Tide Hoops History@BamaHistory·56m
On this date in 1965, Harry Hammonds scored 32 points for @AlabamaMBB in a 93-79 victory at Southern Miss. Hammonds played for Tuscaloosa High School and opened the long-time local bar bearing his first name and serving “Crazy Buckets.” Hammonds died earlier this year on June 11.

Harry was one of the best high school basketball players I've ever seen. He and Tuscaloosa High School owned the state of Alabama back then in basketball, and throughout Coach Tom Tarleton's time there.
Hammond's was one-of-a-kind!

Some footnotes were added to the original post:
quote:

Some footnotes: In Harry's senior year at Tuscaloosa High School, the 1961 Black Bears were the undefeated state champions. They were coached by the legendary Tom Tarleton.

Harry's teammates included future Auburn standout Tim Pearson, future state legislator Tim Parker, Ernie Houck, and my future football & basketball coach at West End Christian Jim Riley.

That was the last undefeated AHSAA state basketball champion out of Tuscaloosa until Roosevelt Sanders duplicated the feat with Central High School on his way to back-to-back state championships(90 & 91). Future Bama player Shon Peck Love was part of that run.

Edey is just big. He'll not be some superstar at the next level there are plenty of folks that are big there and skilled.

He's a lot more then just big. For his size, he's got a very good touch. He would've already been a 1st round pick in another era of the NBA. But that's why he's still in college. He'll have a basketball career.

Most likely it'll be overseas. But if he managed to get on a an NBA roster, it would be for a very small, situation role.

I've got nothing against the guy. Though I think the refs do a shitty job calling his games. It's not like he's some douchebag like Hunter Dickenson.

If anything I just that the traditional center has become so devalued, that these guys hang and dominate around for four or five years, while when a young wing shows any potential, they're gone before you get to see them scratch the surface of their potential.

When you say traditional center do you mean a dude who is relatively slow and 90% of his game is post ups and rebounding? Because yeah that player archetype has zero value in the modern NBA. But if you're just talking about tall guys who defend, rebound, and live in the paint on offense there are tons of those in the NBA. They're mostly just freaky athletes who can run the floor, rotate on defense, and start the break off of a rebound. That's where Edey becomes a non-prospect. He's slow, not a playmaker, and he's mostly incapable of defending away from the basket. If he were athletic but just couldn't hit 3s someone would absolutely draft him.

So you are saying he is not draftable?

Probably not. Someone may take a shot at him towards the end of the draft, but he's definitely not the kind of player teams prioritize these days. Way too slow and unathletic. He would struggle horribly with NBA spacing and pace of play. Can you imagine him having to defend someone like Jokic or Embiid? It'd be brutal.

He’s 100% not draftable. Has zero NBA qualities other than being tall. Can’t dribble, can’t pass, can’t shoot, can’t move his feet or jump. Only semblance of skill is a decent hook shot.

Most mock draft have him goons in the 40 - 50 range, I think he will get drafted.

I spent lots and lots of nights at Harry's back in the day. LOL. Didn't know he had passed away this year.

Sometimes the hyperbole on this board just sounds like complete ignorance. If Edey “can’t shoot,” we would have won the game.

Someone on Twitter X said the Creighton game was a rivalry game. I said no way and he decided to argue with me that it was. His sorry arse may post on here but what say you most learned college BB fans.

Based on his picture he seemed to be in his late 20's

It's outright impossible to be rivals with a team you've played twice in your entire 111 year history.

I guess if the no call on Creighton fouling Releford at the end of the game constitutes a rivalry, then we have a whole heap of rivals - like Purdue with only three fouls called on Edey all game.

FYI - It’s a joke/not serious - see the Releford foul mention below. Also Joey Blackwell getting in on it:

Exactly. But they were first round picks 15-20 years ago, which is what i was saying. Now they feast for 4 years on college before moving overseas.
