Like I said before, it's not as if Prohm is only being considered because he is an alum.

I completely agree with everything you said. Prohm is being considered because he is a solid coach, who has done a solid job at ISU. But the only reason for him being the #1, TOP candidate is solely because of his ties to the University. If you remove his connections, he slides further down the list. I would go to Oats and/or Forbes before Prohm, and make those guys say no.

I wouldn't be that disappointed if Steve Prohm becomes our guy. But I would be disappointed if we didn't pursue other options before settling in on that hire.

He just won the Big 12 tournament title.
That doesn't do anything for me.

This is exactly how I feel.

OK. The point wasn’t necessarily about Prohm’s resume (although it’s pretty good), it’s that he’s in a good situation - one he wouldn’t likely leave for a job like Alabama unless he had an Alabama connection.

Yeah, if Prohm wasn’t an Alabama grad then there’d be no reason to think he’d even contemplate coming. He just won the Big 12 tournament title. The Alabama connection just gives us hope that we might have a shot at him.

Brannen would be the better example of a reach hire for a guy with “Alabama ties.”

Not saying this isn’t true, but the reverse is as well. If Prohm wasn’t an Alabama grad, we wouldn’t be looking at him. The most impressive thing about him is the fact he won the Big 12 Tournament which comes down to beating K-State (who just lost to UC Irvine) and Kansas (who has the worst team they’ve had since I don’t know when). Is it impressive? Yes. But considering they lost 5 of their 6 games before the tournament and went 13-18 the season prior, there’s plenty of reasons to be hesitant.

Prohm may be a safer hire, but I’d rather roll the dice on a mid-major coach who’s turned around a team rather than a guy who took over a top 25 program and simply kept them as a NCAA Tournament program.

Would we ever really know about other pursuits?

I mean this can just continue to go around in circles. Part of the reason we wouldn’t be looking at him is because there’d be no reason to think he’d come here. Unlike the trendy new mid-major coach.

The Prohm arguments have already been spelled out pretty clearly. It’s fair to say his third year is a bit of a red flag, but I tend to be pretty impressed by the fourth year rebound.

Anyway, I’m not really committed to any of these arguments. I’m fine with Prohm but I’m also fine with Forbes. Forbes might actually be my first choice. I haven’t really paid much attention to the Buffalo guy yet.

Well, we unfortunately knew about the other pursuits before we hired Avery....

But that was Bill Battle and not Greg Bryne, so hopefully this one won't turn into a shitshow like that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to pitch a fit if Prohm gets the job, because I don’t think he’s a bad coach. I just don’t like hiring a coach based off of a stretch of 2 games. If he loses to K-State, he doesn’t even get a call.

I completely agree. I had a retired coach tell me this morning that he'd be amazed if Byrne didn't have at least 2 or 3 names of respected coaches that would be interested in the job locked in a desk drawer at his office. Good coaches and ADs always have alternative plans in place.

I really wish that we could get the Texas Tech coach. I just think he's destined for Austin

I'm not sure what this means, but they're hinting at Donovan.

For all those seeing Donovan and getting your hopes up, remember that Anthony Grant was his top assistant at Florida and that him and Grant are still close friends.

I'm not seeing your point.

I have to think there's about a 1% chance there's anything to that tweet, but I'd take Donovan in a heartbeat.
