If they were surprised he committed then why did they offer?! Is this a read-between-the-lines thing where nobody is saying “he just decided he was committed today without an offer” because that’s my best guess.

Probably just an informal offer contingent upon camping or putting on a bunch of weight or something. He heard "we'd like you to be part of our program" and ignored the next bit about "but we need to see you up close at one of our camps this summer".

That’s exactly how BOL described it. Alabama staff didn’t publicly deal with it and let the camp evaluation do the work. No harm, no foul.

Interesting new offer, WR out of Selma. Gaudy stats (2000+ yards receiving last season).
LINK

Not a huge kid but 2000 receiving yards is undeniable. My guess is Sales and Gayle #1 and #2 and if one or both go elsewhere, this kid would have a commitable offer?

That kid actually looks really good,
has good hands and locates the ball really well.

I think he's going to visit LSU instead. LSU just lost one of their guys they were counting on to Florida, so they've got their pocketbook open.

There was a poster on the SECrant who talked about his son's recruitment as a kicker. Not sure the details, but i think the kid bailed on his commitment at the last minute to take more money.

I get the impression LSU is spending NIL like drunken sailors since Lane got there. Not sure if this is true but I'd heard that the governor has siphoned off state money that was intended for rural hospitals into the LSU NIL collective.

Again, I don't know if that's true but given how historically sketchy some of the governors in Louisiana have been, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

No doubt the governor will use Medicaid funds to pay for players. Huey Long stopped Ringling Bros Circus at the border, requiring that all animals be dipped in vermin killer, so they would not interfere with LSU football ticket sales.
