:

May was a huge month for Rick Barnes' program with the additions of recruits Julian Phillips and D.J. Jefferson and the return of first-team All-SEC guard Santiago Vescovi. But the arrival of Phillips could be the real game-changer for the Volunteers next season. He is Tennessee's sixth five-star recruit in the past four classes and is projected to be a borderline lottery pick in ESPN's most recent 2023 mock draft. Phillips is long, versatile and a capable jump-shooter from different areas in the half court. He still has room to grow at both ends of the floor, but he has the potential to be a go-to guy for the Volunteers next season. Without Kennedy Chandler, Tennessee might be less dynamic at the point of attack, but Phillips, Vescovi and Josiah-Jordan James provide plenty of versatility.

Projected starting lineup:

Zakai Zeigler (8.8 PPG)
Santiago Vescovi (13.3 PPG)
Julian Phillips (No. 13 in ESPN 100)
Josiah-Jordan James (10.3 PPG)
Olivier Nkamhoua (8.6 PPG)

14. Villanova
15. Indiana
16. Arizona
17. TCU
18. Oregon

19. ALABAMA
quote:

In an ideal world, Jahvon Quinerly would be fully recovered from the torn ACL he suffered in the NCAA tournament by the time SEC play rolls around, and Alabama will have one of the deepest and most talented backcourts in the country. We'll have to wait and see. But coach Nate Oats has point guard options either way. Mark Sears is the veteran. The Ohio transfer averaged 19.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season, shooting better than 40% from 3. Jaden Bradley is the five-star freshman. He is physical with the ball in his hands and loves getting into the lane and finishing at the rim or finding an open teammate. From the outside looking in, both players are likely to start in the backcourt immediately and will give Oats a guard tandem that can do a little bit of everything.

Projected starting lineup:

Mark Sears (19.6 PPG at Ohio)
Jaden Bradley (No. 19 in ESPN 100)
Dominick Welch (12.3 PPG at St. Bonaventure)
Brandon Miller (No. 9 in ESPN 100)
Charles Bediako (6.7 PPG)

20. Virginia
21. San Diego State
22. Texas Tech
23. Dayton
24. UConn
25. Illinois

Next : Michigan, Miami, Saint Louis, Xavier, Ohio State

I like our tempered expectations and Auburn’s inflated one’s. I’m not sold on Bruce’s group at all

I'm not either. Broome was a huge get and seems like a really solid player, but Kessler's other worldly ability to completely take away the lane combined with Jabari being able to get and make any short on their side of the floor was a huge part of their success and will not be replaced.

The idea that the ball will be in the hands of KD Johnson/Wendell Green 75% of the time would absolutely terrify me. I still have no idea why Green plays more than Jasper. Hopefully Bruce doesn't make Jasper a 30-35 mpg PG, because he's very good as a pass first/defender PG.

Of course, on the flip side, Flanigan could look more like his old self and that would be a big plus for them.

I'd replace Bradley with Burnett unless Miller isn't ready to play some point-forward. More defensive versatility, and you really don't need 3 ball handlers on the floor together.

Those two finally remembering that they're low efficiency, ball stopping volume scorers was a really big reason for Auburn's late season collapse.

I dont know about that. Lumber has already come down. It depends on whether we get into a real recession and people are out of work. The housing market is already starting to fall off. Its hard to know what the heck is going to happen, though.

Yep. Burnett will start with Sears at PG. Oats will start the season allowing Burnett to show what he can do after sitting out a year with injury and transferring. Other than that, Welch, Miller and Bediako should be the other three. But like many have said, who starts is not really the important issue. Just got to find the five that match up the best and get it done based on the opponent.

Think you could sort of pick apart every SEC team in the top 25. Tshiebwe is just a complete monster and I’m sure they have some good freshmen, but I don’t think Wheeler is good. I think it’s a question of how much does he hold them back.

Arkansas will probably have some weird performances at the beginning of the season and be a top 2-3 team by the end of the season.

I think Auburn will be a terror at home, but the erratic guards will bite them on the road.

Tennessee will be good but in a Rick Barnes sort of way. Side note: we have three more years of listening to Jimmy Dykes talk about how tough Zakai Ziegler is. frick.

And I definitely don’t have a good sense of how good we’re going to be.

Agreed, but I might be biased because I can't stand his playing style.

Tough, smart, high effort on defense, clunky offense that frequently shits the bed. Especially in postseason environments when everyone else is playing just as hard as they are. Rick Barnes is what Anthony Grant would have been for us if he had been willing to let boosters buy him a good roster.

We will be 17-9 in mid-February. As is tradition.

RJ Johnson catching the eyes of SEC programs

RJ Johnson emerged heading into his sophomore year of high school and showed early high major promise at the time. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound point guard out of Huntsville (Ala.) Grissom is raising his stock yet again and really helped himself over the weekend at the Southeast Regional.

He's clearly been putting work in behind the scenes showing improved playmaking ability with the ball in his hands, has gotten in better shape and his athleticism has really taken off because of it.

He's a physical and tough point guard with explosiveness in space, he plays well through contact, is a good rebounder, passer and defender.

The next step is continuing to develop his scoring ability but his ability to impact the game in every other area has caught the interest of two SEC programs.

“It started heating up ever since I came down here.," Johnson said of his recruitment. "I got to showcase all my talent and everything that I have been working on. I got the platform so now I am here.”

Johnson explained more on what he has been working on and what has led to this jump in his development.

“Being more of a leader and just working on getting downhill, finding the open spots and finding the open teammates and being a coach on the floor," he said.

Alabama and Tennessee have all expressed interest recently and he's hoping to get an offer from one of them soon.

He discussed what his conversations have been like with each so far.

Alabama: “They said they were going to follow up with me so we will see what happens. Of course, I will be happy to play anywhere. I just want to be on the big stage with the bright lights."

Tennessee: “They like the way that I play hard and if I keep it up and keep my body in shape then I have a chance to be a high level prospect.

Aside from Alabama and Tennessee showing interest, he said FAU, Tennessee Tech and Wichita State all offered over the weekend.

It's only the beginning stages of Johnson's recruitment and will be one to keep an eye on this July.

Dylan James is on the rise; talks recruiting

Dylan James made his way into the 247Sports Top150 but has been stirring up some buzz over the last six months and is proving to be worthy of a sizable bump in the rankings.

"Right now I feel like I am a four but trying to move more over to the three," he described of his game. "I like to shoot threes, play out of the mid-post and I can bang down low. I feel like I am more of a defensive player than an offensive player."

The 6-foot-8, 195-pound power forward out of Winter Haven (Fla.) is a long and athletic power forward who can stretch the floor, defend, rebound, rim-run and his frame holds promise.

"The spring was great, honestly," said James. "I played with 1Family and got a few offers and was bringing coaches to the game so that's what I am most proud of."

James' recruitment has remained steady but with some July evaluation periods in the near future, he could see more look to get involved.

"It's going pretty well," he said of his recruiting process. "I still have some coaches calling and coming in. I think I am going to go on a few visits in August and September and will cut my list down in July and then make a decision in the fall."

Who would James like to visit?

"I'm not really sure, probably most likely Iona, VCU, Alabama, UCF, Miami and I probably want to go to Florida too," he said.

Up to this point, he has only taken one unofficial visit and that was to UCF which is right down the road from him.

He discussed a few of his suitors with 247Sports and why he is intrigued by them.

Alabama: "I love the coaches, I like what they did in the past few years getting a few Draft picks and that's the ultimate goal. They got something good going on and Sam [Walters] committed there and he's a good player so they got something good going on."

Florida: "They just got a new staff and I love them a lot. They got a young staff. Coach [Todd] Golden, he's cool. Coach [Kevin] Hovde, I love both of them."

Iona: "Coach [Tom] Abatemarco was here watching me this weekend and I think Rick Pitino was on a trip somewhere but I will definitely see him in July. I hope to see him soon. It means a lot, he has been in the game a long time and he knows what he is talking about. Him calling me personally and telling me what I am doing good and that I am around the right people."

VCU: "Coach [Mike] Rhoades and coach [Jamal] Brunt, they have been here all weekend watching me and they show love for sure. Their play style matches my play style so they will definitely be someone that I consider."

James currently ranks as the No. 149 overall prospect in the 2023 class.
