Is Oats more of a sunshine pumper? Or a more realism type?
I always despise coaches like Mahlzan rambling about "Heisman potential" when in fact his players sucked.
I'm not comparing Oats to that at all.
I hope he's a true realist and he truly does have great players now.

If Nimari turns into the shooter he was billed as out of high-school on top of being a lockdown defender we will probably have the best back court in the country next year between him, JQ, Shack, and JD.

I don't know when "realism" became a substitute for poor-mouthing, but in any event I think Oats is pretty much always going to be over the top positive about his teams if he thinks he has a good one. Last year took some time but he turned out to be completely justified in all the praise he had heaped on them during the offseason. The guy is going to run his mouth. It's how he's wired. He gets to do that if he backs it up though.

He definitely is candid about his teams, but I wouldn't say he's over the top either. He definitely will give you more than most coaches and I would say he's usually right in the middle of not being too critical and making sure he's praising guys, while also identifying things specific players and/or the overall team needs to improve on. If he's saying these things about JD and especially Gurley, I think we should expect big things from both of them. Looks like Gurley and JD will be good to great for us, Burnett and Bediako will contribute, and Holt will probably not play much if at all (needs more time).

I think the Gurley comments are the most exciting to hear because I think we expected most of the rest what he said coming in.

My favorite part was about Burnett breaking shooting drill records. That's very encouraging to hear considering his struggle last year. Pairing that with his already outstanding defense will make him a big part of our team next year!

Here's the Oats interview from yesterday where he said all this if you want to listen to it.

Mine too. Everything he said about the other guys was about what you'd expect. Whether we could fix Burnett's shot was somewhat of a question mark though, so Oats indicating that a lot of progress has been made there is a really big deal.

There was an Oats interview in The Athletic last summer ( LINK) where he said this about Ambrose-Hylton:

quote:

Keon Ambrose-Hylton, a 6-8 freshman, is an active, athletic, high-energy option who “is going to play, has to play, because he does all the stuff it takes to win,” Oats says.

I was all in on Ambrose-Hylton for a while after that. That one hasn't quite worked out yet.

His Darius Miles quote seems pretty on the nose though:

quote:

Freshman Darius Miles is a 6-6 string bean with some real promise. “If he puts some weight on and the light ever completely turns on,” Oats says, “he’s got a chance, because he’s really skilled.”

Also that article was a reminder that the Bruner hype was real and legit and boy it was a shame that he was just basically unplayable by the end of the year because of injuries.

He was a great shooter in HS and has elite range, as you can see from watching his HS highlights, so that doesn't surprise me.

Auburn insiders are saying that Auburn will probably only have 11 scholarship players this year now that Thor stayed in the draft and Sills couldn't get in.

Gonna be rough if they get an injury or two.

Been a rough couple of weeks for Bruce with Henderson opting to go pro, Thor staying in the draft, and Sills not gaining eligibility. They'll still be pretty good, but yeah an 11 man roster is an injury or two away from a pretty dire situation. We learned that all too well during Grantsketball.

I don't think Oats is too much of a sunshine pumper. I did get incredibly hyped after reading that article last summer and of course, we didn't come out of the gate looking like that team.

However, nothing he has said is really surprising. We have Holt penciled in as the Miles kinda sit and wait project player this year. We knew Gurley was going to be a great fit. Of course, the hype for JD is real. I think what stands out the most is Burnett's shooting. Hopefully, this means his shooting last year was just a fluke and he wasn't comfortable in their system.

I'm really just excited to see a balanced roster. We have Guard depth and finally have multiple ballhandlers and we have multiple big guys than can hit shots with range. As long as the team stays healthy, Oats has a lot to play with this year.

Oats shouldn’t have come out with this today…. Because Dear God did I get excited, and now my expectations have risen DRASTICALLY.

In game one I am not sure Bediako or Davison starts, but game one is probably the most unimportant game of the season. By SEC play I have no doubt that Davison is starting, Bediako is a hard read, I think Tchikou is the better player but will he be 100%?

I think Bediako is way better than some people in this thread give him credit for, if he was ranked one spot higher on 247 he would've been a 5 star. I think he will be very good whether he starts or not. We are loaded and I can't wait til this season starts.

I don’t think JD or Bediako start game 1. I think JD will eventually work his way into the starting 5 and Bediako is 7’0 he will play significant minutes too but won’t start over Tchikou(if healthy) who is also 7’0 but is EXTREMELY SKILLED. If Tchikou stays in 2021 he is a no doubt 5* recruit.

I think JD will be all SEC and I think year 2 is when Bediako becomes a force and All SEC
