I'm not so sure about the nba ready. Let's let him play a few games. He did a great job of not forcing things after he made a few, tough for a good young player to do.

Yeah, only reason JQ doesn't pile up assists is that basketball refuses to adopt hockey's superior criteria for that stat.
In basketball's defense, the hockey assist is an extremely difficult thing to keep track of in basketball considering the number of field goals and the back and forth nature of each game.

More made shots yes, but I'd say hockey is even more back and forth if anything. It'd ultimately be a judgment call on the scorer's part anyway. It just doesn't sit well with me that a guard who makes a difficult pass to a teammate who immediately makes a simple pass to another teammate who makes a shot doesn't get credited with an assist even though he's the one who really made the play. And that happens a lot with us on drive and kick plays.

Davison is NBA ready.
Yep. He's more NBA ready than Primo was, and Primo went in the 1st round.

Yeah, the Assists stat has always struck me as far too blunt.
It's even less telling in an offense like Oats where many of the best passes lead to 3 pt shots instead of layups where you're only hoping for a 40% success rate on a potentially perfect assist.
In soccer, the "key pass" stat is much more telling than raw assists since it's basically the significant pass in a sequence that leads to a good scoring chance.
It's the more difficult/visionary pass in the sequence like you mention and also doesn't depend on whether the guy makes the gimme layup or open 3 pointer you've set up.
Not sure about Oats' but I would think something like this would be used by basketball coaches that are very stats driven.

Sorry if already posted, but I don’t remember seeing it. News Courier write up from the game.

Ellis was 5-of-7 shooting, including three 3-pointers, and had nine rebounds off the bench. It was a carryover from some hot practice shooting exploits, including in the team’s drill where players launch 100 3-pointers from different spots.
“He’s been shooting lights-out in practice,” Tide coach Nate Oats said. “We call it our ‘NBA 100,’ shoot 100 3s similar to what you do in an NBA workout when you’re going to work out for a team.
“He shot 85 out of 100 at one point last week, which is fairly impressive.”

I'm more-so talking about the back and forth after each field goal. Play doesn't stop after a point is scored so it's hard to keep live stats of the hockey assist in basketball. I don't disagree that they deserve credit for it, just that it's much harder to keep track of in basketball.

Quin is. I meant to say coming in as a freshman. My bad.

The Wimpster on wjox this morning said the three A's,
Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas are going to be really good this year. He said Auburns defense will be the best its been under Pearl. I think he said they have 2 really good big men. He finished by saying Alabama and Auburn are going to be really, really good.

agree. His game is very attractive to most H.S. players, and they feel that it will showcase their athleticism and scoring ability.
I really like that bothBama and AU with Oats and Pearl run systems that seem to be built on empowering players to make plays and maximize their talent even if there is some risk if mistake. It makes games more entertaining and fun to watch
Watching a team such as Michigan St under Izzo or UVA under Bennett is painfully boring. It's all about execution with no freedom from players to adapt to the situation and make a play
I like watching the Marshall Henderson's of the world. Some of my favorite memories are him hitting game winning shots and jersey popping our student section. Hated it and him, but loved that it happened. Was exciting and fun

Well, we run a motion offense, so we're not really going to see just one guy dominate the Assist category. But yeah if we had a hockey assist category, his numbers would be through the roof haha

I told people on here JD isn't a one trick pony. He is at his best in transition with the ball in his hands. His passing ability will constantly be put on display as the season goes on.

The criticisms of JD were all wishful thinking by opposing fans. It’s the highlight effect. Of course his dunks, are gonna be on YouTube before plays where he’s facilitating like a true point guard

One of the best things I saw our team do this past game was the smoothness of the transition - defense to offense. It was amazing to see. You all remember the days of Avery and the first year of Oats. It was painful to watch the transition game. It almost always ended with a turnover or missed layups. We looked like a real basketball team. Kudos to Oats for his coaching and recruiting.

quote:Totally agree. The transition offense was very fluid and smooth. And that’s a part of the game that’s almost completely coaching. Definitely helps having talented players to run it, but I would credit that to lots of hours in the gym and effective coaching. Awesome to see!
