I hate to say it but most (not all but most) of the guys we’ve gotten out of the portal are crumbs.

Jahmyr Gibbs - Tech
JAMO - OSU
Brailsford - UW
Cuevas - UW
Steen - Vandy
Overton - A&M
Burton - UGA
Domani - USC
Horton - Miami
Dewberry - A&M
Sabb - Michigan

Lot of starters and a couple legends mixed in there.

Outside of Gibbs none of them were thought to be top college players or they had issues at other schools.

Outside of what happened to us with Saban retiring it’s extremely unusual for AA level players to transfer.

The point is and remains as has been shown by that list for us and the success of LK at Ole Miss that transfer portal players can be found that are instant impact starter level players even if they haven’t proven it yet in a way that’s a recognizable to the average fan.

It’s why so many coaches wanted to do away with spring games: other teams were picking apart that tape to ID players to target who could be high immediate impact/upside guys at lower price points because they haven’t put their skills on film during games yet.

Without transfers the end of the Saban era post 2020 looks completely different for us because it was predicated on filling massive gaps with guys like Steen at LT, Gibbs at RB and JaMo as a gamebreaker at WR spreading because our assistants and analysts at that point weren’t holding their own as far as identifying and developing home grown talent and depth the way we had in previous periods.

If not for the portal guys we have currently on the roster we would not be in the playoffs this year.

Looks that way now. Long way to go. He has a 5 star brother that plays basketball. If the parents want them at the same school you aren’t doing much better than Alabama for top tier at both sports.

Alabama starting cornerback Zabien Brown also spoke to the media on Sunday and was asked specifically about the duo in his position group, Edmonds and Gibson, both of whom were 4-star prospects and top-70 players in the class.

“shite, they’re focused, they’re locked in,” Brown said. “I think they move around real well, especially for just getting here. I think they look real good out there.”

No thanks. It's going to cost A LOT to sign him and that money is better spent elsewhere on our roster.
