Is under center football done forever?

Just a few years ago, it seemed insane when teams went shotgun on 4th and short. Now it seems like under center football is a thing of the past.
I realize that passing is significantly easier from the gun...but it seems like you can be much more creative with your run game under center with misdirection, toss, FB runs...and namely dives which are eliminated in shotgun.
Will football ever see prominent under center offenses again(other that service academies) or is that basically the wishbone

Michigan used it last year. It was also weird to see them huddle. A lot has changed since around 2011.

In the youth league I coach I had the only team that got under center at all. Game winning play on the goal line in the championship was from under center too.
Safe to say it’s almost gone across the board

Thats awesome. If I was a coach id go under center just because nobody else did it

Should be mandatory in hs and lower. I wish player development took precedence over winning games. We have schools that still run the wishbone for crying out loud.

You know in his autobiography … which should be required reading for Bama fans … Coach Bryant said the Wishbone was the best passing offense he’d ever seen. He said the key is you’ve got to execute it in a way where the defense has to use five people against the fullback, and if you do that you are guaranteed single coverage every time. Still valid 51 years after the book’s release?

No way, These things come and go. I doubt we see much of it under DeBoer, (even though I think I saw it against Auburn 1 or 2 times) but every single NFL team uses it, and so do a lot of college programs.
Once we get a Qb who is a serious play action threat, it will come back.
But there is no way Milroe had the footwork or the awareness to turn his back to a defense and then read it after the play has developed.
Play action from under center is hard and we especially didn't have the personal for that this year. So, no point in tipping off opposing defense to our run.

It was before my time but talking to the old timers, Bama was not the first or only team to run the wishbone, but they were the best passing team out of the wishbone

I rail against the stupidity of snapping the ball 6 yards back when you need 1 yard. It’s just beyond reason. You allow the defense to read and react before you even get back to the line of scrimmage. It’s not hard. A QB should be able to get under center a few times a game. It’s part of playing the position

Basically the RPO. Tough to stop with a smart QB. Look at Vandy
