The novel coronavirus is “out of control” in Alabama, warned a state health official this week.

quote:

Alabama has reported some 225,910 cases of COVID-19 to date, according to data from the state health department. The rolling daily average of new cases has increased over the past two weeks to 684, representing a 50% jump. Current estimates show that one in every 342 people in the state has tested positive for the virus in the past week alone.

“It’s out of control,” Dr. Donald Williamson, the president of the Alabama Hospital Association and former director of the state health agency, said during a news conference, according to a local news outlet. “Our ability to contain the virus has been lost.”

"We have everything necessary to have a disaster between now and the end of December," Williamson warned as Thanksgiving and the holiday season approach.

The election was a super spreader event. Just like Thanksgiving and Christmas will be.

Hopefully, football season can finish. Basketball season has no shot at having a full season.

So wearing a mask doesn't work after all.

Who knew?

Were you under the impression it was supposed to be 100% effective? It might help if everyone would actually wear one too, or even wear them appropriately.

I’ve said all along that it’s here and isn’t going anywhere. Gotta live with it and if folks want to get a vaccine then they can get it.

Pretty sure things will get shut down when the new president takes office, especially with the numbers skyrocketing.

You are by far the most negative and miserable person on this site. I don’t know how you get the nerve up to walk outside of your house. A plane might fall on you or a rabid coyote might bite you.

It's not effective at all.

It's asinine to believe a piece of fabric is going to keep you from getting it.

Well, that's not actually true. With 95% usage, masks decrease transmission by roughly 30%.

Far less than the maskers would have you believe, but far more than the anti-maskers claim.

And for the skyscreaming mask fanatics, this is from our very own Ted2010:

Yep. I wear a mask anytime I’m around other people. And I still got Covid. Got it from a freaking doctor who had on full PPE. Masks are bullshite

Actual study on the effectiveness of wearing a mask for the Coronavirus

quote:

“A total of 3030 participants were randomly assigned to the recommendation to wear masks, and 2994 were assigned to control; 4862 completed the study. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 occurred in 42 participants recommended masks (1.8%) and 53 control participants (2.1%).

The between-group difference was -0.3 percentage point.”

Did all participants in the study have the same exposures to the virus?

That is a 17% reduced transmission rate in a study that had no blinds and no serious controls.

What type of mask are you talking about here?

My specific point is these cloth masks everyone is wearing is absolutely ineffective.

The manufacturer even tells you on the packaging.

ETA: This is effective:

This, is not:

At some point people have to stop freaking out over "cases."

Tell me how many people under 70 with no other serious health issues are dying from Covid, then I'll decide the appropriate level of freakout.

I'd hate to see the reaction over something that had less than a 99.7% recovery rate.
