You say one spot but with JQ out for at least half the season, it turns into being down 2 spots for the season. That’s before someone inevitably gets hurt before November. As we saw this off-season, it’s very easy to push someone out of the program so I once again say it makes zero sense to not bring someone in for that slot.

Hopefully Heard is good enough to fill that spot. The Oak Hill thing doesn't really tell the story, though. He was on the equivalent of the JV team his first 2 years (Red). His senior year he was on Gold but only played 5 games (all blowouts against small private schools) and scored a total of 16 pts the whole season.
So, technically he did go to Oak Hill. But he never played.

My biggest thing is, if almost everyone agrees the roster makeup was off this year, why would we want to fill it with ANYONE or just a warm body??
Finding good kids is not that hard, especially when you lower the bar for a scholarship. Hell, find a less talented Rojas for all I care. All we need is insurance for if we lose a couple guys to injuries (which is far from out of the question).

McKillop’s son, Matt, will take over as head coach, source told @Stadium.
The 71-year-old has been the head coach at Davidson since 1989. He had a 634-380 career record.

All time great college coach and the epitome of a class act. College basketball could use more McKillops.

i do think our depth downlow is solid but added security for worst case scenerios like that never hurts. was personally hoping for a giddens 2.0 to take bitches out when needed but oh well.

I stand corrected. Just saw the school. Still would rather a walk on, Heard or another, get a scholarship than a mediocre player to be the 13th man who has no experience in the system. If a Dirk Nowitzki-type player shows up from Europe, I'm all for that guy getting a spot.

I just don’t get pushing out a guy like Gary
Do we know he was actually pushed out? He may have not wanted to accept a reduced role from what he'd gotten accustomed. He'll definitely get more minutes at Nebraska.

and turning down other transfers just to leave the spot open
That's the thing with the portal. You have guys who are top priorities. If you wait on taking a commitment because you're going to sign someone else, you'll sometimes miss out on all your targets. It's like walking a tightrope. And with NIL in the mix, things are more unpredictable and can change faster then ever before. You'll think you have a guy, and someone swoops in and pays him. That's always been a thing, but never like it's become.

That's kinda of my opinion. Try to get transfers who will actually help. If you strike out, reward a walk-on. The only thing that makes this off-season more stressful, is Quinn being injured until early '23, having us down 2 spots. But Quinn had proven he's worth the risk (last year wasn't great, but he has been the SEC tournament MVP, so he obviously can play).
Personally, I'm just gonna burn one and quit worrying about it. We have an interesting season approaching, with a high ceiling and low floor. I think if guys don't have their heads up their asses, and realize playing good team ball will help get them drafted before good individual ball. Because if that happens, and our recruits aren't busts, we should have a damn solid team that'll be fun as hell to watch.

I agree with Trojan, if the reports of last year were true that we had issues with guys caring more about their own production over sacrificing for the team maybe this was a culture decision. We heard reports that Bridges, and Lucas’ visits didn’t go so well, maybe Oats didn’t necessarily want to take on a diva just to fill out the roster. Who knows, it’s all speculation, but it seems Oats has a very specific outlook on next year’s team.
I'm pretty sure Oats knows the direction that he wants this team headed in.

Oats does have a tendency to get a little irrationally excited about his roster during the off-season. In that sense, he is truly one of us.
I think that we could have found a guy that wasn’t a “diva”, but it seems like he just doesn’t want to mess with what he’s got.

I think a guy like the Durugordon kid from Missouri would have been good in the last spot if he would have wanted it. A year in the system and a chance to be a contributor next year. If it doesn't work out, put him back in the portal again next year.
Delaney Heard is a junior, so if we give him the last scholarship this year is he going to get it next year too? That's fine if he is a scholarship worthy player and not just the best player out of the walkons, I guess.

From everything I’ve heard or been told, it seems like Darius is locked in rn. Guessing we’ll get a better version of 2020 Darius this season. He just has to have the right group around him to succeed and he has it this year. That’s why I brought up 2020 when he had leaders around him to keep his head on straight. Last year he didn’t have that and it didn’t work out well. I’m VERY excited about him now.

That is really good to hear. He's got a ton of talent if he can just put it all together. Anything else I've missed over the last week?
