Ill preface this by saying, I watched about half the Duke/Gonzaga game and that's all I've seen of them. But, other than Holmgren, Gonzaga doesn't scare me talent-wise. I think we can match up with them on that. But, they're obviously very well coached and execute. We're going to need to get hot and stay hot. And, more importantly, stay out of foul trouble.
Biggest concern is Chuck and/or Gurley get in foul trouble early. I think if we can stay out of foul trouble inside we can make it a game in the 2H. And have to keep the hot shooting from outside going.

I said I watched about a half a game. I have no idea who that is, but whoever it is didn't jump out in the time I watched. AND, as I said, I'm talking strictly about talent, not what any of the players have accomplished in the system. Like, I said, we'll have to get hot to have a chance.

Considering it's Gonzaga and our first real road game of the year, I feel we will struggle. I know their home gym is in Spokane but it is in Seattle. We will have to shoot like we did in the Miami 2nd half to win. You can expect a lot of foul trouble from our bigs. We will really have to work on handling lane cuts this week. Bediako will have to stay under control and try to not get into a pissing match with Holmgren. We don't need him to foul out.
It will help us in the long run to play the game though. Need the challenge and experience.

They all scare me. There’s very, very few teams in the country that have a legitimate shot to beat us by 20 points, and this is one of them. That said, it will be a great test of our defense and benefit us come tourney time. These next 3 games over a short time period will feel like an NCAA tournament stretch of games, and should benefit us in March. We need to win at least 1 and hopefully 2. If we can get our fundamentals on both sides of the ball ironed out in the next 3 weeks, we should have a legit shot of winning the SEC again. Then it will come down to what team has the fundamentals and talent, but also gets hot the last two weeks of March. That’s anybody’s guess at this point, but we need to keep improving to be one of the teams to have that shot to get hot at the right time.
The Braves didn’t play well against the Dodgers in the regular season, but we all know what happened in October! We don’t need to win this game, but we need to compete and learn from it (but I’ll take the win if we pull it off!!).

Chet strikes me as a guy who can have games where he just kind of is in the background - at least in terms of scoring and touching the ball. However, every game he plays in he is a major factor on the offensive glass and in terms of blocking shots. If we aren't able to get out in transition we are going to struggle to run our offense, because we won't have any available shots at the rim with him in the game (not to mention Timme). I have to imagine that our plan for that one is going to be to run, run, run, run and run some more, even if it's a little out of control. Once things settle into the half court, it's gonna be really hard for us to get good flow with a no fly zone inside 6 feet.
It's a really tough ask. Much like the football game, we're going to have to play a high level, complete and mistake free game to have a shot to win.

It's definitely going to be tough because it's exactly what Gonzaga wants to do too. They have a very effective half court offense but would prefer to run and are very good at it.
We average 76 possessions per game and they average 74.2.
We average 84 points/game and they average 90.
Even with Holmgren, they will still run. He's not the typical center.
I actually wish we had one game this week prior to the game Saturday. Would like us to stay sharp coming off our great second half against Miami.

The more I watched Gonzaga the more I was praying we get hot from 3. I wanna see us come out like last year @LSU where we won 105-75 with a record # of 3s.

I want to see that JD/JQ/Shack/Keon/Miles lineup more. Really opens up driving lanes and makes us explosive in transition. Can’t run it too often for obvious reasons, but when we’re needing a spark that lineup is instant offense.

So we just gonna concede 2 points every possession?

I just want to see us moving the ball, driving and kicking, for some good looks.

Yea, there is no ideal situation against them due to their talent and roster. I think we'd much rather do what we do at our best and do it against a defense that isn't set up with an athletic 7 footer eraser than slowing it down.
They're good going fast or average. We're pretty much at our best going fast, and in terms of matchups I think it definitely serves us best.

quote:I guess when I said obvious reason I should’ve clarified for the slower members on the board. I’m not vying for that lineup to see heavy minutes, but I’d love to see it in spurts off the bench. I think JD plays best in space with bigs drawn to the perimeter.
So we just gonna concede 2 points every possession?

Someone claiming Bama should be favored over everyone on their schedule really doesn’t have the cachet to call other board members slow.

Not because I guarantee we’ll win but we’ll be huge underdogs against the Gonzaga’s of world and I like the value of the ML we’ll have. You’re having to make things up to defend the guy who criticized Oats for picking Bediako over Langston Wilson.

Gonzaga with a 28-27 lead over Tarleton St early 2nd half. Only led by 1 at the half.

49-47 Zags under 6 minutes to go.

Zags end up winning 64-55.
At least they're susceptible to a game like we've been: 16 TO, 4/19 of 3pt shots and 14/24 from the FT line.
What worries me most about them was how they played Texas. 100% committed to playing through Timme every single possession until they got a comfortable lead.
As annoying as his antics can be, the guy is a true throwback post player with near perfect footwork in the paint. Texas had no shortage of athletes but none could defend him in the post. Either he scored or was fouled almost every touch. Seemed like when the Dad comes in and schools all the young skywalkers at the REC center with his Kevin McHale post moves.
Zags went to him probably 18 of their first 20 possessions and forced Texas to start doubling which just opened the floodgates.
I could be totally wrong -- I didn't see a second of the Tarleton St game, but I'd guess Tarleton packed the paint like sardines and dared Gonzaga to shoot 3s and got a bit lucky they were ice cold and Zags turned it over a lot trying to force the ball inside/drive anyway. Much like we've been prone to do.
I'd be shocked if Oats changed everything we do to play the Zags that way.
Like many of you have said, we'll rise or fall on how well a rotation of Bediako, Gary, Gurley ect can slow Timme down and hit a decent % of threes on the other end to outscore them.
