Good Afternoon Horns247!!

— Yahoo's Pete Thamel tweeted that Tennessee is planning to part ways with head football coach Jeremy Pruitt on Monday, a development that could have implications for Steve Sarkisian's defensive coordinator search, sources told Horns247.

Sources have indicated to Horns247 that Sarkisian was focused on Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding to take over the same position at Texas but that Alabama coach Nick Saban was objecting to that unless Saban had a suitable defensive coordinator replacement.

Sources close to the situation have told Horns247 Saban thinks Pruitt was the best defensive coordinator Saban has had at Alabama, and those sources said Saban has known for weeks that Pruitt might be let go at Tennessee.

So the biggest question is if Tennessee lets go of Pruitt for cause - meaning school officials have found something they think Pruitt did that might've violated his being eligible for a contract buyout - could Pruitt be facing some kind of "show-cause" penalty from the NCAA (even though it would likely take months or even a year before that's ruled on by the NCAA)?

A show-cause penalty means any NCAA penalties imposed on a coach found to have committed major rules violations would stay in effect against the coach for a specified period of time and could be transferred to any other NCAA-member school that tries to hire the coach while the sanctions are still in effect. Both the school and coach are required to send letters to the NCAA agreeing to abide by the restrictions imposed.

Obviously, if Saban has interest in hiring Pruitt as his defensive coordinator, Golding would become available for Sarkisian as defensive coordinator.

Another name to keep an eye on as a hot defensive coordinator candidate at any top program is current Tennessee defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley, a former defensive backs coach at Alabama (2016-17) and the Oakland Raiders (2018) who is also considered an elite recuiter.

Stay tuned.

I'm thinking UT based their for-cause termination on minor violations that would not put UT at risk of getting hit with an NCAA investigation and any serious punishment. So, I doubt Pruitt was fired for violations that could result in a show cause.

ETA: Looks like I could be wrong about that, per this pretty thorough, detailed article:

#Tennessee has fired Jeremy Pruitt. The #Vols embark on yet another coaching search… Who will #UT want? Who will want UT? Jamey Chadwell? Bill O’Brien?? Here’s how I see the coaching search shaping up.

Get the fvck out of here Bruce

How freaking funny would it be if the Vols got themselves in big trouble with the NCAA in an effort just to get out of paying Pruitt. Surely this will be dragged out and Pruitt will fight to get the buyout and clear his name.

I doubt there'll be any lawsuit or NCAA show cause involving Pruitt. I think UT's LB coach Niedermeyer committed the Level-I violations and gets a show cause. Since UT paid for the investigation and let the NCAA zoom into key interviews of Pruitt and Niedermeyer, UT will get lighter punishment. Pruitt will likely be glad to come back home to a long-term $2M-ish/year contract as Bama's DC. Texas can pay UA $1.8M for Pete's buyout, maybe Banks & Sark buyouts too. We'll see.

ETA: It appears I could be wrong about Pruitt and UT avoiding serious NCAA punishment, per this pretty thorough, detailed article:

BOL Names to Watch for Position Coaches

Offensive Line
- Doug Marrone (ex Jags HC)
- Jeff Stoutland (Eagles OL Coach)
- Jody Wright (NYG Def Assistant)

Running Backs
- Danny Barrett (Texas RB Coach)
- Joe Pannunzio (Eagles Dir Team Development)
- Lance Taylor (Notre Dame RB Coach)
- Jody Wright (again)

Tight Ends/Speical Teams
- Kevin Sumlin (ex Arizona HC)
- Bobby Williams (FVCK THIS) (Oregon TE/ST Coach)
- Joe Pannunzio
- Jody Wright

So I guess BOL seems to think Jody Wright and Pannunzio are good bets to come back

I wonder how well received Sumlin would be as a recruiter in Texas at this point. Pannunzio would kill it in South Florida like he always has though.

I know someone very close to Jody and he didn’t like some of the working hours and enjoyed working in a”better environment “ that was UAB and Cleveland at the time . Now he may need a job and want to be closer to home but TIFWIW

The takeaway here is that Jody Wright is on staff at BOL.

Yea - I think Watts is as good as it gets with recruiting stuff, but I don't get the idea that he or the BOL crew have much in terms in connections with coaches or people in the building.

Almost all their "hot boards" are basically the same people that fans have connected dots on. They never seen to have much real info on these.

I don't know about that, but I do know that their in state recruiting was pretty bad his last couple of classes after it had been really good early on.

Nope. There was no offset language in his contract, which was a big reason they were so hell bent on finding a reason to fire him for cause.

It is amazing how terrible some athletic departments are at coaching contracts.
