We are 5th in the country in adjusted defense, if thats “average” then ok I guess.

I think what the SQ data is telling us is despite opponents not shooting well against us, we are giving up a lot of good looks.
Posted on 1/30/23 at 1:22 pm to RTN
Makes sense, shooting is down in the Sec this year, not many good shooting teams. We did hold mizzou to about 10% shooting from three( 3 for 28) and they are a good shooting team.

If you listen to Oats’ Mizzou postgame interview, I don’t think he would agree with your statement that our defense “held” them. He basically admitted we were very fortunate that they missed a bunch of wide open shots they normally make. Our adjusted defense metric is inflated due to a lot of teams missing wide open shots against us, which is why our shot quality metrics show we are barely above the 50% line.

There are way too many Debbie Downers here. The team had 2 loses already we weren’t going to win out the rest of the season. My prediction is we lose two more during the regular season. Auburn and Tennessee on the road. Even if that happens we could still lock up a one seed by winning the sec tournament.
That depends on how other teams in the top 10 end up. I don't see Alabama a No. 1 seed with losses to AU and Tenn; however I expect more upcoming losses than that.
The problems exposed by Miss State and OU will might continue to be a problem in future games unless coach can find a way to correct them.

Well hopefully we can continue to luck our way into being top 5 in adjusted D the rest of the season like we have so far.

Isn't it great though guys to go from needing a literal last second layup in the SECT in 2018 from Sexton just to get in the NCAAT to arguing over whether we should be a 1 or 2 seed?
Posted on 1/30/23 at 2:21 pm to CrimsonFever
Lol…up vote for you
There may be something to the fact that we don’t turn people over as much as others and I’m not sure shot quality can determine how closely contested a shot was. So our defense may be a bit better than shot quality is giving us credit for, but I definitely think we’ve been pretty fortunate to get some opponent’s poor shooting on open looks.

Apparently not reading this thread.

If we needed a wake up loss, which it looks like it did, I’m glad it happened in the challenge and not in SEC play.

I think the Shot Quality ratings of our offense and defense are probably more in line with where we are than the advanced metrics that have us in the Top 5.
2023
#2 adjusted offensive SQ
#38 adjusted defensive SQ
2022
#4 adjusted offensive SQ
#78 adjusted defensive SQ
2021
#7 adjusted offensive SQ
#20 adjusted defensive SQ
That all feels about right. We are above average defensively (even pretty good), but we aren't an elite defensive team. Certainly better than last year by a mile, but not quite as good as 2021.
I think the flip side is accurate, too, regarding offense.

No. 4/5 Alabama Returns to SEC Play Against Vanderbilt
No. 4/5 Alabama men's basketball faces Vanderbilt at Coleman Coliseum on Monday (7:30 p.m. CT) as the Crimson Tide look to bounce back in its return to Southeastern Conference play. The Tide are off to one of their best starts in SEC play in program history, as the Tide looks to improve to 9-0 for the second time under Head Coach Nate Oats and second time since the 1956-66 season (Alabama finished the year with a perfect 14-0 record).
Over recent history the Commodores and Crimson Tide have played close ball games, with the last five contests (Alabama leads 3-2) decided by an average of 6.4 points. Alabama's Brandon Miller continues his historic season as the freshman is the only Division I player to score 400 points, record 170 rebounds and make 65 three-pointers this season.
The Broadcast
Tuesday's game is set for a 7:30 p.m. CT tipoff and will be aired on the SEC Network with Mike Morgan (play-by-play), Daymeon Fishback (analyst) and Alyssa Lang (sideline) on the call.
The radio broadcast can be heard on the Crimson Tide Sports Network with Chris Stewart (play-by-play), Bryan Passink (analyst) and Roger Hoover (sideline) on the call, while Tom Stipe (engineer) is turning the dials. The pregame show will begin one hour prior to tipoff.

Honestly surprised 2021 wasn’t higher than 20.
It seems the adjusted SQ gives us more credit than the Power 6 chart Chad posted. Not sure if that is due to the teams we’ve played, or if #38 is close to the average when you filter for just Power 6 teams (I assume most of the top 37 are going to be power 6 teams, but there will be a few that aren’t). #38 feels decent vs 300+ teams, but if we’re around #30 out 70ish Power 6 teams on adjusted SQ defense, then it’s really a little above average.

Yeah that's a great point. I'm not complaining overall but that was an ugly, ugly, ugly loss. Hopefully it was just an anomaly but getting worked over by a totally mediocre OU squad coming off an ugly squeaker against State is a bit of cause for some alarm.

I mean, it has us rated behind Missouri. I've watched Mizzou play multiple occasions and they are not a good defensive team. Their only redeeming defensive quality is causing turnovers, and that doesn't even play into this.
So, definitely a grain of salt.

I'm assuming Robbins is still out for Vanderbilt?

Damn. Knew it was bad but we let a pretty average offensive team obliterate us. Just a complete disaster on defense Saturday.
