Who was the better player overall as a freshman? I’m gonna go with Philon because of his defense and a better shooter. Who do yall think was better?

JD was raw as hell at Bama. Elite athleticism but was a liability on the court, he was so far behind. I hate to say it, but he really would've benefited from going to a prep school instead of staying home. I normally like to see kids stay, but he was Alabama 2A, which is just too small. His basketball IQ was terrible.

Philon has been playing solid competition his entire life. He also did a year of prep school, and greatly improved his 3 point shooting. He came in much more college ready. It's why he shot onto mock drafts early on. He came in ready to run a high major offense. Which is pretty damn rare as a freshman.

I'm glad to see JD doing well for the Celtics up on Maine. He had huge potential. But it was always going to be a multi year project to have him NBA ready. Luckily he got in with a good organization to develop him.

Not if we do well in the tournament. He's going to play a key part of any tournament run we have. A good tournament only helps someone's draft stock.

JD was 5 years away from being 5 years away. Teams figured him out pretty quickly and started pressing him and that was it.

JD had a burst of good play against Houston when they threw the trash cans.

Scored 20 in win @ #3 Gonzaga - meaningful points too. At that time it appeared his athletic talent was enough.

Because of height they were different players but were similar in having elite, almost transcendent, athleticism. Who knew that JD was more raw than GW or maybe it was because G requires much more refinement and judgement than F.

If you switch their supporting casts, it could switch people’s opinions.

Personally, I think Philon is incredible and the best PG Bamas had since Sexton. JD unfortunately had to play with less around him. Philon was the much better penetrator. For as athletic as JD was, he struggled to get past defenders.

And that's where experience hurt J D. Playing in such a small classification, he never had to develop skills to beat defenders off the dribble. He was just such a better athlete, he never learned or was taught basic skills and court awareness. Iron sharpens iron.

He’s been solid but really, over Sears and Lewis?

Sears is an incredible guard, but as a pure PG, he is not as formidable. Philon is a better distributor and when Philon gets deep into the lane he’s much craftier than Sears at finishing.

Lewis was fast and maybe more dynamic in the open floor, but Philon is more polished and a better defender.

Lewis on this current team would be awesome to watch though.

Philon has an innate basketball IQ, especially for a true freshman. He sees the court so well and knows what to do and where to go. That along with his talent makes him as complete of a true freshman pg as we've ever had.
