Steele is retiring per Chris Low

quote:

Veteran DC Kevin Steele, who just completed his third different stint at @AlabamaFTBL under Nick Saban, plans to retire from coaching, sources tell ESPN. Steele, who turns 66 in March, has spent 40 years in coaching, 12 as a DC, and was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2017.

Can’t say I’m surprised. It would be nice to keep the OC / DC combo for more than 1-2 years for consistency sake… but hopefully we find someone to replace him that will turn the defense into the savages they used to be…

And....that clears the way for TRob to take over as DC.

Better lock him up if that is who Saban wants before Freeze comes calling

It’s TRob or it will be a splash hire. We can’t let TRob go somewhere else and get someone that is unproven.

Hope this isn’t a precursor to some crap news coming tomorrow.

I’m going to stop wishing for things to happen. It seems the opposite happens lately. Wanted Rees to move along and instead Steele.

Former Texas A&M defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin could be a name to watch as Nick Saban looks for a new DC.

I agree. I bet that is why Freeze got Kelly from CU to come in as DC. This was already in the works and Saban giving the reins to Robinson.

Doesn’t he run a different defense than Saban?

His age (coupled with his familiarity with Saban) always made this seem like a temporary hire to me. I initially thought he was hired until everything with Pruitt got cleared up, but that’s gonna take much longer than expected. But he always seemed like a good placeholder, not permanent

Pruitt has too much baggage and why would Will leave his alma mater, and coaching with one of his friends for Alabama?
