On a happy note, the Oats coaching tree is having a good year. If Hodgy can win tomorrow, that’s 2 in the NCAAT and one that was a win away.

This is generally true, just not for this Bama team. We can’t hold them to less than 20+ in rebounding disadvantage and we don’t pressure the ball enough to get turnovers that would give us extra possessions without needing a rebound. We can’t exploit their weaknesses the way others can.
ETA: our 2023 Bama team would absolutely have a shot against this FL team, and maybe would be favored. 2026 Bama can’t rebound or defend
vandy is not a better rebounding team than bama. in fact i would argue vandy isnt a better team than bama, do you think they are? and you dont generally beat florida by pressuring the ball. its true that florida does a good job of masking their weaknesses with a ridiculous offensive rebounding rate but thats about it. i would go into further detail on this but i just realized im talking to a guy who just last week told me bamas A+ game would still only have a shot to beat floridas D+ game that even in their auburn loss has yet to occur, so clearly it would just be pointless and we should all bow down to the great haugh, condon, and chinyelu as they are clearly the second coming of bird, mchale, and fricking bill russell. fricking florida homers i swear

Vandy has a top 30 defense, top 10 offense, and just destroyed the undisputed best team in our conference.
Bama doesn’t even have a top 65 defense and just lost to a team that had played 2 more games in 2 days than us and had 4 SEC wins the entire regular season.
Vandy is top 30 in both offense and defense, which is often quoted as what’s required to be even in the conversation for a NC heading into the NCAAT. Do you look at any data prior to making claims?

I am somewhat mesmerized by Vanderbilt.... They consistently get outrebounded by double digits by most quality opponents, yet still can run away from you. Even when we played them, we outrebounded them by double figures (without Sherrell) and lost. In there past 3 wins (UF, Tenn, Tenn again) they have lost the boards very decisively in every game and still have won pretty easily.

Bama does in fact have a top 60 defense in the advanced metrics.

so youre claiming because vandy is currently 6 spots ahead of bama on kenpom that they are superior to bama? a vandy team with a 148 ncsos and only 2 less losses than bama. a vandy team who at home barely beat bama with no sherrell for the game or philon for the second half. a vandy team who plays an undersized backcourt the whole game, doesnt rebound, has no rim protector, and plays no one over 6'8. yes they did just destroy florida who's still currently 7 spots ahead of vandy on kenpom. can an obvious expert on the metrics like you explain this miracle to me? i ask because im sure it will also explain your other claim of how bamas best still cant beat floridas worst.

67th adjusted defensive efficiency according to Kenpom. We’re literally the only team in the top 30 to have a defensive rating worse than 60th.

lol…I literally said Vandy had the best chance of beating FL of anyone in the tourney prior to the games being played.
I can’t help you. You think you know basketball, but you constantly display basketball ignorance.

geez, that must have been from the Ole Make and UGA games. because our defense numbers had been below 60 and trending better.

Lunardi still has us as a 4 seed beating out Arkansas and St. John’s. It’s possible, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see either of those teams knock us to a 5 tonight.

The only thing that will make my Sunday better is watching the barn melt that they didn’t make it to the tournament.

Wish I could have seen the Vandy - UF game yesterday. Still puzzled looking at the box score at how it's even possible to have only a +6 TO margin along with -16 rebounds and still end up with the exact same amount of FG/FT attempts.
Statistically, in general, the wide range between Bama and Vandy in defensive stats seems mainly that they create turnovers a little above average whereas we are one of the very worst teams in Div 1.
That's really the criticism I have of coaching philosophy. We're usually undersized and guard dominant but that should allow us to create a few more turnovers. Oats actually talked about creating more turnovers in interviews before the season but we were probably worse this year than any other.

I was at the game live. Vandy couldn’t miss a shot, Florida was missing drop ins. Their rebounds are great but doesn’t help when you can’t score.

Agreed on the coaching philosophy. It sometimes feels like Nate is content to sit back and wait on another defensive savant like Herb to come along and make shite happen on that end purely on instinct. That's just not a realistic strategy though. There's not a lot of guys like that out there. Almost none in college ball. Even in the NBA a lot of the guys who are considered elite defenders are more or less just goons like Dort. If you want to play defense aggressively you have to make it a point of emphasis to coach the team to be play defense aggressively. Hiring guys with primarily professional coaching backgrounds is never going to accomplish that unless you get really lucky and fall arse backwards into a young Thibs.
