This is not exactly true. I was a student at Bama for Coach Bryant’s last two years. There were limits of a total of 95 scholarships per year for a team. So, while back in the 1950s and 1960s, Coach Bryant did stockpile players, by 1981 and 1982, he couldn’t do that anymore.
In those years, Coach Bryant (1981 and 1982 seasons) would play the second team offense (all eleven guys) at seemingly random times. I got the sense it was about every third series the second team trotted out there. I could be wrong but that was my recollection.
Sometimes, CPB would substitute the entire second team backfield and pair them up with the first team O line. All I know is, he played a crap load of QBs/RBs/FBs. I seem to recall looking at 1982 Cotton Bowl game program, Bama had something like 15 players with at least 200 yards rushing for the season (?!?!?!).

Portal class is top 15. We can live with that. Top 15 portal classes to go with top 5 HS classes and we can still compete at the top.

Coach Bryant would take those high school QB's that were athletes and make DB's out of them like Wilcox Harris and Tucker and it worked out pretty well for him.
IMO we could play more people than we do, especially in these games where we get big leads. They won't get better riding the oak.
