Could be Philon is still in play. Worst case scenario, we just had 2 straight years of a high usage point guard where we’re really running dribble handoffs from bigs and not really traditional PG facilitator shite. I’m pretty sure Bethea, Biz, and just about any guard with decent handles could run point in our system.

Houston doesn't have a real point guard and they beat Duke...you know why?
They play hard, they are tough, they play defense, and they didn't play scared. They went after Duke.
Bama was SOFT!
Cliff Omoruyi missed two dunks. Grant Nelson missed easy put backs and layups. We missed WIDE open three's as well.
Alabama issue has always been that we are too SOFT and aren't good defensively. It showed!

If Philon returns, all good.. Do think a consistent effective threat for dribble penetration and finishing is pretty critical for our offense to truly work. Sears and Estrada caught a fair amount of grief over the past few years for forcing dribble penetration, but the reality is, if we can't threaten the rim with guard play to finish at the rim or kickout, we become a pretty easy cover. I just don't know if I can see Holloway being able to carry that load consistently or against sizable teams, but as always, I could be wrong.

I see it differently. Alabama played hard just like Houston for the first 30 minutes but fell apart due to their inefficiency on offense and inability to force turnovers on defense. We were too high turnover and low takeaway to beat the very best teams consistently. They actually did a solid job on Flagg and Alabama game stayed within striking distance for the majority of the game. Alabama just had too many turnovers and didn't really disrupt Duke's offense as a unit.
I think, and this is wild with Mark Sears arguably being the most accomplished Alabama basketball player in college, the problem is our guards aren't really great fits for this scheme besides the shooting ability. We need guards with length and explosiveness who can get into passing lanes and finish through contact at the rim. Philon could be that guy but the midseason injury he was nursing sorta robbed the development needed to get us over the top. However that's one guy. With the pace we run, you're going to need several of those guys.
I'm cautiously excited about the prospect that Philon returns because on paper we're a team that will have shooters everywhere around him. They ought to be able to run an offense that gives him spacing to operate after the initial set is defended and we just need to spread the defense out and let him find a basket or pass for an open shot. Also, he was probably our best guard at playing the passing lanes too.

Holloway is probably a better bench guard than starter and that's why Philon returning would be clutch. He's very streaky offensive player and his defense is mediocre at best and often much worse than that. Bench minutes where you let him cook when he's on a heater is his best fit without a dramatic change in his game.

and Bama beat Houston. Oats has beaten Sampson 4 times in a row.
Basketball is almost entirely matchup based. Styles, gameplans, personnel...etc. Duke was a terrible matchup for Sears because he relies on angles, using the width of his shoulders to keep the ball away from defenders. Because he isnt terribly quick. Duke's length erased this.
LJ Cryer is the same size as Sears, but he's quicker and shiftier, allowing him to create space to get his shot off. But defensively, He couldn't guard Sears as well on those drives when we played Houston, because Sears could pin him on his trailing hip with his shoulders, and Cryer couldn't go over the top with length.

You’re right. Mark had a lot of points against Houston but most of them came from the free throw line. We got their bigs in foul trouble and I can’t remember if Wrightsell played that game or not.

He did. He was injured against Oregon which was the game after Houston.

Another BIG get! Huge upside! Great perimeter length, shooting, and defensive upside.

So what’s the feel on Philon? Feels like with him the upside of this team would be massive.

Gonna be a lot of learning on the job with new pieces but the ceiling is much higher with Philon on board. I wouldn’t be surprised if this team was another top 8 seeds in the tourney type team with Philon.
