The Five Most Impactful Freshmen in Men’s College Basketball So Far

quote:

Recruiting rankings mostly go out the window as soon as the ball is tipped in November, but this year has seen even more variance than usual in terms of men’s college basketball’s most impactful freshmen compared to the consensus during high school. That said, even in the transfer portal age, with more experienced players always available, several freshmen have made huge contributions immediately on their new teams in the season’s first six weeks. Here’s a look at the most impactful ones in the sport so far.

1. Brandon Miller, Alabama
SI99 high school rank: No. 18
Stats: 18.5 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 2.0 apg, 43.7% 3FG%

The most productive freshman in the country, Miller is the leading scorer and best player on a top-five Alabama team fresh off a huge road win at Houston. He possesses the rare combination of size and shooting ability that NBA teams covet and has proved tough enough to battle for rebounds despite a slender frame.

Teams have found success slowing down Miller when they’ve been able to get into his body defensively, and the talented 20-year-old has struggled at times to get to the rim and score that way. Miller followed up a quiet day in that Houston upset win with one of his best performances of the season Tuesday against a good Memphis team, pouring in 24 points (21 of those in the second half) and adding eight rebounds and five assists while shooting an efficient 7-for-13 from the field. He’s dealing with being the focal point of opposing scouting reports as a freshman against a tough schedule and finding ways to produce at a high level, and he’ll be in the All-American conversation should the Tide stay among the best teams in the country.

They didn't even put Clowney in the honorable mention list. He's been incredible.

True. They only listed 10 guys but I think Clowney should be in the top 10 personally.

Going by actual on-the-court production from freshmen so far Clowney is top 5.

He should be top 5 too.

He's averaging almost 10 ppg and about 8.5 rpg. If he didn't have the one game where he got hurt after 3 mins, his numbers would be closer to 12 and 10. Amazing.

Didnt we go to Seattle and beat them last year despite the time zone? Sounds like they're getting their excuses ready early.

It doesn’t work the same way going east to west. Alabama played them at 5pm Pacific, which was 7pm Alabama time. Unless you’ve got a really late tip, an eastern team on the west coast is going to be in it’s normal daytime cycle. Going the other way, a noon tip feels like they should be finishing breakfast instead of tipping/kicking off.

Some are pretty CONFIDENT on that message board I see...

Actually I was surprised by how many had them losing to us. I would equate it to our Football score prediction thread. Very few have us losing any game. When I read the thread it was about 50/50 having us beating the Zags and several by double digits.

Alabama vs Gonzaga 2022 C.M. Newton Classic Prediction
Even with this contest essentially being an Alabama home game in Birmingham, Gonzaga is a team that is certainly good enough to come across the country and beat the Crimson Tide in a tough road environment. Expect this contest to be close throughout, but I have Alabama pulling away late to win by a small margin. Prediction: Alabama 76, Gonzaga 72

I get your analysis.
Does anyone have some sort of statistics that proves or disproves the theory with West coast NFL teams playing 1 pM Eastern Time games on the East Coast? Like, do they average more turnovers on 1PM games than they do on 4PM games, etc?

Clowney is definitely top 5 easily.

I think the fans on that board know that Gonzaga does not match up well with us.

They have talent and Gonzaga can beat us if we don't DEFEND & REBOUND like we have been.

All of the freshmen have been really good, but Clowney has been a consistent almost double/ double night in and night out. Winning the hard hat against Houston and Memphis says a lot for Clowney.

Not a home games any more than Seattle was for the Zags last year. Problem with that "home game" idea is that we've been losing the Birmingham game regularly for several years (excluding Samford a few years ago).

This season is about exorcising demons from the past. Winning in Birmingham is a big one to scratch off the list.

CBS story that looks at playoff teams

Gambling site looking at performance vs the spread

The CBS one talks about the sleep cycle disruption leading to slow starts for a noon kickoff.

If we lose to Gonzaga then end up a 1-seed playing a 16-seed in Birmingham, I’m gonna have nightmares

It may have been discussed here, but I didn't see it. Passink was on the Blue Ribbon Report podcast a couple of days ago. Apparently, Nimari broke his wrist during the Houston game, but didn't tell anyone it was hurt because he wanted to stay in. It kept bothering him so they checked it later and they found the break.

That at least seems like good news in that it must not have been a terrible fracture.
