For someone who has been a D1 and NBA HC for 35 years Cal has a shockingly bad coaching tree. He has literally never developed a single competent future HC. I don't know what that says about him, but you'd think by sheer dumb luck one of them would have had a little success.

The longest number of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances by @AlabamaMBB is six, starting in 1982 through 1987 under former Crimson Tide head coach @wimpsanderson1. During this impressive run, the Tide reached the Sweet Sixteen four times (1982, 1985, 1986, 1987), won two SEC Tournament titles (1982, 1987) and one SEC regular-season championship. In fact, over his 12-year career, Sanderson only missed the NCAA Tournament twice (1981, 1988) and added two more Sweet Sixteens (1990, 1991) and three consecutive SEC Tournament championships (1989, 1990, 1991) in such dominating fashion that state media members joked the conference tournament should be renamed the “Wimp Sanderson Invitational.” So Alabama’s six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances are here to remind you the 2023-24 basketball season tips off in six days.

Does any coach have a coaching tree worth mentioning? Assistants don't seem to get the pub that football coordinators get, so it's hard to know who anyone has coached under.

Yes. Tons of them. Most of the best coaches in history have learned the game from each other. Just as an example, you can draw a direct line from the birth of basketball to Roy Williams. James Naismith -> Phog Allen -> Dean Smith -> Roy Williams.

The great coaches who have a system typically have a very good coaching tree. Cal on the other hand has always been more of a recruiter focused on taking the best talent available and trying to work around the class he lands. This inevitably is a very poor model to follow for one of his assistants transitioning to head coach when they aren't working with nearly the same talent pool at a much smaller school.

After doing a little research, Larry Brown, Eddie Sutton, Rick Pitino, Dean Smith and Bob Knight definitely have impressive coaching trees. There's definitely some that have lengthy trees, but not as great results. It is interesting to me that they make such a big deal of who coached with who in football, but it is rarely as advertised in basketball.

In two days I will reveal my favorite childhood player and complete the @AlabamaMB trinity of my youth that already includes my most beloved team (1987) and coach (@wimpsanderson1). However, with five days remaining I wanted to spotlight one of my daughter’s favorite players. At the age of 4 almost 11 years ago, I started taking her to games and these last few seasons are the first time she’s finally been able to experience Alabama basketball like I did growing up. While recruited by former head coach Avery Johnson, Jaden Shackelford honored his commitment to the Crimson Tide when Nate Oats took over the program and he made the All-SEC freshman team in 2020. A year later, @jayunooo earned All-SEC second-team honors and played a pivotal role in Alabama’s return to basketball excellence by sweeping the SEC regular-season and tournament titles and earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. So one of my daughter’s favorite players, Jaden Shackelford, is here to remind you the 2023-24 basketball season tips off in five days.

For Knight, add Chris Beard.

Poppovich has an impressive tree including future Bama women's coach Becky Harmon.

Phil Jackson has a tragic coaching tree.

I'm taking my two sons to the opening night game on Monday. Would like some really good seats if anyone has any access to them.
