We either dropped or missed 5 by my count. It’s coming. We will have a huge pick game soon.

Tennessee helped us a lot last night. Our defense absolutely can not be depended on. I don’t know what some of you are looking besides the final score. Alabama has a great QB and great receivers. That’s it. Nothing else. Will it be enough? I hope so. One more thing. The OP is correct. Number three is weak as water against the run. He is absolutely awful against the run.

That was the top offense in the country. Stop clutching your pearls, girls.

Wasn’t Tennessee the No 1 offense in the country before the game yesterday?

It’s a total team effort. Our D is capable of making enough stops to be relied on.

Did you not see the dropped passes? They fricked themselves. We can beat anyone, but our QB better not have an off night because I don’t trust this defense at all and we can’t run the ball.

Hard to complain about the defense. They've been holding teams welll below their season averages during this tough stretch. I dont really care how they are getting it done.

THIS. Here's part of what I posted on tRant in response to a Bama fan complaining about Tennessee outgaining Alabama last night (half their yards came in the 4th when they were down 17).

Vs FBS teams not named Alabama:

Tennessee is averaging 43.4 ppg. They scored 20 vs Bama
Georiga is averaging 37.4. They scored 21 vs Bama
Vandy is averaging 46.2. They scored 14 vs Bama
Missouri is averaging 37.6. They scored 24 vs Bama

I'm not particularly a fan of the "keep everything in front of you" strategy when you get a lead, but at some point you've got to admit what they're doing is working pretty danged well. If they can fix the maddening tendency to totally botch assignments and angles on a handful of running plays each game, it's going to work even better.

apparently i'm not the only one struggling to get used to this bend but dont break defense. i'm sure there are high school teams that can move the ball on this defense in between the 20's. it's just tough to watch. but at the same time it seems to be working, for the most part, thus far

Saban warped our perception about what good defense is.

We are good on defense but we are use to being ELITE on defense and shutting everything down

Agree but will add…

The days of holding good offenses to 2-3 scores are just about over, aside from them just having an awful night.

The games evolved over the last decade and stopping high profile QBs with good WRs is just about impossible.

Getting 3-4 stops on defense and controlling the time of possession on offense is the winning combo now.

Kirby/Schumann have gotten torched a few times this year (and last year) and I think they know a thing or two about defense.

I liked the fight at the end of the game - not giving up a cheap TD.

As of Friday, were ranked the #18 team in total defense (possibly higher now). We are ahead of UGA, UA and UF and one below Miami. It’s not always pretty, but it’s pretty effective. Pro tip, if you go into a game expecting to see some breakdowns, they are easier to deal with.

This.

IMHO, the biggest reason we will never ever see an elite defense from any team ever again is b/c QBs are so protected now. Everyone wants offense and high scoring. I've always preferred to watch defenses tee off on qbs and make them scared to drop back b/c they know they're about to be buried. Make their arse quit.

And yes, the targeting rul is a great and necessary rule, but not being able to hit the qb within a step or 2 is just ridiculous. And yes, I get the safety factor for qbs.

I miss the MTAQ defensive games.

With that said, this defense is fun to watch much like watching a roller coaster ride video. My emotions and blood pressure get way up with each play, I lean into curves, raise my hands and someti.es throw up or pass out.

Or like a box of chocolates, sometimes we get the really disgusting coconut chocolates, sometimes its the really good truffle, milk chocolate or caramel, and then sometimes its the amazing turtle bites like that pick 6 last night.

Shutting down teams is a thing of the past with the spread and how refs call games.

We need better ILBers if we're going to the Show. #0 ain't it and has never been. You can't have #10 and #0 starting at the same time along with #1.

We don't have the lineman to come out in that 3 down lineman defense he wants to run the one where Pierre is roaming. They aren't big or stout enough. That's really my only gripe.

Tim Keenan is strong enough and a dog. Issue is all the double teams. He holds them up which is nice but won’t get the stats.

We can’t get to the QB unless we are blitzing a DB it seems.

Tbf ut held pretty badly the second half or we'd have had 10 sacks

defense held what had been the #1 scoring offense to 20 points, less than half their average. You guys need to let go of the idea that the days of Saban defenses completely shutting down good teams, that time doesnt exist any more, and its really tedious. The past 4 weeks the defense has been consistently been making the game breaking plays. Forcing red zone turnovers against vandy, stopping georgia on 4th down, pick 6 against tennesee, picking off the missou guy, etc etc. This is what football is now, parity is here and the teams that win are going to be the ones that make the big plays when they are needed. since FSU our D has been doing that and they should get some credit

We need to make fixing the DL an absolute emergency priority this recruiting season. Hit the portal for DL’s that can play with an blank check in hand. And kick Freddie Roach to the curb.
