Hayes/NIL Question

Still trying to get my head around the portal and NIL.
Read the article on Hayes to UM. $500k NIL vs $337k at Bama. Article said the two finalists were UM and USCe.
So does it go something like this: the current school tells the player they are only going to pay so much, player enters portal, then it’s a bidding war. If offer is less than the current school, they have to decide what’s more important to them?
Always surprised at the amount of kids getting playing time at big schools that move around.
Thanks

THIS!!!
Also, do these guys have to pay back some if they leave before the bowl game?

He'll probably be fine in the Big Ten if he learns how to take contact and fall forward. He could just be a generic Big Ten plodder back.

Schools only have X amount of money to pay.. They basically have to budget their salaries every year. Some guys will take priority over others based on need.
Justice I think was in a spot where we had other options at similar talent levels that we could pay within our budget. He simply made a business decision to get more money elsewhere.
That is the current business model of the sport.
Assuming a guy enters the transfer portal and returns he either got what he was asking or deemed the other offers as not significant enough a change to make a move.
I don't blame any kid looking out for their best interest in the current system. Do I think it's sustainable, no. But It is what it is for now

This is NIL money that BAMA is glad to give to someone more valuable than a RB that avoided contact and seemed to not be able to get the hard yards needed to sustain drives.
Is he a 1000 yard rusher at Mich? Barring injury, yes.
Is he going to be the difference between Mich going 7-5 and 11-1? No.
If dude is willing to leave for a little over $100k, then "Thanks for your service. Godspeed in all your future endeavors."

it is like the NFL model. QB, LT, edge rusher, CB, WR. are the spots that take the most money.
RBs, due to the availability take the least, you can put a S in that category to.
For us DTs are a must, due to the 3-4 years of not producing good ones

Where are these alleged NIL amounts coming from? That's another ? that needs to be addressed.
As I have said over and over, this flagrant bidding war stuff is gonna be the ruination of collegiate athletics, if it isn't already. (I contend it is.) It is not against the law to express this belief. Everyone involved is of a mercenary mindset, and I care nothing for this model. Might as well watch a better product on Sundays. At least there are "guardrails" there to keep the playing field somewhat level.

There was a play in the Tennessee game where the blocks set up perfectly and the defensive back took a bad angle. Any Saban running back from Glen Coffee through Najee Harris scores a 60 yard TD on that play. For Haynes it was about a seven yard gain. Later, there was a drive where Bama started pinned deep and drove it near midfield with a bunch of Miller runs. Haynes then came in and killed the drive with his dancing, contact avoidance, and poor vision. Those moments were emblematic of his career.
Him hitting the portal is a big win for Bama.

The games on Christmas day were SUPER entertaining.

Exactly. Way, way too many times Bama desperately needed 1-2 yds for a 1st down, Haynes gets the carry and there’s a defender at the line to make. Instead of just ducking his shoulder and plowing into the defender and picking up the 1st, he would dance or try to run wide and either get tackled for a loss or no gain.
Other than that one run vs Mizzou, he never ran with authority. Very timid.

This was my assumption. Any idea how these deals are structured? Is it per year, all up front, or does it vary like the NFL?

Even calling these NIL deals is dishonest. The idea was that a player could get paid to sign autographs or endorse a product for money. This isn’t NIL, it’s just people getting paid to play. They are not the same.

Gotta tip your cap to those Aggie boosters. Seems they were ahead of the curve on this and knew there was nothing that could be done to stop it.
