Sorry for the off topic post but are there any bars in Monroeville? I heard there might be one opening next to the courthouse but haven't seen anything. Thanks

Monroe County, southwest part of the state. To Kill a Mockingbird's author is from there. I didn't think there was very much there.

My parents lived there for a couple years (long before I existed). They said Harper Lee was a bitch

I can't imagine the city allowing a bar to go up next to the courthouse though

The city has a 51/49 rule I believe (I'm from there). The rest of Monroe county is dry and the only way monroeville could get a wet law passed was with a 51/49 rule included. There are restaurants that serve alcohol and there are "private clubs" but you don't want to go to the clubs.

Radley's serves alcohol as does some Mexican restaurant I've never been to and I believe the pizza hut does as well. Not sure what you're looking for but you probably won't find it in that town. Go to the package store and throw a party

She's a hermit but I've never heard people refer to her as a bitch. I don't have any personal experience with her. I DO have two signed copies of her book though. :D

The literary rumor I've always heard is that Truman Capote wrote or "heavily edited" large amounts of To kill a mockingbird.
Just my opinion, after reading both authors I find the similarities in style compelling.

That was the rumor on why she became a hermit.

edit to keep on topic:
Is a 51/49 rule wat it sounds like?
Because it sounds like a big brother attempt to stop victimless drinking.

This was 30+ years ago. Apparently she could be pretty brutal back then. All the town had to talk about was whether or not she wrote the book.

That notion has been debunked, largely. That they were life-long friends (Capote is believed to be the inspiration for Dill) may explain those similarities in style.

Letter Puts End to Persistent 'Mockingbird' Rumor

Harper Lee's 'Mockingbird': Did she write it, or didn't she? - check out the postscript.

Oh, and she and Pat Dye are pen pals. You can't make up this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the info. We weren't looking for anything too crazy just a place to have some beers after hunting. We'll just stick to the camp house.

When I was in high school we used to drive into Monroeville and hang out with the MA, Excel and other high school kids. That was a lot of fun.

It means you can only serve alcohol in your restaurant if a majority of your revenue is from food sales. At least 51% of your sales has to be from food.

They do allow liquor stores though.

It's a dumb rule but still a huge step forward for Monroe County. I'm not sure I'd risk opening a bar there even if that rule wasn't on the books.

They still talk about this but almost everyone I know in Monroeville seems to believe she wrote it.

Sounds like an open market!
You could get first-mover benefits.

Nah. Every time I'm in a restaurant that sells alcohol in Monroeville I'm the only person drinking. And by "drinking" I mean I'm the only one not having sweet tea. Those establishments probably don't even remember the 51/49 rule because there's no way they're going to hit it. If there becomes enough of a desire for bars to open in Monroeville the 51/49 rule will go away.

if the town has more than 2000 people and is in a dry county they can petition the county for a ballot measure to allow alcohol sales within the city limits.

I'm aware. That's how Monroeville has alcohol sales.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Prop and Gavel on the square. Great restaurant and fun bar. The upstairs patio is really cool. I could definitely spend a lot of afternoons on that patio overlooking downtown.

I just found their facebook page. They close at 9:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. Seems about right for monroeville.
