I said this earlier but I honestly think refs were so surprised that Smith could not finish ANYTHING at the rim that they just assumed we HAD to be fouling him.

Wonder what the final count was on fouls he drew? I know he was 3-15 shooting free throws which is really just unbelievable.

Bradley gets more comfortable with Sears/Miller every minute he's on the floor. The possession late when they had cut it to 9 and we ran the shot clock down to about 9.......Bradley drove with the intention to get Miller's defender to just slightly collapse and immediately kick to him.........leading to Miller catching an in rhythm pass to drain a 3 and end the game. That shite was beautiful.

Bradley is growing up quickly now that he has adjusted to the game speed. It felt like he was pressing early in the year thinking he had to play faster than he actually had to, but now that he's found his comfort zone he's looking like the kind of floor general that can really make an offense go.

One big surprise for me has been Miller’s rebounding, I knew he was a great scorer in HS and thought that would translate but he is 19th nationally in rebounds per game, I didnt expect that.

Clowney is 20th nationally in rebounds per game.

I’m starting to think the JQ we got at the end of the SEC Championship season was the exception and not the real him

You guys know how much I was criticizing Oats playing of JQ earlier in the season, especially against elite defenses, but at some point it just becomes piling on. You could tell JQ was pressing by the way he was reacting to the refs yesterday. He’s frustrated with his play, he really does seem to be trying his best when he’s on the floor (which hasn’t always been the case), and I thought Oats played him the right amount of time in the right spots yesterday.

Heck, a couple people commented about shot selection despite JQ going 2-4 from 3 and one of those was at a crucial time in the game (I agree that he has struggled with shot selection at times and we can all tell he is trying to do too much rather than let the game come to him). He wasn’t great but he made some good plays, at least 1 bad call went against him, he shot 50% from 3s including a big momentum stopper when MSU was making a run, but he had too many TOs again. He also knocked the ball away twice defensively, I believe. Given the 2 big 3s while everyone else was struggling shooting (until Miller started hitting), I think JQ was neutral to positive last night for us. That’s a big statement from me, but I think his 3 point shooting actually became contagious down the stretch. I love that he is not sulking and coming in trying to compete! I just hope he lets the game come to him a bit more and stops pressing so much.

Note: When JQ hit his 2nd 3, they had cut the lead from 13 down to 10 and we hadn’t scored in 3 full minutes of game time. (Pringle’s dunk at 13:39 to JQs 3 at 10:38).

I like Sears a lot. He is shooting 42% from three and has hit some timely late-game clutch ones too.

As far as our MVP's so far I would rank them

1. Miller
2. Clowney
3. Sears
4. Bradley
5. Burnett

Other than Miller being slightly ahead of the rest, I’m not sure you can separate Sears, Clowney, and JB by a whole lot. Especially if you look at performances against specific teams like Houston, both MSUs, UNC, etc. Honestly, the whole team has really contributed a lot at various points. Even Gurley’s clutch free throws were big in one to two of our wins.

It’s been a really good team effort so far and that’s what gives us confidence that we can win any game, even if one of the stars has an off game. We’ve already demonstrated that we can win without Miller being on and we can lose when he’s having a career night. This truly is a win as a team, lose as a team group of players and I love to see that!

I think Clowney has been by far our second-best player despite not being close to 100% for the last few games.

He has a bad butt bruise then got sick and lost a few pounds. He still played great last night despite that.

Pringle is coming along nicely too. He has been giving us some valuable minutes. Good surprise.

In the sense of two way impact, I agree. Sears is more veteran savvy and high IQ than actual talent on defense. Clowney is already a high level defender and most of his failures on that end are very coachable things that he should be able to fix as he gains more experience. In terms of physical ability and attitude he's a future DPOY candidate if he stays in college for another year or two.

That said, if the game is on the line I don't want anyone other than Miller or Sears taking the shot at this point.

True. Sears has been very valuable as well no doubt.

I agree if it's a three. If need someone to drive it in and either score to tie/win it or kick it out to a shooter for an open shot then Id probably most want it in Bradley's hands.

You got downvoted to hell but I agree. It's unfortunate to say considering how great he was a couple of years ago but last year he was exposed a bit more and is now coming off a major injury. If he can start limiting his turnovers and just hit his open shots then he could be a real asset off the bench but that's kind of the best-case scenario at this point. When you can't play defense, have poor shot selection and can't hit those shots, and then turn the ball over at an insane rate it gets harder and harder to justify playing time. Will be eager to see how his minutes come once Welch is a full go and we get Burnett back.

JQ will get there and people still have to understand that he didn't have the luxury to gel with them overseas or fully practice with them until end of October.

He's playing hard but like some have said JQ is pressing a lot.

I think he needs to understand that too.

He is trying to hit the ground running 1000 mph and trying to do all the things he did before he was injured on day 1 of returning, and that's not how it works, it will take him some time to get back in the flow of things.

I think he will be fine later in the year, at least Oats is recognizing that JQ doesn't have it yet and isn't playing him 20-30 minutes a game anymore.

I can’t stop thinking about how ridiculous the foul call on the floor was on Griffen’s breakaway layup. His feet were off the ground when his arm got hacked and the ref was standing right there.

Does he even know how to dial it back? That seems to be part of the problem. Even before he got hurt he always had a tendency to walk the fine line between aggressive and chaotic, frequently dipping into chaotic for stretches. Now with the knee not being 100% he's unable to stay on the tightrope and it's almost always chaos when he has the ball.
