He's a high character guy!

I'm not letting you or anyone else talk negatively about him. That's what's wrong with the world today.

Negative Energy

Some folks don't always take a certain style of teaching like everybody else.

Some folks get frustrated with themselves a lot which affects their performance.

These guys are humans who make mistakes. Some of y'all are perfect though...

We literally just ran them down in the second half.

Agreed. When we decided tk start taking it to the basket it became pretty obvious we wanted it more.

Saw a technical called today for doing the too small hand gesture. Maybe there is hope.

Bama Central reporting:

quote:

Alabama Basketball Walk-On Kai Spears Offered Scholarship

The guard from Pittsburgh is in his second year with the program.

Alabama basketball sophomore guard Kai Spears may not be a walk-on for much longer. Spears was offered a scholarship on Thursday sources tell BamaCentral.

Spears is in his second year with the program. He has appeared in seven games this season with six total points. The guard made his first career field goal in the 111-67 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 23.

Coming into the season, Alabama only had 12 scholarship players (Kris Parker, Mark Sears, Grant Nelson, Rylan Griffen, Davin Cosby Jr., Mouhamed Dioubate, Mohamed Wague, Latrell Wrightsell Jr., Jarin Stevenson, Nick Pringle, Sam Walters and Aaron Estrada) on the team, which left one scholarship spot available. It is the second season in a row Alabama head coach Nate Oats left an open scholarship spot on the roster.

Senior forward Max Scharnowski and freshman Ward Harrell are the other two walk-ons currently on the Crimson Tide roster.

Spears went to Bishop Canevin high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is the son of Marshall athletic director Christian Spears. He did not appear in any games in his freshman season, so he has three full years of eligibility remaining.

That was my first thought - Nick is still listed on the roster tonight though.

The article said we only had 12 schollys and we are allowed 13. Apparently coach was holding out for someone that he did not get.

Tide Hoops History@BamaHistory
As a Friday double bonus, today is the birthday of the late C.M. Newton, who coached @AlabamaMBB from 1968-1980 and led the renaissance of the program in the 1970s. Born on Feb. 2, 1930, in Rockwood, Tenn., Newton spent a lifetime devoted to athletics and passed away at the age of 88 on June 4, 2018.

Newton played basketball and baseball at the University of Kentucky and won a national championship under legendary coach Adolph Rupp in 1951. Newton actually played minor league baseball in the New York Yankee farm system for a few years following his collegiate career.

Newton became a head basketball coach at Transylvania University, before a recommendation from Rupp to Paul “Bear” Bryant led to his hiring as the new head coach at Alabama. Newton recruited the first African-American player, Wendell Hudson, at Alabama and on Dec. 28, 1973, started the first all African-American lineup in SEC history with Leon Douglas, Charles Russell, Charles Cleveland, T.R. Dunn and Ray Odums.

Newton compiled a 211-123 record at Alabama and won three consecutive SEC championships (1974, 1975, 1976).

We have done that two years in a row. Last year Cosby took the open spot when he enrolled in January. I think it's more of a "just in case" thing at this point. I mean players 11-13 on your bench are typically not getting consistent minutes anyway unless there are a lot of injuries, and we have become a destination program for top recruits so building depth isn't an issue. Might as well hold it open in case you can get someone to enroll early or there's an 11th hour portal entry everyone wants but few have room for. If not, our walk-ons are awesome and hooking one of them up with a free year of school is a great fallback option.

Nate Oats on giving walk-on Kai Spears a scholarship: "Super happy for him, he's a great kid. He works really hard, he deserves it, as does Max. [...] Anytime we have a scholarship available and a great walk-on doing what he's supposed to, we're gonna reward him with it."

That's significant in terms of rotating bodies against Tolu Smith tomorrow.

If Grant gets in foul trouble we better hope our 3s are dropping. Pringle is a huge absence for this game.
