But we still gotta win at least 17-18 games for it to matter
If we go .500 the rest of our regular season schedule that would be 17 wins. We have 6 wins with 22 games left.
We should win over 20.

Another kicker is that right now the SEC looks like it might be messy and 13 wins could very well win the conference lol.

Dont go by the AP top 25 in basketball, it ranks teams by their number of wins and losses and thats about it. KenPom takes schedules into account, so does the net. We’re 9th on KenPom and 10th in the net and Clemson beat us so they do have a top 25 win. They also only have one loss and that was on the road vs #32 Memphis by two points, which isn't a bad loss, albeit worse than any of our losses.
I don’t understand how we are top 10 in either ranking. I get that our schedule has been tough but do neither of those ranking systems actually require you to win games? I truly don’t understand basketball rankings. Not complaining, but does anyone with eyes really think we are a top ten team in the country?

I mean, we've barely lost to two top ten teams.
Unlike football, basketball rankings don't reward a team for beating up on cupcakes.
Are we a top ten team? Probably not. But, we've haven't done anything to hurt ourselves much yet.

You don't understand basketball metrics, Ive tried my best to explain how they work in here, so have some other people.

You’re right, I don’t. On one hand people say don’t pay attention to polls and instead look at these computers but then simultaneously they’ll suggest that we are probably looking at a 9-11 seed in the tournament. If we are top ten we’d be a 3-4, right?

I’ll try to explain it simply
You cant just go by teams non conference records and decide who is better based on wins and losses. Out of conference Schedule strengths vary widely.
We have one quad 1 win and all four of our losses are quad 1 losses meaning they were all to good teams. Some teams that have better records than us may have no quad 1 wins and a quad 4 loss and be 9 and 1 and top 10 in the AP. Where as we would be ranked higher than them on ken pom because we have a better win that them and they have a worse loss than us even though their record would be 9 and 1 whereas we are 6 and 4.

If season ended today we are about a 5/6 seed

Also Auburn fans complaining about not being top 25 after winning a couple of Quad 3 games vs Indiana and USC is hysterical
Posted on 12/18/23 at 4:29 pm to CrimsonFever
Ok. So basically we will drop in these rankings as the season moves along and schedules start to normalize/equalize to some degree, unless we start winning some games.
Posted on 12/18/23 at 4:35 pm to Bham Bammer
We will be rewarded all season for playing hard teams in the out of conference. If we and Auburn both have the same level of SEC schedule and we played a much harder our of conference schedule than them for example it wont even out, we wouldve played a harder schedule still.
We could have easily made a schedule where we would be undefeated right now if wins and losses were what mattered most.
We dont have any bad losses. Auburn lost to App State, Kentucky lost to UNC Wilmington. Our worst loss is #25 Ohio State.

The committee would consider both the computer rankings and the games you actually won.
So, a team with computer numbers that equal 3 Seed but lost a lot a close games and has a record like most 9-10 Seeds may end up something like a 6 or 7 Seed.
The most basic thing to consider with the computer numbers is that losing a very close game to another Top10 team means the stats are almost identical for both teams.
So, for the computers, a 82-80 game means about the same for both teams.
Play a lot of other top teams very close and the computers reflect that your team is almost identical to those other top teams.

I guess as a fan I’d have a better feeling about this season if we had dropped a game we shouldn’t have and then also have wins over Clemson and Creighton and be sitting at 7-3 with those quality wins. But in that hypothetical scenario it sounds like we’d be lower in these rankings. Which seems kind of strange.

Seems like you still dont understand it. Beating Ceighton or Clemson would have us ranked higher, you get rewarded for beating good teams. You just really dont get hurt that much losing to good teams, especially if its away from home.
We have a quad 1 win too which is helping our ranking. And all the teams we have lost to are ranked high and all but one were away from home.

I said I guessed we’d be lower if we had won those two but dropped a game we shouldn’t have to a lower team (bad loss).

Yes you want to not have bad losses. Thats a main reason Arkansas is ranked 50 - 100 depending on where you look because they lost to #117 UNC Wilmington at home.
