Gonzaga is great and Timme strikes me as an especially bad matchup for us (especially at this point in Bediako’s development), but I think it is easy to get a bit carried away with them. They have lost 2 out of their last 9 games.

Obviously context matters and those two losses were to a great team and a potentially great team, but it’s not like they are some unbeatable juggernaut.

The box score for their game last night is very strange. Timme played 28 minutes and was 1-2 from the field and finished with 10 points (and was not in foul trouble). Even if Carleton packed it in, 1-2 from the field is strange. That’s clearly not happening on Saturday.

I may be wrong, but I kind of figured we'd try to put Gary on him as much as possible, and Bediako more on Holmgren. But, again, I really haven't watched Gonzaga.

They or the Refs will get our big men in foul trouble for sure . That’s how these games usually go for us.
We need to be hot from the 3s and make our FTs , play good defense to have a shot. Good news is , we can do that, we are capable. But will we?

Agree. And Gary is a tough defender. The problem with Gonzaga is that they play together so well. They run their offense so smoothly that it is hard to defend them period.

Yep. More importantly than who guards Timme is the need for good team defense with smooth and fluid helps and switches.

I think that's right - Gary will probably be our preferred option. Although I haven't watched a ton of Gonzaga either, so if Holmgren spends more time outside of the paint then I'm not sure we'd want Bediako following him around.

(I assume they don't just post both of them up at the same time, because that would hurt their spacing and lead to a lack of driving lanes, but again I haven't watched a ton of them).

But Gary, Bediako, Gurley, etc. will all have their moments guarding him. Bediako also presumably will get better and better at the team defense stuff that we will probably need in a game like this.

A lot of their offense is predicated on screens and cuts, so, we will have a lot of switches. I just hope we can stay out of early foul trouble.

These stats are somewhere (at least they are for the NBA), but we do switch a lot anyway. Although maybe less when Bediako is in the game. You could tell at the end of the Drake game that we wanted to switch absolutely everything, so we had Gurley, Gary, and 3 guards.

On a more general level, I think our defensive scheme is fairly advanced (maybe more so than the offense - Nate seems to know exactly what type of shots he wants us to get, but maybe sometimes runs out of ideas on how to get them?). We switch a ton and we do a lot of fairly advanced stuff on hedging screens when we don’t want to switch everything. I think Charlie Henry is pretty good at what he does, and we sort of forget about him because he basically doesn’t recruit.

You could make a good bullish case that we’ll improve a lot on defense as the season goes on because of guys simply getting more used to the scheme.

That sounds about right, before the Duke game they were getting overvalued because of the huge UCLA win but I'm guessing that brought the market down a little on them

Brittany Davis Shining in Her Return to Action for Alabama Women's Basketball

Senior guard Brittany Davis has been on a long journey, and she is back in a big way for the Crimson Tide.

Only thing I said wrong was going undefeated through Memphis. I forgot you guys all predicted the Iona loss, silly me. I love the pettiness, but at least come correct.

If we are going to beat Gonzaga we will have to play a really good game defensively. Bediako needs a couple blocks, and we need to force some turnovers out top too.
