re: How much do we expect the defense to improve...

I think there are obvious problems that need to be addressed, but if you look at the actual stats and when they occurred the picture isn't so bad.
I put it in the game thread when all the yards came. The 1st half wasn't as bad as people think.

The bye week comes at a great time. Our team is banged up and the team needs some time to self scout.

The muffed punt was weird and just an unlucky bounce that allowed them to hang around longer than they should've.

We are the best at everything, offense defense and getting g every recruit we want. That’s what this board wants to hear all the time

Never change Bama fans.
This is just the extension of them blaming Golding for us losing the Natty. It could turn out Pruitt was shadow DCing from UT for us the past 5 games and it'd be just as bad. A whole lot of stupid and very little sense.

While I agree some do go overboard sometimes it is possible to offer a critique of play, players and coaches and not be a knock on Bama. Just pointing out deficiencies and things we need to work on.

But please, don't let that get in the way of the chicken littles panicking.
We gave up 476 yards today. Over 100 yards rushing to a QB who is no where near the level of the true dual threat QB's we'll face later. He absolutely destroyed us on the edge today. We gave up 25 first downs. 15 of which came on 1st and 2nd downs. I'm not saying the season is lost but I'm also not putting my head in the sand and chalking it up to "simple play calling". On that note. If they are indeed keeping it simple so the young guys can play fast and they're still giving up 476 yards, what is going to happen when we simplify it for the tougher matchups later in the year?
I wanted to add this is not a panic. Just stating that the defense needs to improve before we get to the meat of our schedule.

I agree, there is nothing wrong with discussion or critique, but with context. I am seeing a ton of discussion that is very intellectually dishonest in regards to yards and defensive intensity.

Instead of quoting stats puffed up by a blowout, go look at what the stats were before we went up 45-10.

Real elite defenses still don’t give up a lot of yards and points in garbage time to an offense like Ole Miss. It’s not crazy to say that this defense has to improve.

Ole Miss' offense today reminded me of Auburn's with Marshall several years ago. Plumlee can run the zone read extremely well. Their offense is very different from last year when they had those freak WRs. It's more run based.

Defense really struggled once we went up 45-10 and put a lot of reserve defensive lineman in

Is that so?
2016 gave up 25 first downs and 400 passing yards to Arkansas in a blowout win. Real offensive juggernaut those '16 razorbacks.
This is a useless argument when you consider that the players that normally would sub in during garbage time... you know, the really outstanding freshmen and upcoming sophomores... are starting for you. No matter how talented a team is, eventually you run out of high quality depth to trot out during a blowout.
Furthermore, this defense lost the ability to be elite when both starting ILB's went down along with losing multiple front seven and now secondary pieces. I'm not sure what you were expecting after that.

I'm still wondering why Barmore isn't in there more. He's disruptive. Also have to think that Kaho and Benton might need to play more going forward. Getting Ray back on the front later in the season would be such great news.

At this point you ride or die with the freshmen ILB's. Either they get good enough that you can win a natty or you are throwing up a white flag putting a worse player in. Kaho needs to make as a big a leap as the freshmen to be an upgrade.

Doing it in 95 degree heat every week doesn't help matters.

Kaho just isn't an SEC linebacker at this point. He has really struggled in limited playtime.
Chris Allen was good at rushing the passer, but struggled setting the edge against ole Miss today. He played quite a bit with 47 and 91. Those three were in for a lot of fourth quarter.
Also seems like when they stretched the play wide Harris and Mayden got caught looking inside.

Kaho is a great special teams player. That was obvious today. I just wish that he would make the leap forward as an actual position player. Same with Benton.

147 yards in the first half. 228 yards in the third quarter alone. At the end of the 3rd the score was 52-24. If you want to call that garbage time then that's fine but our starters were still in the game. Those 375 yards didn't come against backups. 22 of the 25 first downs also came in the first 3 quarters as well as 107 of the rushing yards that Plumlee gained.
You never answered my question tho. What is going to happen when we simplify it for the tougher matchups later in the year?

Yeah that wasn’t a good performance and they improved from it. I’m saying this defense has to improve from it too. Again why is that something crazy to say?

Except not everytime a team is up 5 TDs, the opposing racks up garbage yards and points. It’s very much a possibility to hold a team to little offensive production throughout the game. Then consider in this game, there were still starters on defense out there when Ole Miss got up to 24. I just don’t see how one can be very pleased with that defensive performance. They have a lot to correct. Again not a crazy statement.

So what? Does that mean the coaches go “oh well, no point in trying to improve this defense since they can’t be better”?
