Obviously this is reading between the lines, but I was actually really surprised to hear this.

A reporter asked Saban, "Where do you feel like you addressed the greatest position of need in this year's class?"

Saban, without hesitation said "Quarterback. (...) We feel Bryce Young is a very talented player, and it's important that we bring him along from a development standpoint."

Wow..

Umm we have a returning fourth year junior with game experience, 2 sophomores, and he says the greatest position of need on the entire team was Quarterback, and starts lowkey gushing about Bryce Young?

If you can’t read between the lines, then you either don’t know Saban, or you’re “fricking stupid”

Nope. We'll have 1 RS-JR (Mac), 1 SO (Lia) & 1 RS-FR (Tyson) plus FR Young.

We have mac jones, paul tyson, and taulia.

Would you have said that the biggest place of need on our entire team was QB?
I was surprised by the answer

And furthermore, I think Bryce Young is the reason Saban told Tua to go to the NFL. It’s clear the staff is sky high on BYoung and considers him as the crown jewel of the class

Nope. Saban didn't say that either. He was talking about a big recruiting class need (QB) that was met very well, with Young, the #1-ranked QB and #2-ranked overall player in the 2020 class. Young has great QB skills, acumen, and intangibles. Saban essentially said it's important to develop him -- get him prepared to play.

Umm, to my knowledge, prior to Bryce Young's enrollment, we had a grand total of 1 QB we knew we could win with. One. And so, yeah - QB was a HUGE position of need.

I mean, in the modern game, that position is only the most important position on the field. No biggie.

Yea - signing an elite QB is a position of need at LEAST every 2 years. Our last elite QB signing was Tua. Signing Bryce was a HUGE deal.

None of that means Saban is already thinking he is going to start him at QB in 2020, though.

Saban is at least considering the possibility, and it’s clear he loves talking about Bryce Young. If you can read people at all, you can tell he gets a warm feeling and starts smiling when talking about Bryce Young. He’s super high on the kid. I’m sure Sark is too. He’s the highest rated QB Saban has ever signed.
He’s the first thing he brings up when asked about the class.
People act like this is some outlandish prediction.
“Oh my god you think the best dual-threat high school QB in the country can just walk in and start as a freshman over a returning 3-star!?”
Yes, I do. And many other people do as well - including Saban.

Saban was talking about the recruiting class, and nothing more. QB is always a position of need, especially with the pace of transfers these days.

We have 1 QB that currently has the skills to play the position well, and that's Mac Jones. Behind him are Lia and Tyson. Hard to say how good they are since we rarely see them, but they haven't really impressed in the few times we have been able to see them.

That is not enough QBs, thus it was the greatest position of need.

It's be nice if Young was so good that he beat out Mac Jones, and maybe it does happen. But I believe it's pretty foolish to believe Saban thinks it's going to happen before the kid even sets foot on a field and does even basic competition, spent much time on the playbook, etc. For all we know, he could turn out to be Blake Barnett v2.

Btw, we've had pretty good seasons with QBs like Mac Jones. We don't need crazy QB play to win. I'm excited to see what the offense can do next year. Najee is a beast that many in the fan base have not been fair too over the years, and we have weapons at WR. On top of that, we have an OL returning the majority and a QB who stands in the pocket and delivers the ball.

But if he gets hurt, shite goes downhill quick. Thus again, QB is a position of need.

Get your money out big man. I’d bet on that.

Idk why you’re such a pissy bitch. Are you alone on valentines day? Can’t get a girlfriend? Christ

Btw I wasn’t late to the Bryce Young hype train. I’m the fricking conductor. Get on board bitch

Mack Jones is starting next year and playing every meaningful snap and he deserves it.

I think Mac will play well and I think he'll be the year long starter, but the Jalen/Tua competition proved that sometimes the returning starter isn't always the best player, even if the returning starter was SEC offensive player of the year the previous season. I remember some people proclaiming that Tua would never start while Jalen was still at Alabama.

I just hope he sticks if he doesn't start vs. USC.

I’m bookmarking these. After Bryce Young lights it up in game one, I’m damn sure linking back to this thread

Go ahead. It'll still be true that it's not what Saban was saying with what you've quoted.

Are you telling me that Saban isn’t excited about this kid and his potential to start as a freshman, and that he sees Bryce Young only in the capacity of providing depth behind Mac Jones?

If that’s what you people are saying, then you’re the stupid ones here.
Unlike y’all, Saban isn’t an idiot. He saw Trevor Lawrence as a freshman, he saw Tua as a freshman, he saw Jake Fromm as a freshman rip his defense to shreds.
If you don’t think Saban is thinking Bryce Young could be a guy like that, you don’t get it.
