yea I can see that but there's also no upside in kicking him off. Zero.

I'd argue that Oats has done that several times over the last few years. Once a player kinda realizes they aren't playing big minutes immediately, he doesn't even bother playing them to save their redshirt even if their 5-10 minutes a night wouldn't be useless.

It's 2026. Redshirting players is doing their next employer a favor, not you. However I imagine Oats does this to be considered a friendly coach to all these player agents. I don't know...

Yes I agree if they’re out of the rotation because they aren’t good.

But a player choosing to sit out over NiL while still traveling with the team and attending games with the team I can’t see. He appreciates team culture too much to just let him hang out on the bench because of NiL

Sure. I am not sure it is explicitly that but all these people have helicopter parents who now have agents feeding them all the things they want to hear and have their own doctors to caution playing for maybe less than serious reasons.

Bristow may not even realize that he's going to be in the portal in a few months right now but I bet "his camp" all knows that. Nobody can even explain what is keeping his playing by my research.

He is doing the right thing for the player . Especially transfers who only have 1-2 years , No need to waste a year

Right. It's just a nonsense rumor. I mean Bill Self is very clearly fed the frick up with Darryn Peterson's bullshite and he's only partially refusing to play. No way in hell Oats is tolerating a fricking bench player with no NBA future refusing to play at all over his NIL compensation. You have to kick that player off the team.

If you think its because he wants more money from us, you’re not considering someone saw him play against Illinois and contacted his camp then the next thing he knows his doctors are worried about something he was fine playing through.

It is bizarre because you can see him around in practice tape that gets out or even doing shoot arounds then doesn’t dress.

I want to know when is TBB going to be back to 100%. He should be starting at the 4.

I miss Grant Nelson!

If his reason for not playing is a personal doctor telling him not to then it makes no sense that he's being allowed to practice. I can buy that he is actually hurt and it's limiting enough that even though he can still technically play he doesn't want to burn a year of eligibility to play 20 games at way less than 100%. I can buy that even though he could probably help us he doesn't want to burn a year of eligibility as the 8th or 9th guy in our rotation. I can buy that he decided that this just isn't a good fit and he doesn't want to get hurt since he's definitely hitting the portal after the season. And honestly I don't entirely disagree if you find all those reasons to be bullshite. It's justifiable to an extent. I just completely reject the notion that he is refusing to play because of an NIL dispute even though he is not only still with the team, but wants to and is being allowed to practice with the team. That's just fricking nonsense.

The Patriot League is obviously a big step down from the SEC, but it's still D1 basketball and he was their POTY last season. It would be completely understandable if he was just an average bench quality player at this level, but he's essentially a walk-on in terms of contributions. I don't think a single coach anywhere in the country would watch any D1 conference's POTY and come away with the impression that he can barely play basketball.

All this. And go back and watch analysis videos from after he entered the portal and committed. A bunch of people thought he was a top 2-3 big man in the portal. He was the #39 transfer on on3 and #4 C. Him being this shitty is actually pretty shocking.

I just don’t understand Oats saying he is hurt and then everytime we tweet out these night before the game Practice videos he is in the scout team going full speed.

It’s gotta be NIL because he played well enough to be a contributor and gets minutes(even if he couldn’t make layups)

I think what is happening is harder for Oats to be direct about. I think the family/agency doctors are not clearing him to play and UA is sorta stuck between a rock and a hard place in that respect. I do think ultimately it is an NIL play but it is because his next employer wants his 3 years of eligibility. However, he may be out of the loop making those calls. He's just aware that his doctors are saying, "you can't play basketball."

I’ll eat crow if I’m wrong but I think there is no chance he plays another minute in a crimson tide uniform. He’s already gone and may not even realize it.

Seems the best thing fans can do is just take Oats at his word and assume it may be an injury/health issue similar to Mallette last year.

Could possibly play but not 100% so probably better for the player to redshirt.

I am taking Oats word about it. Whenever a coach starts saying things about the player’s “camp” then you need to realize that the decisions are being made outside our facility or our medical team.

You can redshirt if you play a certain percentage of the season in a certain part of the season (generally speaking the first OOC part) I believe.

Not the case for basketball. They updated the rules for football a while back but other sports, like basketball, don't let you play any regular season competition and redshirt.

I guess that’s why our freshmen get a physical with a level of detail an octogenarian doesn’t even receive.

I'm about to turn 40. I wonder if I can schedule a heart stress test with UA. I trust they will give me the information I need if it looks bad more than my local heart center
