Jimmy Stein says it was 1st to commit between he and Caldwell, Caldwell privately committed, then took a trip to Maryland, where they made him offer based on their need for him, and he committed to them.

Well yeah, it was a stupid optimistic comparison for a reason. I'd be happy if he's a valuable asset to the team in any capacity. Short but not small, a much bigger catch radius than you'd expect, and plays with his hair on fire is how I'd describe Simmons though. He also plays two way football and unless you're a Deion tier cover corner you can't be worth a frick on defense if you don't like to hit people.

I saw a video of his commitment earlier. Not a tall guy but very solidly built. He's clearly not one of those guys who have to redshirt to put on 20 lbs.

We have millionaires bidding against billionaires in some cases.
I'm not saying were a small market baseball team or something, but we aren't in the Dodgers or Yankees tier and without a salary cap I dont see how that changes.
Like I dont think we would've brought Ty Simpson back if he opted to stay in school and had an $8M offer to Miami and wanted a full dollar match.
It seems clear that Courtney Morgan and KD are playing moneyball so while I think we can compete, the era of annual top 5 classes is probably over particularly when we have a couple surprise guys opt to come back for an extra year and have to throw in big NIL money to retain them.
Its great to have Keon Sabb for instance because hes a right now starter, etc, but we probably had to let a couple 4* kids walk to make it happen.
Those are real life choices that will be made every year moving forward.

Yep. This staff believes in retaining over landing some top freshman who may not be able to contribute.
DeBoer wants guys he trust. Also keep in mind that Penix was a 3 star and his top two WRs were a 3 star and a low 4 star.

Someone above said a RS year. Guys and gals, those days are no longer there. 5 years to play. Period. I have not heard whether someone gets a 6th year is they get hurt in the early part of year 5 and only play in a few games. TideSaint. Do you know?

Well priority 1 is having a roster that can win now.
But every player has a grade and if a B tier player wants A tier money *cough James Smith* then you have to think real long and hard before you bring that guy back.
Same goes for recruits. If you can sign Gayles (A) and Simmons (B) for less than Sales (A+) and you dont even need a day one starter from that group is it worth it to get in a bidding war when you already have three guys for next year:
-Morgan (A)
-Brooks (A)
-Meadows (B)
The days of stacking non-starting high NIL value players is very likely over. If you sign Sales for $4M he is going to have to be a day one impact starter or there will be holes elsewhere on the roster.

Regarding stacking 4 and 5 star players, I think there are still a few schools out there who can do and will continue to do that: OSU, Texas, A&M, Oregon and Texas Tech all appear to have semi unlimited funds with no end in sight. IMO, it’s only going to get worse.
There will be some former 4 and 5 star guys who aren’t playing that will hit the portal but I also think some guys who aren’t playing, as long they’re still collecting their 7 figure NIL money, they’ll be OK with sitting a year or two.
Frankly, I think unless there is some kind of cap, we’ll eventually have a few teams with rosters with $100 million in NIL (or more).

Oh I agree.
Texas just signed a guy who would’ve likely been a starter at RB for us from the portal as an RB2/situational back.
I should’ve clarified that it was probably not going to be the norm for us moving forward.
The position groups that continue to defy that are secondary and QB, but I think that’s the result of incredible talent identification rather than spending capacity.
CKD is like a fat girl on a dating app after getting implants and ozempic, signing all the QB prospects he could never pull at previous stops because they have A grades despite the fact that most teams can only hold one starter tier guy at a time.
How that plays out I have no idea but I’m confident we can get high level QB play as long as he’s here which we’ve really only had a half season of due to injuries, I just don’t know what that’s costing us as far as other position groups.

Stacking elite QB prospects makes complete sense to me. Playing portal roulette with the position is risky. Especially if you have a big need for one in an offseason where there are a lot more teams who share that need than quality players. I also don't think DeBoer runs the kind of offensive system that really lends itself to being picked up and mastered over the course of 6 months. It's better to have regular competitions between guys who have had time to learn and develop. NFL franchises will certainly appreciate it.

If it is not regulated and capped, there will be a number of college programs with a higher roster payroll bottom line than some NFL franchises in 10-15 years.
