Remember Nussmeier getting a lot of grief early in the season for his curious, pass-happy play calling?

I don't know how many times I yelled at the screen: RUN THE DAMN BALL.

Well, he seemed to grow into the role as the season progressed. And he probably reached his peak when it most mattered--the SECCG. He finally got it--if you can run it, and they can't stop it, then, well, maybe you should run it.

The BCSNCG was the icing on the cake.

Can you imagine the grief he would have taken, having been the only significant "new guy?" Filling in for McElwain who had two titles under his belt, and arguably called a genius game in 2011 against LSU? Think he was feeling the pressure as the new kid on the block?

Hats off Nuss. Welcome to Alabama.

He cost us the A&M game, but damn I've never seen our offense so dominant as it was against Notre Dame.

All aboard the Nuss Bus

If the playcalling from the final 6 quarters of last season carries over to next season, I will be very happy with Nuss.

I've been a Nuss fan since the hire. Sure there was some growing pains but that was expected. I like his aggressiveness Alabama needs that.

Hard not to be happy with 3,000+ yards rushing and 3,000+ yards passing. Of course he inherited a superb offensive line and a very good returning QB. I was very pleased on the whole. There were a couple hiccups playcalling but that's to be expected in his first year. Looking forward to his 2nd year.

Playcalling is the Battle of Wits Iocaine Poison scene from The Princess Bride. The only way to ensure success is to possess the talent to have both options certain death for your opponent.

I was watching an episode of Doug recently and the episode had a title that was sorta fitting in relation to the game Monday. At the expense of offending an Irishmen on the board, the episode was named "Doug clobbers Patti".

I never questioned his hire. Except for the A&M game, I never questioned his play calling. However, the other big part of his job is developing the quarterback talent and I'm not 100% sold on the job he is doing there. We'd have been in a world of hurt if AJ had been injured but the lack of depth is not totally his fault. Let's just say I hope to see more development this year.

Edit to add: And considering the losses of DeAndrew White, Kenny Bell and Jalston Fowler to injuries, the job the offense did was truly remarkable.

I'm on board. Yes, he had to be reeled in late in the season and he has a propensity for getting too cute offensively, but all in all I love what we did on offense this year.

As far as QB development Alec Morris is the only QB he has had to develop.

And, Phillip Ely. Of course, both are freshmen.

I've always been on the Nuss Bus. He had a bad day against A&M, but it's nothing compared to the grief, frustration I often felt watching McElwain's fricking offense.

Very "meh" about Nuss. Another typical OC that is constantly auditioning for another job by trying to impress everyone with their brilliance. I think he was one of those guys that was almost embarrassed to run a pedestrian ground-oriented attack. He almost cost us the LSU game. He absolutely choked us the A&M game.

If you think he had some sort of epiphany about running the ball at halftime of the SECCG, you're mistaken. Go back and watch Saban's remarks to the sideline reporteron the way to the locker room. That was not a subtle message. Would not be surprised if Nick told him, "Run the damn ball or take the Major Applewhite shuttle out of town."

Nussmeier is to blame for the A&M loss and not Saban's, Smart's wholly unprepared defense?

There was blame to go around. 1st and goal from the 6 with the best OL in the nation and we come out shotgun? Inexcusable.

Wouldn't have been in that situation of the D hadn't allowed 29 points. The game wasn't lost on a couple of play calls. No one here has ever been a coordinator.

You're right about Nussmeier's playcalling but keep in mind that it was just his first year of calling plays. He comes from a QB background so it's not surprising that he prefers a pass-happy offense. However, he's still a great OC and huge improvement over McElwain. It's ridiculous how much more creative he is with the passing game than McElwain ever was. Also, check out the improvement in TD% inside the red zone. It jumped from 91st to 9th this year. You're complaining about the playcalling in the LSU and Texas A&M games. Well, if McElwain was still the OC, Bama would have lost the LSU game by not converting red zone opportunities into TDs. They also would have been blown out by Texas A&M because it's easy to shut down McElwain's simplistic passing attack. Remember when we got down by 3 TDs to Utah and South Carolina and got blown out in both of those games because we couldn't come back against those teams by moving the ball through the air. The same thing would have happened against Texas A&M and we never would have even had the opportunity to score the game-winning TD in the waning moments of that game. All in all, Nussmeier's an above average OC.

I had a chance to meet Nussmeier informally last summer and he is a good guy. He knows about the expectations around here and I'm glad he was able to get us back to the smash mouth running team we've always been. With the WR's we have coming in he has to be licking his chops at what kind of passing threat he can have while also having the ground threat. In the next 3 seasons we will have a 3,000 passing yard QB.

The D wasn't getting any help in that first quarter. A&M's offense is obviously pretty damn good so our D could only do so much. The best way to counter Johnny Football was to hold onto the ball and wear down A&M's defense. Our gameplan never called for that even though we were having success running the ball.

I still think that if we had come out running in the third quarter, then we win by at least a TD.
