Oats has basically said the same thing for at least a month now.

1. Limit turnovers
2. Would like to see the defense improve
3. See more effort and earn your playing time
4. Good day at practice, put the last game behind you

There is almost no point in paying attention to his press conferences at this point haha

Another exhibit in the case against Oats just being basketball Gus. I hate so much that I completely agree with that comparison. It's really not a bad thing in a sport where you just need to get on a roll at the right time, but the year to year inconsistency is going to drive all of us fricking insane.

Hopefully he's able to adjust a little more than Gus did.

We will see. Hell, if he will just start taking the occasional timeout to try and stop a 7-0 run from becoming a 14-2 run I'd be happy. At least that would show that there's some self scouting going on. Again though, I struggle to put a ton of blame on him for a lot of this team's issues. He unexpectedly lost two good-great perimeter defenders he was likely counting on and made the understandable mistake of assuming our leadership situation wouldn't be a disaster considering we have 3 upperclassmen in our starting lineup.

Not really he’s just very to himself. Not everyone has that team captain/locker room speech vibe. I’m sure he’s respected by the team he just doesn’t go Tim Tebow on em.

Some of the leadership issue is just bad luck to not have that one guy in the mix.

I completely believe JQ, Shack and Ellis are great kids. Going to games you can tell by how they handle themselves. JQ just seems to be a very happy-go-lucky laid back guy and Ellis is obviously a bit introverted. Shack 's a real laid back guy too. If he'd returned. Primo seemed pretty quiet as well.

Some of that is just bad luck to not have a real strong upperclass vocal leader in the mix but no reason to berate these guys. If anything it's on recruiting to bring that type guy in if you know the players personalities you're dealing with.

That said, the disappointment with JQ et al has been that he hasn't always led by example on the defensive end in the sense of stepping in to take a charge instead of giving a matador hand wave.

Last year, we had Petty asking to be put on the best scorer in crunch time and Herb diving around like a mad man with a cast on his arm.

Im really not buying the oats being luke Gus bullshite. Does he need to adjust some things? Yes. Gus didnt recruit his sport like oats has his, this is the best coach we ve had since wimp and it really isnt a debate.

I was more specifically referring to his general coaching, very specific system, etc.

In tons of ways Oats > Gus - recruiting being one, but also the fact that basketball is a sport where having a very specific system and not having a bunch of adjustments isn't all that bad, especially compared to football.

And Gus had really damn good teams when he had the right guys in place to run his system. He never adjusted and more head scratchingly never seemed to recruit the types of guys (specifically QBs) that fit his system.

It's pretty wild how efficient our offense STILL is even with all the turnovers (not to mention the below average 3 point shooting).

If any season proves Oats system on offense is the way to go, this one has to be it. Basically all the things that should prove it doesn't work have happened and we still have an efficient offense.

Nobody is even close to our efficiency with a turnover rate around 20%.

Also, when it comes to defense, there is one big issue that we don't talk about a ton (partly because it is a symptom of the stuff we do talk about) - we barely cause ANY turnovers. A lot of that is because physically we can't force anybody to do anything, especially opposing guards. But if you can't turn people over, it's gonna be REALLY hard to be an above average defense.

This is 2021, FYI

You can run an extended trapping zone and play as fast as anyone.
I was referring to using a zone as the fundamental defense.
Unless you're Nolan Richardson and have a "40 minutes of hell" type roster, it ain't happening against an aggressive team with guards who have ball handling skills.

Forced Turnover Rate / Turnover Rate

Bottom Left - Don't force many turnovers, turn the ball over a lot

Being in the same quadrant with Missouri and Georgia is not good for any aspect of college basketball

And even more difficult in 2022 when so many guys can shoot outside shots.

Your only shot there is if you have a really long, active bunch of guys who have good instincts. I actually think our roster last year could have been a really good zone team (though like every other basketball person playing zone feels gross LOL).

If I'm not mistaken, we had to burn 2 timeouts Saturday because we couldn't get the ball inbounds. JD always inbounds when he's in the game. Most of the time he struggles to find an open man. Calling timeouts in that situation is as good as a turnover to me.

Something that a lot of people don't understand is that everybody is NOT cut out to be a leader.
That is a trait that a recruiter should look for when first evaluating a kid. The head coach should be sure that it's an important aspect of the type kid they're looking for, and have 1 or 2 each recruiting cycle. If not, we're seeing what happens.
If you're fortunate enough to have a multiple of them, your job is a helluva lot easier and more successful.
