People need to realize that 24/7 cable news networks and social media platforms have a vested interest in making sure every somewhat noteworthy negative event becomes a cataclysmic, watershed crisis. It’s just good business.

I'm looking forward to this "defund the police" movement sweeping heavy blue areas. That will result in another conservative movement like we had during the Raegan years.
ETA: This may be the dumbest thing Democrats have done in decades.

The black protestors interviewed sound totally level headed and looking to start a rapport with the police.
Every white liberal interviewed sounds like a complete psycho. Totally unhinged. Not only that, but they completely ruined what the black group was there to do: talk to the police. They caused such a scene that the police couldn't be a part of that because they were dealing with the white nutjobs.
I think we're going to find that this white savior complex is having the opposite effect of what they intend, at least with people who will likely vote.

The NYPD has 36,000 sworn officers. It will take a lot more than 800 to have that kind of impact.

I don't know about Hoover Alabama but in the news coverage I have seen of events across the nation the actual protestors are mostly justified blacks, and those destroying and burning property are more often white. I suspect Antifa is a huge segment of those losers, and it undermines the legitimate protests.

But as for dismantling police departments, which Minneapolis is supposedly considering, that seems crazy.I have tried to find more info on it as to how this new "public safety" department would work but haven't found anything. Seems like an open invitation to criminals. I don't think an Andy and Barney police department would work these days, especially in a large city.

There has not been any reported looting or property damage in Hoover since this started. I was at the protest in Hoover yesterday. I'd estimate it was 60-40 black to white, and it was peaceful and well organized while I was there. We left as soon as it was over, so can't comment on what might have happened afterwards, other than what's been reported.
As for defunding the police, I think that moniker is absolutely terrible. From what I've seen, the idea is to have a public safety department handling most of what police do, but I've so far only done some cursory reading on it. I will say I've done 2 citizen ride alongs with law enforcement. That's a ridiculously low sample size, but 90% of what I saw them doing seemed to be done out of boredom. On one, the guy got 3 calls the entire shift. The rest of the time he was just riding around looking for bad guys, or looking for a reason to pull someone over for minor traffic violations in the hopes it would net something more serious.

In practice it's just going to be a police department under a different name that re-hires most of the current officers under different titles. "Disbanding" the police department gives them cover for firing all of the people in command positions instead of wading through the river of bullshite that firing them individually would entail.

One would think that but the majority of that is shift commanders, and seasoned veterans. It’s 800-1000 today and likely more to come. Trust me that’s crippling.

American's chickens are coming home to roost with regards to how it handles things. For a long time, Statism fueled by debt-spending became the norm de jure.
Folks need to ask themselves what is the cause of most crimes: Typically it's two main sources----boys raised in single parent homes (where mom was a teen her self when she have birth typically) and prohibitions of victimless activities. The police resources are misallocated towards revenue raising activities while essential items go neglected: solving murder cases, rape test kits, etc.
In some areas, the primary duty of policing is to raise revenue via ticketing, etc.

Nashville is hardly a "heavy blue" area. The last guy ran on a "sanctuary city, Chicago-style" of governance and proceeded to lose in a blow-out. This isht might fly in Seattle or San Fran, but not here.
