LINK ]3 freshmen among standouts from Tide's 2nd scrimmage | AL.com
quote:
Alabama had its second spring scrimmage Saturday.
While the media isn’t allowed to watch the scrimmage, here are some of the players who stood out based on information shared with AL.com:
?Tua Tagoviola - Quarterback
The five-star freshman from Hawaii had a second straight impressive scrimmage.
Tagovailoa threw at least three touchdowns Saturday, including a long one to freshman wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.
?Brian Robinson - Running Back
Some of Alabama’s other running backs being banged-up has created additional opportunities for Robinson, who continues to take advantage and make standout plays.
The four-star freshman from Tuscaloosa had two nice-sized gains Saturday against the Tide’s first-team defense.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Robinson is big, physical and impressing to the point that at least some at Alabama feel like he could see playing time as a freshman, even with as deep as the Tide is at running back.
?Robert Foster - Wide Receiver
After catching a long touchdown in Alabama’s first scrimmage, the redshirt senior made multiple big plays Saturday, including one that was shown in the Tide’s scrimmage highlight video.
Foster caught a pass on first-team cornerback Trevon Diggs, broke a tackle and gained additional yardage.
?Jerry Jeudy - Wide Receiver
The five-star freshman had the long touchdown catch-and-run, making a leaping catch over cornerback Levi Wallace before cutting back across the field and running the rest of the way for a touchdown.
?TJ Simmons - Wide Receiver
The sophomore from Clay-Chalkville had a second straight productive scrimmage after catching seven passes in Alabama’s first scrimmage.

So according to the hype machine, we should expect Tua to beat Jalen out for the QB job, and Najee and Robinson to be our go-to backs

I know you are being sarcastic but in all reality both Tua and Najee are the highest rated guys at their position that we have signed under Saban. Of course it would be a surprise to see any of them win starting jobs by fall camp but they both may rise up the ladder rather quickly and I wouldn't bet against either of them starting at some point in the season. Just last year everyone was saying how fascinated they were with Hurts but that there was no way Saban starts a true freshman at quarterback.

Having both of them as backups will allow the coaches more freedom with the starters and not worry about one of them getting hurt on a read option type play. Last year we had few options if our start QB went down. And a few years back with Henry had to carry the rock too many times

Yeah and Mosses and Buggs to be the defensive captains

I won't be surprised if Dylan Moses is the best linebacker on the team. He has elite NFL measurables but more importantly he is a tactitian. Saban loves the guy because he is a student of the game and understands how to play the position. Saban will bring greatness out of the kid.

I would totally bet against Tua starting a game this season barring injury.

Completely different situations.

Less cerebral but more physically imposing version of Mosley
Everything I've heard is that Moses is smart as hell and has a high football IQ as well.

I don't think Moses will start at LB this year but expect he will be a ST monster.

I wouldn't bet against Najee and Robinson in all seriousness - especially if Bo isn't fully himself or gets hurt.
At QB it's a whole different thing. Tua would have to look like Tom Brady in fall camp to unseat Jalen, and Saban doesn't switch QBs midsesson unless the starter is really struggling. (Which I guess could happen)
As far as Dylan Moses, I absolutely expect that he'll get meaningful snaps on defense this season. He'd be a terror coming off the edge against RPO QBs

One thing is certain. Having elite newcomers like this pushes the older guys to work harder to keep their job making the football team better for it.

This is probably the most important point to be gleaned from this entire conversation.

The running back situation is insanity.
We, from all serious reports, have 6 SEC caliber running backs on the roster right now that could play significant snaps and be good players at any school in the conference. Most of them could be elite. SIX.
If Robert Foster adds an above average season this offense will be stupidity. I won't truly believe it until I see it, but it is definitely there. He was on that track in 2015 before his injury, and he's probably 100% healthy and understands this is it. Would be an huge bonus.

This is the quietest spring practice I can remember since Saban fit here. Hardly any info out there

They should never spread spring practice out like this again. Taken almost 2 months to have 15 practices.
You just lose interest in it because it's so spread out. Get it done in 3 or 4 weeks.
I used to have 2 a days in spring practice when I was in high school.

Anyone know how Elliot Baker is doing? Haven't seen him with the first group of OL.
Posted on 4/17/17 at 6:21 pm to remaster916
He's running 3rd string. Apparently showed up out of shape so he may need spring and summer to get to the place physically where he can compete with some of the monsters we have out there. JUCO guys are like kickers, total crap shoot. Buggs looks like a home run and Elliot...not so much so far. We will see how he develops this summer and in fall practice I guess.

JuCo OL since James Carpenter have been so inconsistent...
