Maybe not seen as a center but more of a versatile bench forward?
edit: versatile as in "can defend multiple positions credibly." Arguably our big problem with becoming a great defensive team the last two seasons is due to too few players having flexibility on positions they could adequately guard.

would be nice if he didn't shoot 45%, yes 45%, from the free throw line.
Guys act like shooting granny style is embarrassing. I don't understand how scoring points underhanded is more embarrassing than bricking free shots.
Coaches should require guys who shoot sub 65% to shoot granny style on principle. Either get good or get points

You can’t build a great defensive team with just forwards and centers anymore. These days, all five players on the floor need to play strong defense.

Yes, and he played 7.7 minutes per game on a team that was very thin in the front court and prone to foul trouble there. Notice he spent the offseason working on his shooting and still didn't start and only played 16 minutes per game.
Right. Mo didn't play much because he couldn't shoot and you can't really afford to have more than 2 of those on the floor at a time. And he still had multiple games where we needed his energy and effort to win the game. Not everyone on our roster needs to play 20 minutes every night. And again, we now have a big that can shoot, meaning the spacing wouldn't present any more problems than when we used Bediako, Pringle, Wague, or Omoruyi, especially considering Chest is a vertical spacer as much as any of those guys listed.
While I would prefer the junkyard dog that can shoot, as it allows us to neutralize rim protectors, I can also understand wanting to have somebody who can fill that role regardless.

If Mo transfers, then I guess I can see it. Otherwise, whose minutes would he get? Mo's? How many undersized 5s or non-shooting 4s do we need? While everyone is clamoring for Mo to start, Oats is telling you he doesn't fit by only putting him out there limited minutes. And Mo is a much better shooter than Chest.
Anyway, like I said, if the coaches want him, then fine. I just don't see him having enough of a role to come to Bama. If Jarin and Mo both leave, I guess. But, I don't know why we would want him if we can find a 4 that can shoot at least a little.

Everyone is probably hoping for Mo to start, but I think differently. I’d prefer to see him play as the sixth man because he’s a versatile player who can do a lot of things.
If Mo plays as the sixth man, he can help bridge the gap between the starters and the bench.

Noah Williamson would be an incredible get. His game is very similar to Grant's, but he has a much better 3 ball. You could even play him alongside Sherrell and have two 7-footers but still stretch the floor.
Think we also need a secondary primary ball handler. Hopefully it's Philon returning, but if not someone like Burries or a transfer.
The Bethea and Wooley smoke is interesting, because to me we've got too many 2s/3s as it is (Wrightsell, Mallette, Hannah, Allen, Stevenson, Reid, Naas). There will probably be a lot of attrition in that group of returners.

I’m starting to feel like Wrightsell may not be on the team. He’s already mentioned that he’s essentially looking at next year as a business decision. I don’t know that we want to get into any kind of bidding war for a guy coming off an Achilles who can’t stay healthy.

Sherell impressed me. He'll only get stronger and better and he can stretch the floor. with his shooting.
We have to get another big at least and Williamson would be perfect for what we do. The Floridas and Auburns of the world will have to come out from under the basket cant play drop coverage with those guys on the floor. and it would open it up for our men to drive.
Duke couldn't have brought a big to double our shooters with this young man out there.

quote:Yep, Williamson would provide a lot of optionality for us. Not sure how athletic he is, but that would potentially leave us without a true lob threat like Pringle or Cliff. That's where Bol Bowen would be a nice get.

Has a good looking 3 point stroke for a big.

Yep, and you can't defend well unless you can handle a matchup created by switch. Obviously, I don't expect the guard to handle getting backed down by a big but I think the problems Duke and Florida caused for us was their supreme position versatility on defense combined with size.
If you have length and athleticism at every position then switches can be handled in a way where you take away jumpers and still can handle the dribble drive. That really bogs down the effectiveness of our offense. Also, plain and simple, if we were bigger at guard these matchups on offense when we face teams like Duke and Florida would not be quite a dire either.
I think the next step for Alabama as a program is being able to run full court with the shortest guy on the court being 6'3'' or taller (real height not listed). Smaller guards like Quinerly and Sears simply have their limits and they're usually going to be found amongst the upper crust teams in the tourney. We need guards who can rise above a lot of contact at the rim. We need guards who aren't completely overmatched defensively against guard and wing players with some size and length.

Talent is talent. I don’t care how tall a guy is as long as he can get open. He could be Isaiah Thomas or Marquis Nowell for all I care. Sears’s weakness has always been creating separation. That shows up big against elite teams who have bigs that can defend in space.

Would be nice if we can get players from Duke or Florida to transfer to Alabama. ??

Rylan Griffen entered the portal.
A reporter said a reunion wouldn't be out the question.
Seems weird to think of him returning

Rylan could hit some clutch 3’s in big moments when he was at Bama. I wouldn’t mind having his shooting abilities back, but I’m not sure if there’s space for him with the guards we have now.

Williamson looks very similar to Sherrell. I’d like to have a more athletic big who can block shots and clean the glass, not necessarily two 7’0’s with the same skillset.
