I'll call a spade a spade but 2023-2024 season has been better than I anticipated after the first few games of the season. I just hope they win their NCAAT opener and give the 4 or 5 seed a helluva game.

I can't help but think the constant harping on the defense has hurt us. The defense is what it is. I don't think most of our guys, the veterans anyway, are going to suddenly be better defenders. Our guards are small and unathletic, and we don't have a post defender

I'm in the group that's trying to be positive about what's been a better season that I was expecting, one that's lead to 4/5 tourney seed.

Like you point out -- guards aren't that quick and no real rim protector so the defense was never going to be that great.

I can also understand that Oats is a "system coach" and not a "tinkerer" that comes up with all kinds of different defenses.

I appreciate that he just teaches and runs his system on offense and defense and overall you can't really argue with the results.

In the big picture, Oats did a fantastic building this roster without a coaching staff in place from last season but it's certainly flawed.

I feel good about matching up with most 12-13 seeds as we've pretty good against those type teams this year.

To beat any good teams in the tourney, we're going to have to just create and also convert more good looks than we're giving up. Never had the impression that was happening against Florida after the first couple of minutes.

Florida's big problem for us is they are also very deep at guard/wing and our frontcourt is not particularly strong so we can't pound them like UGA who played them much better than us.

Not even Nate truly believes this. There's a reason he still talks about how much he loves this group and was pretty outspoken in his distaste for the 2021-22 group. Personnel is the biggest reason this group struggles so much defensively.

We didn't get out coached

This is just not true. Nate got out-coached (reference my previous post for 2 examples of how), and that's okay. And even with that under consideration, he's still done a top 5 coaching job this year based on the amount of player/staff turnover he's dealt with this year.

Florida left 18 points at the FT line. That's the only reason it was close despite them not being on their "A" game.

But your point is still valid: UF might be the worst matchup for us in the entire nation. Really unlucky to have them as our first matchup in the SECT.

But for the love of God can we please be a little better with our timeout usage during runs? I get that he doesn't like how TOs slow down possessions, but letting these runs go have put us in some huge holes that completely change the outlook of these games.

First I can remember him saying he might have made a mistake by not calling another TO during his press conference, but he didn’t sound overly convinced about it. When we’ve said it on this board for 4 years, it’s past time Oats self scouts and learns from it!! Hope it doesn’t take him 4 or 5 more painful losses before finally being fully convinced.

Still super glad we locked him up!

I could say it couldn't get much worse the last few weeks but we could still lose to Samford or McNeese so I'm going to pipe down for now.

Don’t know enough to make an informed opinion about matchups, but I don’t think we want any part of this as we’d have nothing to gain. Imagine the entertainment of Oats vs tPear though.

24% from 3 point range will cause Bama to lose most of their games. Plus I read where we were 0-4 on FT shooting to start the game. Sears was 0-2 and I think 23 was 0-2

What is it about Bama that makes this Florida team play their frickin asses off? Looked like shite against UGA and looking very beatable today against A&M.

They're just a horrible matchup for us. Much like Tennessee.

We were lucky to win 1 of 3 vs UF.

BAMA plays zero defense.

Vandy beat UF 2 weeks ago. Vandy.

EVERY team shoots 50% vs BAMA. This isn't about desire. It's lack of defense.

Stop pretending that UF will make it out of the 1st weekend of the tournament. They won't. It wouldn't shock me if they lost their opener.
Aggie is working them right now.

Bad matchup for us. Our strength is we have better Guards than our opponents….well they got Guards just as good as ours AND they have actual players inside. Bediako fricked us.

Some guys just have to convince themselves. This team is in a late season swoon. They are just not playing well. They nearly lost at home to an awful Arkansas squad.

This isn't the first time under Oats we've floundered in the end.
I was chastised when I pointed that out earlier.
But definitely this year we've faded.
I'm just about expecting a one and done for us. Perhaps we'll catch a team that can't hit all the wide open shot opportunities we'll provide them and we make it to the second round

Exactly yet some here are convinced it's about effort

The reality is we are asking these guys to do more than they can and Oats no matter how much we love him should have seen they can't defend head up and we needed to install a zone defense months ago.

Instead after every dismal defensive performance we made it about effort being too stubborn to adapt to the players we have.

Now every team has us figured out and this is why we have struggled against everyone since Wrightsell sat

UGA played zone. That suffocated Florida for a while. We don't. We just play the same man that people study film to beat and by the end of this season with no big man guarding the rim and poor guard on ball defense we are very easy to manage if you have talent.
