Good for him.

He still had a brain fart and gave them a TD that breathed new life into Arkansas.

It really is amazing that Saban has kept Golding around. I mean, he told Nussmeier to take a hike after a record breaking offense in 2012 and a slightly worse but not terrible offense in 2013. These Golding defenses are on par with what Lupoi had and he was sent packing after one season.

I realize Nuss and Tosh weren't technically fired, but they may as well had been.

Hope you're not referring to the FG fake because that wasn't his responsibility.

Apparently they were all assigned a man and expected a fake because they saw the fake last week against LSU.

It was Hellams man and Hellams of course runs into the ref because he had no spacial awareness.

2, 3, 9,28, 8 and 10 all start for the defense.

So we’re tough against the run. That’s great but everyone knows that and just like Arkansas, they tried to run it down our throats for a quarter, got stuffed so they took to the air. And just like almost every other team we’ve played, they moved it at will, driving 75 yards multiple times. And that was with their AA WR banged up pretty bad. So if we didn’t have the nation’s leading sack monster in Will Anderson, how bad would our pass defense be?

A very telling statement when Saban said on his radio show that he had to admonish Golding at times because a signal could mean 15 different things. The players are confused therefore overthinking things, and playing slow and blowing assignments. That’s not a talent problem.

Have you considered the players just might have an IQ problem. At some point the players have to perform but lets keep blaming it on the staff for that is really the easy way out.

Oh , have you seen Nick Saban up in Pete's face on the sideline at any game this year?

My point is that there are ebbs and flows to games. Defense kept them out of the end zone their first three possessions. If Bama capitalizes on the other two possessions instead of kicking a FG and Arkansas is down 21-0 three possessions in it can drastically effect the other team and our defenses performance. The defense recovered a fumble inside the 20!and Bama couldn’t do anything with it.

Josey, despite almost 4 seasons of incompetence from the DC chair, I have yet to see Saban get in Golding’s face. I’ve heard it said that Saban has taken over the play calling duties briefly at times. I wonder if Nick is loathe to admit a mistake compounded by keeping the mistake around too long.

Nah, I think Golding is very smart on the whiteboard, and Saban thought he'd improve on the actual coaching of players with time, and he wanted some stability at DC.

I suspect Golding might "find another job" after this season.

Our defense was good last year. The D had two bad games; Ole Miss (Kiffin owned Golding in that game) and Florida (matchup problems as we had no one who could cover Pitts & Toney and Mullen took advantage). Our D was great in the play-offs, especially against OSU (held them about 150 yards less than their previous low that season and 17 points below their average)...

Saban gave Golden an arse chewing on the sideline in last year's Ole Miss game...he also yelled at him during the Florida game last year but not as bad...

Golding at times because a signal could mean 15 different things.

Well, then we need to change the damn signals!!! Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!!
Years ago when I was coaching HS, our HC/OC wanted to go tempo/no huddle on wristbands. I coached QBs, so I sat down with the QBs and we talked out our formations/plays and we came up with signals that they could recall quickly and easily.
I don’t understand why we can’t do something similar and limit some of the things to cut out the brain farts in the secondary.

But

Defensive coordinator Pete Golding saw a bump in pay from $1.225 million to $1.5 million, and that salary will increase over the course of his contract (through 2024) to $1.7 million in its final year. Last season, the Crimson Tide’s defense ranked first in the SEC in scoring defense (19.4 points per game) and third in rushing defense, passing defense and total defense.

Golding got a pretty handsome raise for a guy who has been fired at least 3,000 times by the RBR commentariat alone. O’Brien making $1.4 million less than Sark effectively paid for Golding’s raise as well as Nate Oats’.

Obviously this all on the players, Bryce heck even the fans. Everyone but our defensive coordinator.

In fact he deserves a raise

Saban deserves a lot of criticism as well.

Saban has always shown a willingness to evolve with the game and that is why he is the GOAT but I wonder if he is a little blind when it comes to his defensive philosophy like some coaches (i.e Les Miles) won't change their offense to keep up with the times. Can someone with more football knowledge respond to this possibility?

There will come a time where he doesn't have it anymore. I hope he recognizes it on his own when that happens.

With Golding, maybe he values some continuity above all else? Maybe he accepts the game has changed?

It's painful watching our guys look lost and giving up a bunch of yards after so many years of domination. Even when we weren't so good (pre Saban, post Stallings) we still usually fielded good defenses. Maybe it's too complex and needs to be simplified. I don't know.

I'm wondering if this is just the classic post-championship funk, where players aren't playing with the same edge. We've seen it before.

I'm NOT laying this at the players feet. Because ultimately the coaches are 100% responsible for outcomes. They recruited and coached the players.

Saban has never been one to just fire incompetent staff.

He gets them jobs, elsewhere, so they can leave with some kind of pride or dignity, I guess.

Saban tried to pawn him off, last offseason. Pete's name was rumored and floated for at least 1 or 2 jobs that were open.

But, nobody wanted him.

And for good reason. He sucks donkey balls.

I've noticed this and thought about it.

Seeing that Pete Golding is legitimately and severely mentally-retarded (think IQ of a potato), I think Saban just avoids him because if he yelled at a mentally-retarded person in public and on live television, Mrs. Terry would be after him.

She's done so for less.

I'm pretty sure during coaching staff meetings, Saban just gives him a coloring book, some safety glasses, and a helmet and sits him down at a table somewhere out of the way.

So your story is Pete couldn't get another gig so Nick Saban (coming off another NC) didn't have the heart to fire Pete so he gave him a great raise instead and extended his contract?

Is that your story?
