he interesting thing is that in order to go nickel, they take out their NT and bring in a corner
When they convert from the 5-2 base it becomes a 2-5-4 formation. It originally was designed to stop the spread offenses especially with multiple WRs. This allows them to play very simple in their base and nickel packages. The real challenge is our Fr RT will have to contain that rushing DE all game. Their DC is also notorious for running a 1-5-5 that disguises what they are doing until the last minute. It allows them to quickly go from their base to their nickel packages.
The main concern for USC though will be depth and that is something I think they lack for this formation. They may well look good early in the game but I think the 2nd half we pull away.

Thanks for jumpng into the Xs and Os discussion. I love this kind of stuff.
However, I can't in good conscience call it a 2-5-4. Sure, there are only 2 hands on the ground, but you have, on every play, 2 DEs rushing the edge and 4 bodies on the line of scrimmage. You do not have 5 linebackers on the field. There are 2 Tackles, 2 Ends, 2 LBs, 3 Corners, and 2 Safeties - all lined up in what amounts to a 4-2-5. For me, the fact that their DEs don't have their hands on the ground is irrelevant given that they NEVER drop back in pass coverage. IMO, it's a 4-2-5 that can become 4-3-4 if the Safety lines up in the box.

They have a lot more depth in the secondary than the Dline or Lb core.

"Pretty good source says Blake Barnett will start Saturday. Kiffin's call.
Curiosity question and QB and WR options. If Robert Foster (projected as a starter) is number 8 and Blake Barnett is also number 8 does anyone else see a small issue in so far as who is allowed to play and when. Any "insider info" on who (BB8) would have to change his number and to what?
Maybe this has been discussed and I just missed it. Did Foster change his number to 1 or something?

I could be wrong but I think Robert Foster already changed his number from #8 to #1

This is what he did with Su'a Cravens and why Cravens was a freshman All-American. He loves to bring up that safety, but I am not sure he has the guns to be as aggressive as he wants on D.

That is why I said as a USC fan I would be worried. I am not sure their front 7 of theirs can sustain what we throw at them for 4 qtrs.

Yea, like I said a few days ago, my dude doesn't generally tell me stuff that's wrong. I'm pretty positive it's Barnett.
Gonna be interesting to see who trots out there. A Bama reporter on a local sports talk show here mentioned today that his sources were fairly confident that Bateman would start...

We've all been there

I call BS on Blake starting over Coop at this point. I would be shocked if Batemen does not start. NS is a creature of habit. I think both will play just like we have the last few years with an unproven first year QB. Now who finishes the game is another story.

Bateman is going in dry. He will be dangerous on the rollout run/pass option we put in for this year.

Have a hard time believing anyone with "sources." A week ago Hurts was the best thing since sliced bread and was getting hype to start.
Hell, the kid may redshirt this year

Bateman is Dobbs bad. Why start him? Why even play him at all?

I don't have a choice. Mrs Bill has me trying to catch up on Grey's Anatomy season 5 Thursday, says we need the quality time. So she will probably password secure all the other channels but Lifetime.
Somebody downvoted your arse for that.
I had a good laugh though Brosky just so you know somebody appreciates your comedic genius.

I wasn't the only one thinking that Cooper plays like Dobbs??

Put Bateman in the first few series then let Barnett play then when the game is out if reach put Hurts in so he can wreck whats left of USC

I don't know. Maybe it's because Saban thinks otherwise? And here lately he's done pretty well when picking the QB who gives us the best chance to win.
