re: Tommy Rees in retrospect

It’s hard to judge Rees because he was put in a similar situation as Daboll, where the playcalling was limited by deficiencies in the quarterback. We didn’t have the benefit of pre-snap reads or Milroe shifting the line after picking up a blitz. We also abandoned the middle of the field passing game after the disaster that was Texas.
Only Sane post in the thread. - so it’s mostly down voted!!! LOL!!! Priceless!!

I don’t care either way because I’m not one of the people who does this, but most of the people who want to reign in NiL and cap what the players can make would throw an absolute hissy fit if that was suggested in any other business
Uh……. Isn’t that how it’s done in nearly every Pro sports league?

Saw that quote recently from him and had to kind of laugh. I know that's the attitude Texas players and fans had when it came to the Big 12 but Bubba, you aint in the Big 12 no more. Yes, Texas is a good program and they're going to win a lot of games but unlike in the Big 12, he's going to find much tougher sledding in the SEC with Bama, UGA and maybe even LSU better than you and most of the other teams (minus Vandy) being capable of beating your a$$ if you don't play well. I knew they were arrogant but I bet a lot of SEC fans didn't realize just how off the charts their arrogance is. Gonna be funny seeing them lose some game in the years to come that they shouldn't have lost. Yes, Quinn. Texas is a big game but THE BIGGEST? Nah.
Bingo! Most Bama fans DO NOT REALIZE what a horrible CANCER Tex-sux is and always has been.
We love Sark so we ASSUME TU must be ok since Sark is there. They are not.
Tex’s Megalomania has Destroyed TWO good conferences. And looking at their schedule, it’s obvious to me that some kind of shady “deal” has been made to get them into the SEC.
Mark my words, this is a huge mistake, and in due time, we will all come to regret letting them in the conference..

Bingo!
AND - It’s a completely reasonable opinion for anyone who isn’t a homer.
As for Saban having recruited them: yea, and he also knows who LEFT.
And, most of y'all are probably too young to remember pat dye’s infamous “they ain’t man enough” comment!!! ;-)

It is very tacky, but I’d rather do that then put ads on jerseys, our field, etc.
I think it’s stupid as hell but I also don’t have the “SEC Pride” thing. It’s us and frick these others schools so if they want to name it the Alabama and 15 frickboys conference” then I’m down.
BINGO. Every Single Other school/program/fanbase in the SuC HATES US. All 18 or 35 or whatever it is now.
Every SuC member CHEERED in 1995 and again in 2002 when we were screwed over by the NZAA. And they all Laughed when we languished from 2000-07. So I've long since stopped caring about ANY of them.
IF they want to call it the Yellawood Conference - Well, just don't be surprised when it happens....

I don’t believe Coach Bryant should be mentioned with the other two at all. His last 4 years were a national championship, a 10-2 top 10 team, Sec Co-champ top 10 team, and then his last team actually fell of to 8-4. He then knew it was time to hang it up.
In fairness - Saban's last 4 teams were -
- NC in 2020
- One blown Knee from a NC in 2021. (or 2 blown knees from ROUTING UGhey in the NC game)
- A "Crap" season when we "Only" went 11-2 (thanks to SEC officiating as much as our teams failings).
- And 2023 where we were LITERALLY only about Two First downs OR one more Mich Punt, from running out the clock to beat Mich, and almost certainly would have romped on Washington.
It was HARDLY a "JoePa" or Diddy Bowden situation!!!

Those Corporate Luxury Suites and "Zones" etc, are PACKED out every game day with Millionaires (and probably even a few Billionaires).
I'm just not interested in putting up my hard earned money to bribe some 17 year old punk who might not even stay in Tuscaloosa for 10 months.

So is Austin, TX. Didn't seem to bother the SEC or the TV networks that drive these expansions.

Beyond that I don't think the TV market argument is really relevant, it is about the brand of the school.
The SAD TRUTH is that the TV market is ALL that is relevant.
All that other stuff - sad to say - does not mean ANYTHING to the people driving these decisions now.

re: Would you be OK with having the Iron Bowl early in the season?
Posted by TomFromBama on 6/24/24 at 4:18 pm
I've been saying this for DECADES. (So that proves how much "Pull" I have!!! )
And to be clear - there hasn't BEEN an "Iron Bowl" since 1988.
BUT - the reason it SHOULD be moved is that the game is CLEARLY more important to the Booger-Eaters. Their WHOLE WORLD turns on beating "Big Brother." - but our guys really ONLY Care about getting into the P_ayoffs and making a title run - JUST being HONEST about it.
Think about all the aubarn games since... well, since 1989. HOW Many Times have they played OVER Their heads and our guys played "fair" or "Tight" or "Below average"??? Sadly, the answer is - way more often than not..
ALSO, by playing them late we give THEM way more attention than they deserve. it makes the game twice as "Relevant" as it should be, because they OFTEN have a short to SPOIL our season.
MANY other programs play their main "Rival" early, or at least by Mid-Season - and it makes ALL the sense in the world. AND it prevents a Crap Boog team from ruining our season on some FLUKE! Because even an early upset does NOT necessarily Kill us - esp. with the 12/24/36 or whatever it is P_ayoff.
Roll Tide!

Eh, I haven’t been there in a while, but in the 80s it was.
Long history of leftism, too! Back in the 60s the students engaged in full on terrorism, and they had at least one major bombing of a campus building.
re: Assuming that Jalen is QB1 going into this season, how do you help him?

Jalrn Milroe is a known quantity. Unless Deboer or someone else on the staff is as good with quarterbacks as Lane Kiffin, then there is no helping him. Ty Simpson hanging around is an extraordinary off season win.
So I’ve said for 28-30? Months now that Milroe seems to be a fabulous human being and a great teammate.
I am STILL pulling for him to become a great QB. And I have no idea if he’s at his ceiling or not.
Jalen Hurts SURE found an extra “gear” by December 2018!!! Maybe Milroe will too?
But - Much as I love and respect Coach Saban, one of his (very Few) weaknesses was his “snake-charm” obsession with “dual threat” QBs - NONE of which ever won a NC for him. NONE.
And, let’s be honest - Coach also occasionally let the “inmates run the asylum”, esp. with picking QBs based on popularity with the team.
Laugh all you want, and yes, i DID see the USF game. But “IMO” IF we had gone FULL ON with Simpson starting in Feb. 2023 (the way we did with Milroe) and never wavered (the way we did with Barnett in 2016 and Milroe in 2023), Coach likely goes out with a 7th ring.
Flame away - but let’s also be honest and admit that Milroe peaked against LSux and didn’t play as good or as complete a game after that.

I’ve got a better idea. Don’t pay them anything but a chance to earn a higher education. Until the adults of this country put these children in their place, all these entitled spoiled rotten children will never value education, institutions of higher learning or any type of respect for their self or others. Call me what you will, but I’d rather see the university recruit the type of student athlete that’s a student first and an athlete second. Because this shite we’re seeing now is the downfall of the universities and college athletics
So - I NEVER thought I’d say this; and it will never happen; but this “sport” has become such a sheet-show now; I’d actually support Alabama dropping NIL football and replacing it with Div-III or even NAIA, and just make it an “amateur” sport again.
And I’m NOT so naive to think it would ever happen!!!! - no way our greedy Alma-mater would walk away from perhaps $50-100 mill a year.
But Coach Saban was right - CFB as we’ve known it is OVER and it’s never coming back. And honestly, ever since Coach announced his retirement, AND publicly stated WHY he retired, I’ve become almost ambivalent; and for much the same reasons that I lost interest in all the pro-sports decades ago. :-(

I have a lot of fond memories of good times spent in Mad-town many years ago when I was a young man. I’d dearly love to go and have another Gyro at the Parthenon on State Street! AND Camp Randall has a reputation as one of the best venues in the B1G-Ego conference.
But health will prevent it. So I’ll have to live it vicariously!
Madison’s a FUN town, but slightly to the left of Berkeley, Austin, or Charlottsvile. :-(

Virginia over Va Tech. We want THE state school, not the Auburns in the ACC. I guarantee you the top priorities are UNC and Virginia. Clemson and FSU after that just to make sure Florida and South Carolina have their Auburns to put up with.
No offense, but if have learned ANYTHING from the SEC additions of the past 30+ years, it’s that the opinions of the Alabama fans mean NOTHING!
All this crud is 100% driven by money. And I can assure you that if the accountants and economists said to bring in FAU and Texas State, that sheet would happen tomorrow.
Mind you! I have No Problem at all with anyone talking about what we want!!! That’s great. Just realize that things WE care about, like “Flagship” status, or athletic reputation, or “culture” mean Nothing to the people who make these decisions.

In the NFL, wouldn’t most of these malcontents have been traded (fired?)

If the TV market is still what you are after you have to target Duke, UNC and the biggest prize ND. I doubt they would all be interested. Please no Virginia teams.
ALL it’s EVER been about is market share. Period.
The only reason the SEC would take a team in a market where the conference already has a presence would be defensive - to keep the B1G-Ego out of the market.
For example; the ONLY reason the SEC might take GaTech would be to keep the B1G out of the lucrative ATL TV market.

College athletics has just about lost me. I mean, I know this will make the team I cheer for better, but it's just stupid. Realistically how far are we from guys leaving in the middle of the season and joining another team immediately? Sounds crazy but it feels like we're closer to that than we are to the old "transfer and sit" rules.
Agree 100%.
All this makes Coach Saban’s retirement seem so ….. well, ….. understandable.
Frankly, I suspect we are only a few MONTHS from seeing athletes (and not just a few) play the first 3-4 games at one school, and surface at a second program for the last few regular season games and the P_ayoffs.
The whole thing is just off the rails. :-(
